‘Amazonia’ (1987) by Edward McGuire was written as a homage to the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. This work references characteristic motifs and harmonies by Villa-Lobos and develops a tone row from his ‘Chôros no.2’ for flute and clarinet.
McGuire uses a rich palette of extended techniques to convey the diversity of life in the Amazonian rainforest and the threats faced by that fragile ecosystem and it’s indigenous inhabitants.
Commissioned and first-performed by Phillip Thorne. Played on a Michael Gee guitar.
Editing and mastering by Iain Coleman
