Ian, what an excellent video. This is the first youtube tutorial I've seen for 'ambient music composition' that actually shows some composition and not someone twiddling software knobs! This was so useful and I'll be applying these lessons in my projects.

Great video, Ian.. succinct and and to-the-point, and yet packed with details and tips. You have a real talent, my friend, for sharing what some might consider the complexities of Music Theory, in a very accessible and informal way..a real joy to watch your work. 🙂👍

That is a very clear and understandable explanation of chord progressions. I have spent many many years as a semi-pro sound engineer working in both live and recording situations (mostly in the acoustic/folk field) plus creating Am Dram sfx and despite having worked closely with many talented pro musicians I never managed to catch music off of them. 😄 Thanks for making basic music theory relatable to an ignoramus in such things. I am sub-ed so I am looking forward to plowing through your 'back catalogue'. Cheers from Scotland.

Very kind of you to say so, Steve , but not everyone seems to share your view and, unfortunately, I have to dance with RU-vid's algorithm 😢 Might I suggest you use the Timeline times to jump to the tutorial bit which,is far cleaner 😊

Such a great walkthrough that's perfect for beginners as you say, but it's also great for those who've been around the block a few times. It's nice to hear and see things spelled out sometimes just as a way of being refreshed. I picked up several new angles that I found really helpful and hope to be able to work them into my future music. Thanks so much Ian!!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm missing something for sure.. :( I cannot find the Preset PD Rising Start on my preset list... 😟😟😟
@IanWaugh
@IanWaugh 2 месяца назад
Hi - the actual preset is not really important, you just need to use a pad you like which can be from any synth at all. Some of the synths in your DAW - whatever it is - will have lots of pads.. I think the Vital pad I used was one of a free set by Chris (www.youtube.com/@s1gns0fl1fe) although I'm afraid I can't recall exactly under which video this one came from. But don't sweat it 😊
