Ambassador Hotel Demolition Blackpool

I bring you the emergency demolition of the Ambassador Hotel in Blackpool on Tuesday 24th November. The immediate demolition caught me by surprise as I expected them to clearout the derelict building before starting. I arrived to capture the action after they had already started on the top floors.

It is always sad when you see old buildings with character being demolished. All new builds look he same. Inside with all the modern facilities they look good. If they can be renovated then great. This one was clearly going to be more cost effective by destroying. I guess the new houses/hotel/flats or what ever will take it's place will keep the hotels name (hopefully) However sadly, it is one of many and more to come, losses of past times as we knew it . Not only for Blackpool, all over. Great timing for this one! Well Done!

There's one scaffolding company here in Vienna that had a few embarassing accidents in the past 20 years or so. Twice scaffolding came down in storms, damaging cars and houses on the other side of the street and once they had to take everything down because it was leaning away from the house more and more. I'd usually change my route on windy days if I saw any signs of that contractor!

This would have been unthinkable only 20 years ago, but several hotels up at South Shore have suffered a similar fate. Changing social patterns, foreign holidays and easy access to Blackpool have meant that most families no longer spend a week or two at the seaside as in the past. Blackpool has suffered as a consequence, which is very sad, especially when one has sen the resort in its heyday. The Ambassador Hotel was probably in its prime during the 1930s and the following decades until the 1980s.

It's gonna take some real skill and luck not to damage the Rutland next door, alot of the work to ensure damage isn't caused(cutting girders and roof supports) is normally done before demolition starts to take place but obviously that hasn't been possible here. Some of them girders etc, will run through both properties.

When I mentioned about the Ambassador to my parents, my mother said her and my father had stayed there, she checked through her old diaries and found that it was 2007, she remembers thinking that it was very run down then. She also said the receptionist told them there was a lift, but it was at the back of the hotel. I'm guessing that a totally inappropriate building will replace it. I assume from the number of vlogs on You Tube yesterday, there must have been quite a line of people with cameras filming the Ambassador, though you still seem to be the only one posting every day, and are still the best.

Stayed there with a coach party for 3 years running in 1988 -90. Great food at that time and had entertainment in bar area. Some rooms were ensuite but others not although more were planned to be. Seemed a busy hotel then but Blackpool like many seaside resorts does not attract so many people for holidays nowadays. As it was in dangerous state, best that it is demolished. But what will replace it and President Hotel I wonder.

I wonder whether the owners of the building have been waiting for this opportunity for quite a while. The building looks as though it has long since got into too bad a state of disrepair to do anything with. I hope Blackpool Council pass on the bill for the demolition to the owner and compel him to deal with the bomb site and redevelop it within a reasonable period. If he won't do it because there is not enough profit for him then, take the site off him and get somebody else to redevelop it. I would think that because it is an end terrace of a whole block the replacement building will have to match the rest of the row.

Problem with taking site off him is that they are then liable for all the costs!!! Covid19 has fucked councils up big time & the last thing they need is extra costs. Owners will just go bankrupt & walk away, what can the authorities do!! Sweet FA!!

The owner definitely has plans to develop the site as long as the plans are accepted.

You can just imagine some holidaymaker once booked a holiday there when it was at the height of it popularity and today it is reduced to rubble. It's a shame and unfortunately I can see more following it after the Covid fallout takes a grip.

I hope they didn't want their scaffolding back !

An oversight on the part of the demolition company or the scaffolding company; they should have liaised with each other before demolition began as scaffolding is usually only hired out rather than sold.

This was fanastic footage but sooooo sad to see imagine all the good old time been had in that building over the many years it stood. Me and my partner stayed In the hotel to left of it in ausgust/ sep 2020and as we walked past this building one day in strong winds you could see the left back end at 8.10 actually swaying in the wind so sad to see left like that we spoke to Rutland staff about the building and they said the council have issued a demolishment order but never been granted so my guess is they work was done by council/ contractors and billed to owner ??
