This video is a game changer for me! Brilliant instructions you have made here. I learned about ambisonics back in 1987 when I went to a sound engineering school in Oslo, Norway. My teacher had a Calrec Soundfield microphone that we got to play around with a little and he said it cost around $4500. I always wanted to buy one but never could see the worth of spending that much money just for playing around with ambisonics. I went into the live sound business after school and there was never any demand for ambisonics in my work. My interest for ambisonics never died though and now you have shown me the perfect way for not having any excuse left for not getting into ambisonic recording. Thank you so much for this video. I am definitely subscribing to this channel.

I just spent an hour devouring your mic build videos. Really cool stuff. I want to get into building mics and I know how to solder, but I don't know much about circuit boards and building electronics. Any tips on ways/places to learn the basics?
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth 2 года назад
I am just starting some basics stuff. First one will be soldering. I find as a skill, a lot of people dont know this. You are ahead of the curve for that!. For the basics and analog stuff (and free) I recommend the Navy Electricity and Electronics Training Series: www.compatt.com/Tutorials/NEETS/NEETS.html

LOL... I wish I had seen this before buying the Sennheiser Ambeo. I would have been able to build the mic and buy a 3d printer and have some extra gas money to drive me to recording sites. Fantastic!
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth Год назад
That was kind of my motivation to build this. A decent price point for a really good microphone. The AmbiAlice is one of the quieter first order mics out there.
@CarlGeers
@CarlGeers Год назад
@@SoundSleuth how does it compare to the Sennheiser Ambeo? Also, the frequency response seems to be lacking in the low end. Is there another capsule that can give 20-20 response?
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth Год назад
@@CarlGeers it is not lacking in the low end. I’ve recorded orchestras, choirs semi trucks and other assorted things with it. I can’t compare directly to the Ambeo as I don’t have access to one.

D'oh. I had to stop and figure out what the Intro's background song was as it sounded so familiar.🤔 Then I realized it was Vaughan William's "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" and it was off of Peter Wier's "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". After that mystery was solved I could continue.😂

Thank you so much for this. Very well put together instructable. I would love to build this, but unfortunately field recorders with 4 and 8 preamps (maybe for a 2nd order mic, which you mentioned in a comment here) are quite expensive. I was also wondering, if it wouldn’t be necessary to calibrate the capsules and maybe also the preamps.
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth 2 года назад
The entire mic has a calibration file in the instructable I agree on the recorder pricing! I’m using a ZoomF6 and when in Ambisonic “A”mode all four channels are gain locked.

This it seems to me an awesome project. If I'd have an 4 track recorder, I'd definitely try to build it. The only concern is about the capsules JLI-2590A as I see into specs the frequency range is 20-10K Hz. I'd like to have something that goes up to 20K Hz. Isn't 10K Hz a bit limiting? Do you have a second recommendation for a higher specs capsules?

Was the voiceover audio recorded on an ambisonic mic? There's a lot of weird stereo glitching and I'm curious what's causing that. Love the build though!
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth 2 года назад
No I used a pair of my true condenser builds. There were two spots of plosives on the recording that was cross edited. I.e. left right swaps. Just didn’t quite feel like redoing it 😉

@@SoundSleuth Interesting! The first segment is fine, the segment after that (starting around 1:51) is when I noticed the change, almost like the mics are slightly out of sync, or perhaps a different gate/level on them. Recording in stereo can always be a bit funky :)

For the price this is definitely interesting. though i'm curious how this compares to something like the rode nt-fs1? would it require more expensive capsule to compare to such an expensive mic, or is the rode just overpriced?

This is really good mic for far less in cost. The Capsule I am using has a high S/N ratio so low self noise. I have not had a chance to do a side by side test. Works well in both nature recording and for Orchestra/Choir
