A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
There are few options for granular synthesis in the hardware world. The Tasty Chips GR-1 has the right level of control, via its knobs and faders, and visual feedback, via its generous screen, to make granular synthesis fast, fun, and hands-on. Plus it's got 11-voice polyphony, four different timbres to play all at once, a dedicated filter on each timbre, and some effects for in a pinch. Not only can you create granular synth sounds, but you can also play looped "clouds" of the sample, or just straight sample playback at different rates, pitches, and directions. In short, the GR-1 overcomes all my issues with using software granular on (for example) my iPad, and makes the process just as fun as using subtractive synthesis.
Speaking of subtractive synths, the Take 5 continues to be a gem. Considering it's an introductory synth in the Sequential line-up, it is an amazing sounding synth with an excellent design, a nice keybed, and useable effects. It's rare to find a polysynth with a strong low end, but the Take 5 really can fill out the spectrum. I love it.
This track is the result of my Patreon's holiday collaboration, in which we all sent samples to a recipient, and received samples from a "secret syntha", and made songs from these samples. It culminated in a listening party on New Year's Eve and was a ton of fun. Thanks so much to Som Shankhar (pad sample) and jean-louis proust (drum sample) for the inspiration and the loops here!
Tasty Chips GR-1 - Three granular loops (piano, pad, sparkle) and one playback loop (drums)
Strymon NightSky - Reverb for the GR-1
Sequential Take 5 - Main synth pad
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

This one hits hard. Personally, I think you excel on these tracks that pair the feeling of a bursting emotion held barely in restraint with ... a restricted setup . Your Ambient Doom Hydrasynth DFAM one, being my other favourite. They'd work well as a pair on an E.P.

I was listening via AirPods with my phone in another room. That first big chord from the Sequential had me running to find out what was happening. Epic. Also great music, as always.

Damn, that Take 5 sounds beautiful. First chord that hit me gave me instant goosebumps.

the drums you fade in at about 2:05 are they just playing back? Or is there also some granular madness going on? Asking because I wanted to know if you could use this as a "sampleplayer" also while granularing the other parts.

Fantastic as always. The Take 5 seems to just have that presence a lot of other synths lack. Like, a hint of OB6 but still its own thing. Thanks for that space like OST. Very calming!

I thought the GR1 was great but not so sure about the Take 5 - it didn't seem to sit well and felt a bit out of place to me. Glad you like it and hope you'll use it again so I get another listen.

Ohhh TAKE5 I recently became super interested with this beautiful synth, it's a real modern vintage masterpiece with beautiful effects and straight forward interface. And the Jam is so brillient as always, thank you!

And I have a tiny question. If I can only choose one Poly synth, except for TAKE5 would you recommand the KORG Prologue? As far as I know it's pure analog as TAKE5(for the main signal path except for digital effects I think) and has beautiful sounds. Thanks and happy new year Jay! Wish you all the best:)

@@_alexxon I had a Prologue but never got sounds I was 100% satisfied with from it. That said, I know others really love it, so it's probably just an issue of taste. Best of luck, and thanks!

woah, that Take 5 really dominates. needs some low-mid attenuation. Makes me think that part of the reason Moog's became so popular is the loss of bass as resonance goes up, which can be a very good thing in a mix.

Gorgeous one again, Jay! How do you feel about Take 5 vs Dreadbox Nymphes?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 года назад
Both are great. Comparable levels of quality of sound, though the Take 5 has more low end and the Nymphes has more "character", for lack of a better term. Nymphes is obviously better for a budget, or small setup, or if you have too many keybeds; Take 5 is better if stereo sound matters for you, or if you like a variety of effects, or like a keybed with your synth, or if you need versatility from warm to deep to bright. Hope that helps!

Tasty indeed! But you'd think that a company that could make an inexpensive yet impressive Six-Track machine in 1980 could give us the extra voice in 2021? Yeah, I know that Focusright owns it now, but still....
@noahtotten
@noahtotten 2 года назад
Yeah, probably to keep the price reasonable. Many don’t realize that adding an extra voice on an analog poly synth is literally adding another mono synth to the machine. 2 more oscillators, another filter, adsr, VCA, etc.
@genepozniak

@@noahtotten Dude, you don't think chips have gotten smaller and cheaper in 46 years? :-)
