I'm deep in the Amazon rainforest, sleeping on an open platform with just a thin mosquito net between me and the jungle. I've been out in the jungle every day since I got here, carrying a heavy backpack and a lot of photo/camera gear. I sleep like a baby at night because of the physical exertion, but also thanks to the incredibly varied and immersive soundscape.
Around 4am the insect chorus and water dripping sounds start to slowly morph into something more lively. Distant howler monkeys can be heard, while a flock of macaws is making a racket nearby. Screaming piha calls remind me I'm in the Amazon, while Motmots utter their low frequency bubbling call. Later on, toucans and toucanets join in along with a myriad other species.
All this happens so gradually that I'm not even aware of the moment I drift from sleep into awareness. The sounds of the rainforest weave into my dreams and eventually wake me up. Before I get up and put on my wet, clammy clothes (no way to dry laundry in the jungle!), I sit still and take it all in. Luckily I have several microphone rigs out, recording all this and more.
Recorded in Madre de Dios region, Peru with Sound Devices 633 and Sennheiser DMS rig. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:
