It really was a joke. Citadel was doomed to fail because the attacking Germans were outnumbered and the Soviets were aware of the impending attack, down to the minute of the assault. It was basically ramming Army Groups South and Center into a brick wall headfirst.

In fact, the Soviets fired the first shots of the battle, launching a barrage of the German lines at the exact hour the Germans were to step off, delaying the attack by a little over an hour and taking the German momentum before they even started. They also massed hundreds of tanks and thousands of artillery tubes in the months leading up to the battle in preparation, to say nothing of the anti-tank ditches, trench lines, and minefields laid in the same stretch of time. Sure, a bunch of Soviet planes were shot down; so what? German fighters like the FW-190 were superior on a tactical scale to Soviet Yaks and MiGs, but the Soviets were making more of them, and could afford to lose on ratios in excess of 4:1 if they had to, if not more. Besides, the air war has little bearing here, since the Germans lost air superiority over Kursk in about ten minutes. The battle was fought on the ground between men and tanks, where the Germans lacked the numbers advantage from the start. That is what matters here; numbers. Not quality, which is at best debatable; quantity. The Russians had an endless sea of manpower and armor, where the German pool could only dwindle.
