Hey asmon! I just wanted to say, Kira had cancer 3rd or 4th stage. So it is miracle he still has the hair. Don't be mad at him :D. I lost grandmother and father to cancer. One of the main draws of new MMO's is joining the "starting experience". If everyone is boosting their characters from day 1, you're either doing the same, or you're left behind. No one wants to deal with that B.S. This is a non-starter to me. You don't sell boosts for a game that is just starting.

The monetization problem comes from gaming companies being TRADED PUBLICALLY. When a company trades publically its always about growth, increasing profits, and bowing down to investors. When you have a private company you can run it on a deficit, even, or on a profit and the only one who has the say is the owner! In a way, developers should not be blamed for monetization practices and requirements placed on them by corporate. Developers should be blamed in general for allowing those practices to go into creating games over the last 2 decades.

OSRS might be the only fair MMO out there at this point. Free to play game with optional membership fee and that's it. They don't event sell any cosmetics or expansions, just membership.

It makes it possible to play the game for free if you buy them and it makes black market gold not worth buying (you risk ban). By the way I said you can only buy membership and bond is a membership that can be traded between players, nothing more, nothing less.

Idea: Keep cool armour/weapon cosmetics within the game content and make the micro-transational cosmetics be something small like.. the ability to change your player portrait, or change the texture of your abilities (like a green frostbolt for example) I have million ideas with 0 ambition.

That's capitalism for you. And for those that argue it's not capitalism, I gotta ask then, what is it? Just like Asmons point about "you don't *have* to buy things from the cash shop", you also don't *have* to buy games that have cash shops. But that doesn't mean it doesn't affect every other game, slowly, and eventually destroy the entire industry. We've seen it for the last decade.

i have no problem with games selling cosmetics, simply put, the art for the game is done before the scripting is, it takes less time and once the artist is done they have down time where they're simply not doing anything. boost and other such are somewhat sketchy, if added sometime after the release of the game i have no issues with it, they're essentially a catch up mechanic at that point. would i rather they weren't in the game? Yes. Would i rather play a game that makes more money so has more employees to add new content? Yes. you only have to look at a lot of MMOs these days to see that theres an issue with the lack of content.

Hell as an avid guitar hero 3 player I remember buying 2-3 songs for a few quid back then. Ashes Of Creation is the closest thing of what you are describing. And it would take millions of dollars (you cant exactly make up a number which doesnt help funding at all) to make an mmorpg, imagine the cost of all the hired devs, their monthly paychecks, the years where you would make 0 consistent money in development stage etc.

That's why stakeholders and investors exist, they pay for the early stages where you don't make any money, which you give to them later when the game is successful. That happens with any new business, not only in gaming. I wasn't talking about making a mmorpg by $50 donations, but listen, if you have thousands of people donating $50, that creates momentum and attracts the attention of those holding the $. The years it would take to create it are the same ones he will complain about getting screwed by Blizzard.

@@TantrumT I honestly with all my fabric of being believe we enable this behaviour by funding games that do this. They won't see a penny from me. I'd be absolutely happy to pay a monthly subscription to fund UPDATES. But when I buy a game for PREMIUM AAA RATES, I expect a fucking AAA game with 0 requirement for additional purchases. IF you allow additional purchases you ruin my experience of the game because nothing has any value, the game becomes nothing more than a complicated vending machine.

Amazon Games Studio hasn't really had a win in a while. They've been dumping money into Lumberyard (the engine they bought the rights too from CryTek). Management at that studio has a strong incentive to release a profitable product, if they don't want their department to be sold off like SOE was. WoW had a monthly transaction fee, which kept them profitable. An MMO has running costs and if you don't have a monthly fee you have to come up with something to fund the game. I'm not saying microtransactions are the answer, but the money has to come from somewhere. Amazon may have a ton of money, but their Games Studio is massively in the red. That's a main driver for this cash shop. They're just a bad developer, with many failed projects, and so the players get screwed.

I don't like being reminded my irl wallet exists when I see cash-shop things in a fantasy experience. Doesn't matter if it's cosmetic or not, it hurts the experience. The more you attach it to real-life systems that I'm trying to escape from, the farther from appeal it becomes. I'll shovel money for products that get my cash and let me enjoy shit undiluted. Im not sure how i should think about it . But, there will always be a way to cheat / cash in these games. If Blizzard do not selling gold / gametime / then illegal sides do this and there will be no change at all that ppls gonna buy progress. So... hopefully NewWorld act's like blizzard and keep the micro transactions as small as possible. I dont like boosts, but i dont give a fuck about skins and else. Aswell i would prefer a monthly subscription instead of Premium (bonusXP) and these stuff to keep the servers up and have good support and contend.

The thing about a company adding any form of p2w is that it actively legitimizes it. When people had to buy gold from 3rd party sites (at the risk of being banned), people bought A LOT less gold than they do now. Moreover, because it wasn't encouraged/allowed by blizzard, there was far more of a community perception that it was a "bad" thing to do. That made it so players to some degree policed each other with it, which can't really happen now.

I played MMOs from 99 and never had the best stuff, but just knowing that carrot was out there, and seeing people IN that best stuff was cool. What I had, I earned and felt good about it. We all paid the same fee and were all on the same playing field. I got lost in the world and felt like I was another character. I dont feel this anymore, it is gone. Thats a great way of burning all of your money very quickly. By the way, Ashes of Creation was funded by some wealthy dude and even they have cash shop with mount skins and stuff. The game cannot survive without it nowadays. A lot of games were not even able to survive on subscription, because unless you have a massive player base like WoW used to have, it does not pay enough. A cash shop can be used moderately or it can be exploited to horrible outcomes. But it is not true that all cash shops are bad, it always depends on what compromises the players can make, so the company can survive and be profitable.

The majority of games I used to love I don't play anymore period though I wish to see a change I never feel hopeful for it. I just miss the days games were seen as a form of art love and passion. We're having too many normies join and having to deal with corporate companies milking us dry cause of those normies. I already find it outrageous enough we have to pay a game as a SERVICE and therefore we rent a game and don't own it. The box price + sub fee should be more than enough to cover all costs.

dude for real! my friend did this with pokemon he traded for some high lvl pokemon online and then rushed to the end. i had it for weeks and was taking my time then he ruined it for me too cause all he wanted to do was endgame stuff that wasnt that interesting. he rushes through borderlands as well and it just rips the fun from the game

Im sorry but theres a big hypocrisy here; yes the boosts are definitely one thing but saying oh cosmetics blah blah pay for blue is bad when you buy the game unlike PoE but have you seen the prices for PoE cosmetics? You will quickly surpass the amt paid for New World in mtx for PoE after just a couple purchases... Also at least it seems in new world w/o mtx your character will look alright; in poe you look homeless unless you buy stuff

They both know about the Ashes cash shop situation. Kira have talked about it many times but it's one of those that he "can tolerate". It's currently $5-$25 for skins in Ashes. Everything requires you to own the right type of item in order to apply the skins except the Costumes which is a horrible design mistake. The appearance of the Costumes at least should've been progression based just like regular in-game armors. They promised the quantity and quality of in game armor will match the cash shop, with the most prestigious skins only available as in game achievables. Let's see if they can keep their promise once the game has launched. If not, the game is dead immediately.

AoC has had monthly FOMO cosmetics on rotation for literal years... Some companies still make single purchase, no store games, but not in the live service/ MMO space.

Is there a RU-vidr that has EVER suggested a realistic way of how games companies should make their money? ActiBlizz (as one example) do not make excessive profit, its decidedly average. I personally don't mind SOME of the cash shop items, yet some cash shop items for some games are deal breakers, for me. If these YT commentators were so good at running a reasonably profitable company they would be doing that! The business professionals within these companies do weigh up the pros and cons of monetisation, to suggest, as YT'ers usually do, that they don't do that, is facile. I pay my £8 (c.$10)/month for wow which hasn't increased since forever. I would happily pay a bit more (12-15) for no cash shop but that is only my opinion. Someone playing from Brazil or Russia may have an entirely different one.

I agree about PoE having the best monetization out there. You can play the game for free forever, but if you want to play it seriously you MUST buy some stash tabs. And you reach this point after ~30-50 hours as a new player. After that time I hope you feel like paying something to the developers for the amazing job they did. You could argue that stash tabs are P2W because you will be much more efficient with proper stash management and conveniently trade items, but it doesn't scale, you buy the tabs once and that's it, buying more doesn't benefit you at all. The only concern is 3rd party RMT... but that's a different discussion.

This is all too reminiscent of the Black Desert Online launch. Upon launch they introduced a costume that would hide your name from other players. Whether this is P2W feature i don't know but people went with it. Now the game has sooo many P2W features because they kept getting away with it. I'm afraid this is bound to happen to New World. yes yes, BDO is a korean MMO and they do things differently but all big cooperations have one thing in common, MONEY.

The problem with Asmongold and most people complaining about cash shop with cosmetics inside is that they're people who have ''no life'' outside of WoW (or the game they're complaining about) and their only value in life is having more internet pixel to flex. Why are you collecting stuff in game to flex on people instead of collecting stuff in game because you like it ? The best items in the game are not locked behind paywalls. And even people complaining about WoW tokens etc act like people weren't buying runs, gold etc already back in classic. If your enjoyment is linked to feeling better and cooler than others because you play 10 hours a day so you can get that rare mount drop, you should be going to a psychologist to get your issues fixed instead of crying about in-game cosmetic cash shops. That's why games like LoL are more popular than MMORPG now, you don't have to grind for hours non-stop and if something looks good and you feel like it's worth the $ you just buy it.

Talking about MMOs, back in the days when people were naive about online payments, we had monthly fees and the user's experience was fine for two important reasons: subscriptions somehow sorted the playerbase and in-game shops weren't a thing. Then kiddos,crybabies and bot owners flooded the forums complaining about the fees being too expensive; a pack of cigarette and a cheap pizza, yeah very expensive... Now if you want to keep up with the game without losing your mental health, you have to buy the title itself, pay for a plus account plan, buy boxes from the in-game shop with items needed to progress which are normally unobtainable and so on. And I won't talk about the black market or overly generous game masters.

If your game costs money it should not have microtransactions. Plain and simple. If someone pays for your game it should include everything with that purchase. DLCs should be full expansions, not just extra chapters they already have completed that they just removed from the main game to get more money out of us.
