According to the US Department of Agriculture, more than 1 in 10 US households are food insecure. Other data shows that 1 in 8 Americans experience food insecurity. The problem was made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation which soared to a 40-year high of 8.5% in March.

*I use to live in Memphis TN where I worked a decent job. I was laid off. I had a mortgage, car note and other bills. I signed up for unemployment to help me until I found another job. The maximum unemployment at the time in Tennessee, regardless of your previous salary, was around $275.00 a week. That could barely cover my mortgage and I had utilities and insurance and gas cost and phone bill etc. So I went to try and get food stamps to help me pay for food. I was told that I made $.05 cents too much to get food stamps. Also, the way the Republicans have done the rules around stamps in TN (because they are ideologically opposed to them) was to make it impossible to get them unless you were eating dirt. My mother sent money to help me cover my mortgage one month and they put that down as 'income'. If you borrowed $20.00 from a friend they classified that as 'income'. If money came from anywhere it was all classified as 'income'. Even if money didn't come and someone let you sleep on their couch the Republicans would consider the fair market rent for a place on the couch and consider it 'income'. So I could not get any aid. I had no food in my home and the strange thing is before that happened to me I knew several people in Memphis who were struggling with food insecurity. I never thought it would happen to me. I then went to a food bank. I was told I would be given a jar of peanut butter, 1 small can of tuna, one box of pasta, and a few packages of crackers and that was for the entire month. Let me repeat that. 1 small can of tuna, a few packs of crackers, a jar of peanut peanut butter and 1 box of pasta. There was no way I could stretch that a month. So I went without eating. There IS food insecurity. Not only did I see it in Memphis tn. I saw it in Dallas tx too. People who were laid off and they had no food. None. Not a single egg to eat. The food banks in Texas have more money and can give out larger food amounts but it still isn't enough to feed a family.*

Is "food insecurity" just the new PC way to say homeless bums?
