Amber's Recurrency Jump | USPA Recommendations for Skydivers

Finally, after 365 days of not skydiving, we got Amber back in the sky for her recurrency jump! The United States Parachute Association sets recommendations for skydivers "currency," which basically means how active they are in the sport.
If you jump regularly, you're considered current. If you haven't jumped in a while, they suggest refresher training appropriate for your skydiving history. If you've got 1,000 jumps, you probably don't need as much refresher training as someone who has 30 jumps.
Anyway here are the basic considerations for doing a recurrency jump.
A License holders who haven't done a jump within the previous 60 days should do at least one jump with a USPA Instructional Rating holder (usually a coach). For B licenses, that extends to 90 days. For C & D Licenses, 180 days.
After long layoffs, like a year, skydivers should do more refresher training. We reviewed jump run, spotting to make sure your exit point and freefall drift would take you back to the dropzone, and calculating ground speed of the aircraft so you can communicate exit separation. Then we reviewed the Check of 3's: your 3-ring release, 3 harness strap cinch points, and your 3 handles. I had Amber deploy at 4,000 feet so she could do some practice flares, and we reviewed packing the canopy a little as well since it had been so long.
If there had been any changes in dropzone procedure, or new flight patterns, I would've gone over that as well.
At any rate, she did a great job and it's nice to have my sky buddy back.
Thanks for watching, we'll see you next time!

I just started skydiving again this fall after being away from skydiving for 27 years. I did 26 jumps back in 1991. I had to start all over again and do a student jump and so I am progressing as fast as I can so I can start free falling again like I did back in 1991.

Nice! Welcome back. How different is the sport now as compared to then?
@BigfootCountry
@BigfootCountry 5 лет назад
A lot different back then it was like the wild west of skydiving. We did not have the box landing pattern you just had to face the wind on your landing and flair for a soft landing close to the target. In 1991 we had a dirt runway at a farmers field. Now the drop zone is at the Moose jar airport with a paved runway and a nice hanger for a clubhouse

Yeah I remember at Mile Hi a lot of the older jumpers would just fly straight in and it would cause landing issues with everyone doing a pattern. I prefer Sebastian because the landing pattern is very defined. I jump to have fun not to risk my butt lol

Great video. Your little one should be a big buddy now. I just finished my AFF course and still need 12 jumps to get the License A ;) I love video editing as well. Can I ask how did you add the Altimeter legend to your video? That looks cool :)
@PernDog
@PernDog Год назад
Yep and he's got two littler buddies to go along with him! I built the altimeter in Apple Motion - there was a clock template so I edited it to look like an altimeter and then exported the add-on to Final Cut. Then I had to match the animation to the actual altitude which actually turned out pretty well.

BTW, I’m on jump 18. Looking forward to finishing my A so I can go other places. We have an awesome DZ that looks similar to yours. I also served back in the 80’s (swing with the wing!) so it’d be fun to catch up down there or at Skydive Carolina here. Lots to talk about. Keep posting! SFMF

Awesome dude if I had the chance to go through AFF and A License again I totally would. It was so exciting and new. You’ll have to come to a Seb boogie one day! We aren’t very mobile with the baby these days and our travel money is spent taking him to see family because that’s super important to us. But it’s always good to meet a former Marine SF

Look at Zapata's flyboard air and incorporate it into your wing suit flying sport. Here's a link to their website zapata.com/air-products/flyboardair

How did you get the altimeter on the video? Is that a gps download or something or is it just a plugin "estimate"

What should you do if you lose control and start spinning?
@PernDog
@PernDog 5 лет назад
Relax, arch, make sure your arms and legs are square. Mainly relax lol. 🤙🏻 if you’re spinning to the right then dip your left shoulder. If you’re spinning to the left then dip your right shoulder. Lean into it. If you’re still spinning after that then it’s your legs that are jacked. Apply toe pressure and lean the way you want to go. Like an airplane.

Hey! I'm (was) an extremely novice skydiver with a total of 15 jumps. Due to financial reasons i had to stop jumping for the last year. As somebody who didnt progress all the way to their A license would i have to repeat the aff course or is there a different process that goes into retraining aff students? as a side note i was also considering the possibility of gaining 1-2 hours of tunnel experience before hand to make the return to skydiving a little smoother. Anybody can answer by the way :)
@PernDog
@PernDog 5 лет назад
Dean it depends on your instructors what kind of training you’ll need. Most likely they will drop you back to AFF but it might just be one instructor. Tunnel time will definitely help with your technique but it usually won’t change the requirements. Good luck!
@CEnjoyer
@CEnjoyer 5 лет назад
@@PernDog thanks a lot for the insight! Considering i have moved interstate since i last jumped would you suggest going directly to my local dz or return to my old dz and smash out the aff and A license in a week or 2? Sorry for all the questions!
@PernDog
@PernDog 5 лет назад
@@CEnjoyer I would go to the new DZ, bring your logbook and see what they say. USPA guidelines say if it's been a year you'll need extensive retraining, especially at your skill level so I wouldn't be surprised if they start you at AFF 4 or even earlier. At this point in your skill progression it's important to take things slow, just remember that being a beginner is awesome and you only get to be a beginner at something once!

What are your thoughts on skydiving while pregnant? Asking for a girl lol
@PernDog
@PernDog 4 года назад
I think it introduces unnecessary risk. One hard opening could be a real problem, or a collision or bad landing. Although I do know of people who continue skydiving through the 2nd trimester we don’t think it’s the best idea.
@clayb1832
@clayb1832 4 года назад
Yea I’m with you on that. I have a friend that’s pregnant (first trimester) and she’s trying to get her A license in Clewiston before anyone notices her bump haha I’ve been dragging my 5 year old boy to dz’s the last few weekends it’s so awesome to see his fascination with it all.
