This is fascinating. I had no idea that 360 video had its own accompanying audio format that can be altered in real-time with the movement of the camera, but duh...that make total sense. All that being said, re-purposing a format from the 70s is wild. If you could go back in time and chat with those engineers, their minds would likely be blown.

Totally! My understanding is that, in the '70s, they were mostly trying to do audiophile recordings of classical music, but admittedly I haven't researched that much yet. Perhaps that's a good topic for another day.

How amazing that I stumble across this video! I’m doing a research about Ambisonic recording techniques and how they could be helpful for musicians during their practice and performance. Are you familiar with the new function of Apple’s AirPods Pro to enable spatial audio playback feature? I think it is going to be very helpful in the near future.

Wow. Interesting stuff. As a composer, I've been interested in the expressive potential of these immersive technologies, but I hadn't thought about the possibilities for supporting the practice and performance of traditional music. Hope your research goes well!

Hi there, question for you, it wouldn't be possible to be able to listen to anything more than a stereo recording in headphones, correct? So to properly consume the playback as intended with more than a left-right, are your only options using multiple physical speakers? I'm curious is there's a technology that would somehow make compensations on 4+ channels of audio to be able to produce a "3d" like effect in headphones. Very cool video, I'm really excited to explore the channel more!

Headphones can be used to decode an ambisonic (or other immersive audio) track as binaural (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FMdabRXWwDE.htmlsi=Wj_OkjFWZOYMqABz), but your mileage may vary, especially with front/back (as opposed to up/down). There's also the possibility of head tracking an immersive audio recording or environment and decoding that into binaural in real time.

That was probably in the mix of things I was reading at the time (4years ago!), but that book is far more technically advanced than this video.😆 Maybe a good “next steps”

Arkham city had ambi Sonic audio and it’s pretty crazy it rotates when you spin the camera

Hi Simon, I have a maybe interesting Qestion. The thing is i want to Monitor Ambisonic using OSC with the Sparta Binauraliser. I want to use pure Data to get the Rotation of my VR Headset into the OSC to be Listend to by the Sparta Plugin. Maybe you can point me to a Tutroial, or have a tip for me on how to get the Headset into PD.

Sounds like a cool project! I'm not sure I know a good tutorial for those specific things. I talk a bit about OSC here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tJ2Kocl-2m4.html, then it'd be a matter of doing the math based on the accelerometer information from the headset (which is not at all trivial!). Good luck. Keep me posted on how it goes!
