Benchmarking the AMD Radeon Vega 56 graphics card against 13 popular and recent games on an average gaming PC.
After months or even years of having its value pumped up by its Ethereum profitability rating, the AMD Radeon Vega series of GPUs is finally dropping in price to pre-Scalper Pandemic levels. This means that, for the first time in my channel’s history, the Vega 56 is priced at £200 or less on the used market, putting it into direct competition with the ~£160 GTX 1070 and £180 RX 6500 XT. Does this make it a good buy in 2022, or will even its legendary overclocking and undervolting headroom still not be enough to help it compete in modern games?

You can enable Resizable Bar on VEGA 56 through a registry hack. AMD doesn't officially support this, but the option is there (Linux enables this by default) so you might wanna try that out as well. Resizable Bar shows gains when you're CPU limited, that's why in game benchmarks won't showcase this.

Enjoyed my time with a Nitro+ Vega 64 I used to own - despite mine not doing very well in the silicon lottery and drawing a ton of power (340w) to run at 1600/980 on core/hbm at 110mV . AMD had to sell as many Vegas as they could so they to overvolted them out the box so they would not have too many reject dies. The Vega 56 in particular can be turned into a monster card which can probably outrun a 1080 in quite a few modern dx12 games . HUB did a comparison with a stock Vega 64 and 1080 which mostly worked out for the Vega.

The gains with the UV/OC on Vega56 in the newer titles will likely be held back by other factors such as an aging architecture, in older titles that were optimised for it, it was more often than not around 20% increase in fps with my Strix card.

In the meantime working on a deal to change from i3-2130 to i7-2600 so an upgrade to Vega 56 for cheap makes some sense. @IcebergTech
@IcebergTech Год назад
I've never tested the 6650 XT, or even the 6600 XT, so I'm afraid I don't know for definite. I feel like the 6650 XT will have a noticeable advantage, especially in newer titles, and of course it will draw less power. On the other hand, the non-XT 6700 is on Newegg for $320 and is probably worth the extra $10! Unfortunately I think it's now a bad time to sell a Vega 56 as there are no miners are out there offering $$$ for that series of cards any more, so you'll probably take a $130-150 loss if you choose to sell. I'd only suggest upgrading if you feel like your current GPU is holding you back.

@@MartuDaArtist We can already dial in 945 MHz (the Vega64 stock frequency) for the Samsung HBM2 without using the increased voltage offered by the 64 BIOS - an 18% OC. That equates to +4.5% in Alien: Isolation or +1% in Halo: Infinite. I haven't tested enough games, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the bottleneck having shifted from memory bandwidth to shader count/speed over the last 5 years for RX Vega anyways, making the BIOS flash look questionable.

I bought an Acer Predator Helios 500 with (replaceable) Ryzen 2700 and (soldered to the motherboard) Vega 56 . I still have it and use it as my main machine for content creation and occasional gaming. Every modern game I threw at it, the V56 handled nicely and continues to do so, despite being TDP limited to 120W (but even though its lower clocked and operates on the lower voltage vs the actual TDP unlocked version on desktop, it only loses about 5-10% performance overall). Two things nag me about this machine: 1. Lack of BIOS updates (latest AGESA) from Acer which prevents me from replacing Ryzen 2700 with Zen 3 (otherwise, I'd stick a 5950x inside it, run it in ECO mode and call it a day). 2. Lack of pro software support for offloading compute tasks onto the Vega 56 (most of the pro software is limited to CUDA and OptiX, which of course do not work on AMD because those are Nvidia exclusive features) - CUDA and OptiX really need to be replaced with Vulkan so that I could actually make full use of my hw - but if I could just put 5950x inside my machine, that alone would give me a massive boost in overall productivity and gaming (and the upgraded BIOS may have also fixed the RAM being limited to specific speeds when certain slots are used).

I had the Red Devil Vega 56, it was better than stock Vega 64 with the undervolt and overclock. Don't ask me the settings it's been too long. Absolute unit of a card though, with 3 BIOS selectable by switch. That way you could flash a 64 bios, and if it doesn't workout you still have 2 others, hence no worries about bricking it. On your bad game play: You are actually playing the games to test them. Instead of relying on canned benchmarks and 25-60 second of walking or running somewhere early in the games and calling that a pass. Like many big channels do. Scientific methodology and repeatability are fine for a baseline, but only the chaos of gameplay tells the whole story. I don't care if you get good or not, it is outstanding for testing regardless. On the stock footage: Don't mind it at all. It gives it that polished professional look and extends the run time a little. Lastly: I really enjoyed this look back at my old love; the Vega. But I agree with others, likely to have been heavily mined on. And my understanding is it wears out the HBM2. I'd only buy if super cheap or from a seller I know and trust.

Picked up a Vega 56 (Powercolor Red Devil) recently to mess around with. I got a good price on it, and the thing came with all the packaging and was in immaculate shape. But I also have a GTX 1070 in an old workstation (PNY XLR8), so I am able to compare these two cards. In gaming, Vega wins by a good amount, especially with how I have it tuned. Sure it consumes upwards of 235 watts while in use, but if you don't care about the power efficiency aspect, Vega performs. So Vega performs better... In gaming. Tasks outside of gaming get more mixed. Obviously if you're doing workloads that are CUDA accelerated, then forget about Vega (unless you're willing to get ROCM working on Linux or WSL). Personally I found that the media encoder on Vega isn't great. I ran a test where I converted several videos to a different format, and the processing frame rate was more than double on the 1070 compared to Vega. I have heard that Vega cards are good production cards (probably because of HBM2 and the way GCN is set up). I haven't seen that yet, but it doesn't mean that it's not there. Drivers are fine. I like AMD Adrenaline. I don't like how it would sometimes reset my tuning settings to default. The only driver issues I have found are display driver crashes, but this only happens when I'm tuning and benchmarking the card (situations of instability). I know AMD gets a lot of ridicule for their drivers (and a lot of it is deserved. I dealt with a lot of their old stuff and got wacky results. I particularly don't like Catalyst) but Vega performs fine there, though I think it is slightly less stable than my RX 580. Overall, fun card to mess around with and a good performer, considering you get the right partner model. Sapphire and Powercolor tend to be the best for Vegas (not the reference models), Gigabyte tends to be the worst.

Hello all, I have an rx 5500xt 8gb at the moment. I was wondering if a vega 56 is a worthwhile upgrade. I bought my 5500xt for £92 on ebay and can sell it dor a voucher to a company called CEX for £105! They sell the vega 56 for £125 so if I sold my current one I can get a vega 56 with a 24 month warranty for £20! Surely that's better right?
@IcebergTech
@IcebergTech Год назад
I like the Vega 56 a lot, especially for those who like to play with undervolting and overclocking, and it can be quite a lot better performing than a 5500 XT - between 20% and 50% faster, depending on the game. However, it's worth pointing out WHY the Vega 56 is so cheap. I think it's highly likely that any card you pick up will have been used for mining during at least one of the last two or three crypto booms, and so they might not have a long life ahead of them. I think your plan of buying from CEX makes sense given their 2-year warranty, but you should keep a hold of your receipt 'cos there's a strong chance you'll need it!

Vega56 was amazing. It was launched with a rather high price tag, but if you used the card for compute and not just for gaming, then it was SUPER good value. AMD adjusted the price as always to fall into the "better value than Nvidia" class, and as the months and years went on, Vega56 and Vega64 both drew level, beat, and finally eclipsed their relative Nvidia competitor cards. It didn't help Vega's plight that Linus threw absolute shit at the card, as he did with Fury-X, while he was still suckling the Nvidia teat and very much on their payroll. That, along with the usualy techpress silence influenced by Nvidias golden envelopes, threw a spanner in the works for Vega. I managed to grab a pair of Vega64's during Black Friday 2019, when I was heavily searching for a 5700XT. The price was insane, £209 each for brand new Sapphire Nitro cards, totalling less than a single 5700XT I had been looking at. One for me and one for my daughters machine. Still got mine to this day, but hers was replaced with an RX560 because all she really plays is CatQuest, BroForce, Stardew Valley etc.
