Dude! Amazon designed this hardware, and they decided, "Hey, just hang a cheap-o USB hub off of it, and we are good!" It should have all the ports built in my friend.

It’s just a Fire TV cube with a custom os…

The Cube really does need USB 3 and Gigabit ethernet. Hopefully repurposing them as thin clients will get us at least one of these in the next hardware refresh - I would not want to run a second monitor from a USB 2 port, as viewing videos, scrolling and dragging windows around would be rough.

It appears that they just repurposed an Amazon Fire TV Cube which only has 1 USB port. Also, this explains the IR port!

Very impressive being able to develop such a broad set of physical and software technologies. I would like to know more about what is actually running on the device as a host. Some Linux OS I guess.

Uhmm...This is a thin client. This means it only uses online memory and does not store any data offline on it. If you want to work with servers then you would probably just login to your AWS workspace from the thin client. From there go to your EC2 instances in AWS where you can host your Linux OS. Anyway, this device is not for hosting servers or any software.

Is it possible to substitute with a thin client box using DIY device (ex: raspberry pi or nuc)? Or does this strictly work only with the box that you provide?

It would real thin if cube is thiner. Apart from that, it would be better if it doesn't need the hub because i guess it has enough room for more ports inside, imagine the same idea but using the same space as a raspberry/orange pi
