AMD ATHLON 64 X2 RICER PROJECT

AMD Athlon 64 X2 project. Called "Ricer' because of the old school parts, inside of a brand new case. Built and filmed mostly August thru December of 2017, I finished this project to the point shown in this video. Possible plans for this system is an SSD, probably an SLI setup of some kind, though a power supply upgrade might have to be done. Something DirectX10 capable will be needed for future benchmark comparisons, as the 7900 only supports DirectX9 and benchmarks like Final Fantasy 14 Benchmark will not run.

I love my Athlon 64x2 builds. My ECS GeForce 6100SM-M2 will be turning 10 years old this year. That thing had an Sempron 3800+ , Sempron X2 2300, Athlon 64x2 3800+, 64x2 5400+, and finally with a 6000+. AM2 has to be my favorite processor series despite all the issues with heat from the GeForce chipsets (the 6100 and 6150). I hate BGA, the flexing from the heat, most certainly killed OEM boards. Countless dumpster PC finds were the MB was dead but everything else worked! My favorite was an ECS KA3 MVP Extreme that i managed to get for like 20 bucks and took a dive into Crossfired Palit Radeon HD4850s, multiple BIOS chips, RAID, on-board Optical out, Dolby Digital, and 4GB of RAM. The thing had 2 SATA and 2 IDE Controllers but damn if those chipset didn't get hot! they scorched a wire or two. The thing could to 60FPS no problem in 2013's Tomb Raider. had to get a EVGA 700 Bronze, and that PSU is still working strong

I am still using AM2 SLI nForce motherboard as my MAIN COMPUTER!!! I have Phenom II X4 and GTX1070. In past 10 years progress in CPUs has been so slow and AM2 -> AM2+ -> AM3 socket comparability so great, that I literally could not be bothered to upgrade.

at least 60W more than similar performance Core2 E6700 :( 2006-7 was a time AMD lost the reason to exist for 10 years :( than Jim Keller for Zen, we have competition again in cpu market

Welcome back WaybackTECH! Ricer build is the perfect name for old parts in a new case. I like that term, more than reverse sleeper. A nice, capable machine for the era. Vista was such a turd though. I have a dedicated year 2007 machine that runs vista. Even after it's tweaked, it's a little hitchy at times. That said, Win7 felt like Vista SP2....and a bit of a rip off. Win7 felt like they could have just updated Vista.

That chassis is delightfully garish, it suits the board and everything here though. These chips arrived 'after my time' as it were and by the time they hit shelves I'd stopped paying much attention anymore, so it's good to see a glimpse of what I missed. Water cooling probably wouldn't go amiss as it appears even the cheap kits are quite good now, but it never hurts to have total paranoia where cooling is concerned.

I bought a couple cooler master AIO water coolers for real cheap intending on using them for the X2 and the Pentium D, but they might end up cooling my Xeon's as I notice they get quite hot under rendering workloads and I think I could get more speed out of the system with better cooling as it never get's to the turbo speed with the current air coolers I have now.

Taking a chance pays off sometimes. I got a perfectly-good Socket AM3 board for $2 because it had a broken fan mount. The fan mount was about $5.

Nice system you got there! I still have my socket AM2 system today but with a much lower spec CPU: 1. Athlon 64 X2 4400 which produces much less heat because it has a 89wTDP! 2. Abit AN9 32X motherboard (the regular version not the Fatality version which cost more money for more bling and more noise because of the 2 extra fans!) 3. 8 GB of RAM which really helps with Vista! 4. geforce 7950gt which was OK back in 2006 5. 500gb WD which is really slow compared to modern HDD! 5. and of course Vista :) ! It runs just fine even today; maybe a SSD would be a nice upgrade!

Nothing your Abit motherboard can't fix. Just crank up the speeds...

I still use a 4400+ with Windows 7 as one of my service pc's at work. Been humming along for the last 7 years or so. Good chips.

i have a lot of this athlon 64 x2 hardware lying around here including an x2 6000+ that gets extremely hot for some reason, even with a massive cooler.

Looks great! Are you worried about getting online with Vista, since Microsoft no longer supports it?

Where can I get the "bomberman" thing you showed in the video? That's really cool. Great video btw, I've always wanted to build an AMD machine, haven't found the right parts yet. /:

www.pouet.net just search for bombman. This site is a bit tricky to navigate, but there are a ton of demo's going back to the 80's even.

if the heat output strains an aftermarket air cooler, I wonder how loud the little stock cooler back in 2005 had to run

I would have tried win 7. Vista's known to eat all your ram. Nice demoscene.

I use Windows 7 as a modern system and have zero interest in running it on this. It is also well known how to tweak vista to not eat ram. Works very well too.
