Amazon ships straight to Jamaica | Cheaper than Couriers? 

A few months ago, I shipped a digital picture frame from New York to a relative in Mandeville, Jamaica. I paid $150 for the picture frame. It took six weeks to get to its destination. I paid over $75 in phone calls to speak to various people in the supply chain. I paid over $350 in Jamaica customs duties and fees. There were several other charges along the way. All told, I paid a little over $800 to purchase and ship a digital picture frame to Jamaica. That was all that was in the package. I used UPS for the entire process. What a nightmare! In future, I will just buy a plane ticket and it will be cheaper.

Amazon needs to have a base in Jamaica

From what I’m seeing it’s cheaper to ship things below the threshold with a courier and cheaper to ship directly if over the threshold.

If Jamaica customs be lenient with amazon deliveries so that Jamaicans could use them more often. Amazon could have a few warehouses in Jamaica which would be easier for people shopping on Amazon platform.

We DO have zip codes, people just aren't familiar with them since they only came in around 2008. The format is eg. JMAKN06 JM (Jamaica) A (Your county, wether Cornwall, Middlesex, or Surrey -A. Look what letter represents your county) KN (Abbreviation for kingston, or first & last letter of your parish name - without the "Saint" part) 06 (The number that represents your area's post office, look it up)

We do have postal code in Jamaica. You can Google for your area.

Another thing. Amazon puts customers first. That's their standard here in the UK, am sure that's their standard in other countries. No matter what happened to the item you will be refunded as long as you're within the time of return policies. Sometimes the companies which operate under Amazon purposely delay the refund. Even when message them they delayed to reply. Whenever they behaved like that, I bypassed them and complained to Amazon customer service and they refunded me straight away. Some sub-companies which operate under Amazon won't ship to Jamaica.

your post office has a postal code. So items like the SD card which are posted via USPS can go to your post office easily- the big items can come via dhl to your door= especially if you use a w3w address line in Delivery Notes

If that's the shipping cost for Jamaica I rather used a courier, way cheaper with or without Amazon Prime. I have successfully return a very narrow shoes back to Amazon via DHL for free (got funded both cost and shipping)

I do alot of online shopping so this is something interesting to try. But i think for me tho it would make more sense for things over the 100 threshold because me courier is actually quite reasonable for the smaller priced things

Very interesting and informative video. I entered the information for this specific product(dji cam) in my courier's calculator and the estimated cost would be abt J$6K. Wat i'd like to see is an item above $100 USD and over 10 lbs in weight because most couriers charge based on weight.

There’s also a carton size criteria that come into play. Over a certain set of height/width/length total dimensions items become ineligible.

I heard about this and never paid any attention to it until I saw your video and I listened. Well, it seems to be true. I immediately added my local address to my Amazon account and will order something to see how it goes. Of course, it is more expensive however it is the convenience that you pay for. Good move Amazon.

Amazon also calculates the custom cost so you know what you have tod pay upfront. If it's less then they will give you back the difference.

I have been ordering from Amazon for the last 10 years, and it always comes right to my gate. Only once did I ever have to deal with customs. However, I have never returned anything, for the same reason cost too much, but now you taught me something.

US$33 is expensive for shipping and handling... I use ASAP Express which costs JM$750+ (depending on the weight/lb) and if I need to be delivered right to my door, that's an extra JM$800.. And regardless of how many packages you have for them to deliver to your door, it's the same. In fact, IF another package reaches before they leave out to deliver to your door, they will just carry it as well. That's JM$1,550... US$33 is over JM$5,000 for 3 items. The only advantage is that you don't get charged US 7% sales tax. However, for items over the US$100, it does make sense.. Also, they seem to ship & deliver faster than ASAP Express. Another advantage above ASAP Express and recently, MailPac Express, you can purchase it and have it shipped/delivered without paying any extra-fee or any hassle. I used to order items from Amazon over the US$50 (now US$100) threshold through MailPac Express, but they don't seem to offer that service anymore. ASAP Express doesn't offer that service at all. So, for these reasons, I will be looking Amazon shipping to Jamaica for my next orders over the US$100 threshold.

This is why Amazon is the behemoth it is. Customer service. Besides, the cost to ship a return is nothing compared to the revenue they make. I live in the US, so understandably, things are a little easier with issues like this. But I was even shocked when I wanted to return an item and Amazon said "keep it. We'll ship you a replacement." It's cheaper for them to just send another one than to pay for the return and the threat of losing a Prime member. I'm surprised they didn't do that in this case. I don't know what kind of shoes you returned but JMD18000 (that DHL was going to charge you) is ~US120, which isn't chump change, seemed a lot for shipping a pair of shoes. Of course, there are people who try and do take advantage of this kind of service and will likely make it more difficult for others in the future.

Using Packit4u is still cheaper than this. The weight of your package would be about 3lbs which shipping costs for book and cards 1100JMD (7.5 USD) which is 26USD less than what you paid to ship. For the DJI cam this may be more competitive in pricing. Do another video doing a comparison between the same products step by step. Would be interesting.

Actually Jamaica has Postal Codes, you'd be surprised to know that many Chinese merchants are aware of the Postal Code for every single Jamaican post office district in every parish in Jamaica. Yes, while many 'Amaicans' (so Americanized, they might as well drop the J), don't even know that there is such a thing.

This is best for heavy items or items over 100 since Amazon does not charge shipping by the pound.

Great content bro. I sell on Amazon and didn't know they have made it so easy now. Give us an update on the comparison with local couriers as soon as you can. Last time I checked some local courier companies are way more expensive. Amazon will likely offer a better price than the more expensive couriers. The competition is good though.

I always saw the import charges for items whenever I'm not logged in but I was usually checking some small/cheap item so it was always outrageous to me. Seeing how much they charge for expensive items changes things a lot. If you brought that camera in the typical couriers, you'd 100% pay more than 18%. Electronics, excluding computer parts attract ~45-50%. For anything above the $100, or anything heavy, I'm definitely gonna get it straight from Amazon, especially if it shows up that quickly. The smaller items would be cheaper through couriers cause that $35 shipping is a lot.

What I do is check my shipping company cost and compare it that of Amazon, sometimes it's cheaper with Amazon sometimes it's cheaper through the shipping company.

Normally amazon send the label to put on the return package to your email. So, i was a bit shocked when you stated that it cost you to return it.

You should purchase another dji through a courier to see the charges and then return for your refund. Mailpac offers free returns. In very curious. Shipping seems more expensive than couriers but duties seems less. Looks like it could go either way but very interesting

So if what I understand from this video using a courier service for shipping items under the threshold is cheaper for instance the company I use I pay no tax to Amazon so if I buy an item for $70 I’m paying $70 for it and $850 to clear it with is fine As when it come to an item over the threshold and seeing that if it was any other company I dunno who else does the no tax thing but If you do you’d pay a lil like $12-18 depending on the item. Now I know shipping and handling is a bit more but don’t look at it like that tax and shipping and everything in one money. If I would ship an item to my services for a 850 US Dollar item is have to pay an estimate of $37,499 to clear it (Excluding the weight of the item) if it was straight to DHL I’d pay only $24,000 and I doubt they do by weight based off the video Larger items over the threshold are better to ship straight in my opinion and it’s also fast than the shipping services and they deliver that excellent services man good video didn’t know this was possible

I bit of misinformation here, Jamaica DOES have zipcodes (aka Postal codes) just google the one for your location.

Shipping companies with mailing addresses is cheaper than Amazon rates tested it on the same product Amazon was $25 more than my shipping company and my shipping company delivered it faster too

I just tested the process and ordered a $15 shirt the shipping came to $25 At the moment I use a 3rd party courier and they charged by the weight this shirt would cost $4 to bring to Jamaica, many items invoke free us delivery even without having prime but even with delivery of $7 to send in the us it still only comes to $11 to ship. I order a lot of smaller lighter items so using the 3rd party courier service is more cost effective me. However on larger heavier items the method you showed would work out better. thank you for sharing. I wasn't aware you could order direct with some items. great upload.

Amazon collected a Customs deposit which they said would be refunded as my item was below the $100 limit. Three months later, no refund and no way to query it on the Amazon Website. I will be sticking with my shipping company in the future

Still think the couriers are way better tho because for example most couriers dont know the cost of the dji camera and even customs dont know the cost either. So most couriers charge between 700ー800 per pound. So you pay 150 us dollars to ship that camera when you could have just paid 800 jamaican dollars. You wasted money bro.... The only good thing about amazon shipping to jamaica is that it is faster but way more expensive if you really look into it....

Someone mentioned it already but I'm also going to say it again, Jamaica does have postal codes. I'll put a few here: Kingston: JMAKN02, JMAKN05 and JMAKN06 and Clarendon: JMDCN01, JMDCN15, and JMDCN25. You can find find them online. They have been there for years.
