c. 1964
01:00:04 High angle shot of a clearing in the jungle. A man kneels on the ground and a man in uniform stands behind him (a CT or Communist Terrorist presumably). Camera moves in. Various shots of soldier striking the kneeling man (we don't actually see his hand make contact but we hear the sound of him hitting the man). Another soldier stands nearby and smiles. The kneeling man falls to the ground and is dragged back up again. C/U of his face from high angle, imploring look on his face. Shot of the sun followed by extreme C/U of the man's eyes, beads of sweat on his face and fear in his eyes. Soldier and man speak in foreign language and he is thrown to the ground. Another soldier walks up close to him and we hear the sound of a rifle shot. M/S of group of young children and young women who scatter on hearing the gunshot.
01:01:24 M/S of British soldiers making their way through the jungle. They hear the shot and head towards the sound. Woman runs scared through the jungle. British soldiers lift their guns and then motion the woman to walk towards them. Soldiers discuss the fact that they recognise the woman and that she is "a nice looking bird." One of the soldiers speaks to her in her own language. "Two Terrorists found out we were here" translates the soldier. The soldiers walk through the bush. C/U of a small fire. One of the terrorists carries a burning torch towards one of the village houses. He throws it into the doorway and the house catches fire. British soldiers creep through the jungle. They use sign language to communicate with each other. M/S of the bungalow burning. The soldiers enter the village. They look at the two dead bodies which lie on the ground. Soldiers run through the village checking for terrorists. One of the soldiers searches a hen house. Shot of the CTs walking through the jungle. One of the terrorists smiles.
01:04:40 C/U of two British soldiers smoking. Sequence showing the troop's commander speaking into a field telephone. We see the officer to whom he is speaking - very upper class accent.
01:04:50 He says: 'And don't walk into anything, good luck to you!" M/S of the CTs, one of them bends a branch over to mark their path. C/U of British soldier talking to a young girl in Malaysian. Various shots of British soldiers stalking the CTs through the jungle. Tension filled shots of the Communist Terrorists lying in wait in the jungle and the British soldiers finding the bent branch. The officer is suspicious - he suspects a trap. Various bird and animal noises add to the tension. Shots fire out and one of the British soldiers is wounded. More shots are fired, various shots of the ambush. C/Us of guns being fired, the CTs retreat. The commanding officer is wounded, one of the soldiers bandages his arm. The British soldiers return to the camp, a conversation about who is now in command takes place. Reinforcements to be sent the following day. M/S of makeshift operations room. Plan for sending out more men discussed. C/U of Corporal Maclaran (sp?). C/U of map.
01:11:13 L/S of early morning sky, two helicopters approach the village. Injured officer is carried by stretcher out of a building and into the clearing. The choppers scare some chickens. Choppers hover above the village - a woman and children stand in the wind current created by the helicopter. C/U of injured officer. Man is lowered from chopper on a line. More men and a dog are lowered. C/U of dog having his harness removed. Villagers watch as injured man is lifted into the helicopter. The Senior NCO asks where the replacement officer is and is told that there isn't one. Instructions are given for their next movements. Jokes are made about the dogs - they are sniffer dogs.
01:14:40 Soldiers put on their packs and leave the village. Various shots of the soldiers making their way through the jungle. One of the soldiers strokes one of the dogs. One of the soldiers jokes about the bullets whistling past them. Being asked what they were whistling he replies: "It's Been a Hard Day's Night." Another soldier shouts for them to "...cut out the talking." Various shots of the men making their way through the jungle - through rivers etc.
01:16:28 C/U of the Commanding NCO. A rope is stretched across a river and the men make their way across holding on to the rope. The dogs swim across. Various shots of the men following the dogs who have picked up the scent. One of the soldiers takes the bearing of a ridge ahead. Two soldiers chat and are told off by the Commanding NCO. Soldiers gather, communicating with sign language. The dogs have tracked the Communist Terrorists down.
Story continues on reel 2.

Thank you... and you are the first person to acknowledge the " Incident" here also. Many people don't understand how communism was stopped in the pacific back then from overtaking the West ,actually, by Islamic cultured countries on three Cold war fronts ... luckily for England and the United States, Communism is not acceptable in Islam and thus it did not take hold permanently in Malaysia , Indonesia or Pakistan and in the biggest Ally of all back then Turkey ,all of whom aided NATO tremendously . These countries held back communism when it was starting to Rampage through the Pacific and upper Levant even Syria back in the 1960's. All free people who do business need to thank these people for keeping us out of debt slavery also known as communism

You whispered, you walked spaced out, point man always had the submachine weapon, and you stayed off the well trodden paths - the Indons resorted to planting anti-personnel mines in the latter stages. The Australians suffered badly from land mines when they arrived. Local natives were sensibly used as trackers and troops stayed in country as long as 3 months - after which they were totally wasted physically and repatriated to Singapore.

Great film in the context of what it's meant to show, despite any 'artistic licence' here and there, casual talking etc (normally a whisper). They are at least using Silent Field Signals such Platoon Commander and Section Commander and so on. It's also good for uniform and equipment research for the era as it was contemporary then. Details like how they have Hession over their Entrenching Tools worn on their packs, 44' Pattern Webbing and packs and weapons (SLR, 7.62 mm Bren with 'straight' Magazine), river crossing, etc. Also the indigenous people and the 'enemy' look convincing.

As a American who was about 7 at the time I would never have known about these conflicts if not for hearing The Last Word In Rhodesian Is Ian by John Edmonds on RU-vid. That got Me interested as I recalled ads in Soldier of Fortune Magazine. We watched the Avengers , Scarecrow of Romney Marsh , the Prisoner was a Favorite of My Moms who is a big Patrick MaGoohan Fan. We watched a lot of British made movies and marionette shows for kids like Stingray, Fireball XL5, and Thunderbirds. I have to watch them on RU-vid now and still enjoy them. I like watching veteran interviews and reading their stories. If not for Rhodesian patriotic songs like Sweet Banana , Warriors Bold, Who Dares Wins, and other troopie songs like Shumba Drinkers and Its A Long Way To Mukumbura , what happened in those conflicts would be largely forgotten. Now I take special interest in the Troopie and Gane Ranger interviews , African History and the stories and songs of the South African’s and Para Bats. The Dog and Handler depicted remind me of John Edmonds Dog Squad and Roger was A Mine Dog. I had the pleasure of Meeting Nando Brown a retired British Marine when one of My Daughters attended one of His dog training clinics in Seattle. I like big game hunting , collecting and shooting all kinds of military arms from flintlock to present day . Love My 1858 two and three band rifled muskets, WW1 and 2 pattern 303 Enfields . Were there patriotic songs of that time in other Commonwealth Countries ? It makes Me Sad thinking about Canadian, British, Australian and New Zealander’s being disarmed and their countries being ripe for the picking and rapid occupation by overpowering communist forces. The Tough people of rural areas once armed and proud reduced to being eunuchs like the defenseless villagers in this movie.

I'm a bit confused by what exactly this dramatisation is supposed to be of. I'm guessing it's during the Malayan emergency but for the life of me, this village is confusing. The houses seem Orang Asli, but the lady who speaks to the Brit soldiers is wearing a Malay Kebaya and has no Orang Asli accent. What's more the Penghulu (village headman) is an ethnic Indian. I guess when they shot it back in '64, they just hired whoever they could from Kuala Lumpur went up Bukit Gasing. Never the less, I loved it. It's a window to the past plus I really dig Kebaya girl's beehive hairdo... Lol

Yeah, that got whoever cause for the target audience, they had no clue either so it doesn't matter. Like how in western countries Japanese/Chinese/Korean all basically are interchangeable. If people were more knowing of the differences they would be more choosing. But they don't, so film makers don't need to bother. Like seeing New Zealand/british actors playing Australians in basically every movie... pretty much ever. Its only noticeable if you have expert knowledge of how It's wrong. Remember to suspend disbelief if It's fiction or a reenactment . This is NOT a historical , legal document requiring nothing but pure truth, without artistic license to alter. Also I love steak sandwiches with thin cut scotch fileted steakums!

Interesting short film. Originally I thought this was depicting the Malayan Emergency, where British and Commonwealth forces waged a very effective counter-insurgency war and thankfully defeated the communists. But this is actually from the Indonesian Confrontation (1963-1966), where again the British Commonwealth forces waged an effective campaign and gave the Indonesians a smacked arse! Anyway, much respect to all those involved in preventing Malaya falling to the communists and Borneo, Malaya and Singapore to the Indonesian nationalists. 👍🏻

@Mal Preece The Brits had no business being in Malaya in the first place; and surely it was the business of the natives to decide for themselves their political system. The West only wanted the region to exploit its resources for its military, economic and strategic advantages, the welfare of the local natives be dammed!!
@malpreece5008
@malpreece5008 Год назад
@@uwanttono4012 You seem to have a very simplistic understanding of history. What do you mean ‘the Brits had no business being in Malaya’? They obviously did have business in Malaya, that’s why they went there! Are you opposed to any group of people, outside of ‘native’ Malays, being involved in Malay affairs, or are you just prejudiced towards the British? The vast majority of the anti-British communist support during the Malayan Emergency came from the minority ethnic Chinese population, whom the ‘native’ Malays held in contempt. The British had majority support during the insurgency, and that’s partly why they were able to defeat the communists.

@@malpreece5008 Simplistic or not it may be, but imperial Britain had no business occupying other peoples's lands and "lording it" over the natives. That can be said of ALL colonisers, not just Britain.
@malpreece5008
@malpreece5008 Год назад
@@uwanttono4012 All human groups have engaged in the same process of trade, conflict, domination, development/exploitation throughout the centuries. That process often involves one group ‘lording it’ over another, but it often brings about development and progress. The most exceptional thing about British rule in Malaya is that it bought with it modern infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools, banks, road and rail networks, modern forms of communication and industry. It planted the seeds of modern democracy, established a judiciary and shared the English language. The British Empire was by far the most benevolent empire that has ever existed, and it relied heavily upon local cooperation. The British had as much business being in south east Asia as any other people, but they left a more significant legacy.
