Updates on this (writing to publication was too slow to keep up): - Benny Gantz has now resigned from Israel's War Cabinet. -The UN Security Council has endorsed the peace proposal Biden outlined, with 14 yes votes and an abstention by Russia. Thank you.

There's a script error at 17:30 I think. From the context it was palestinian statehood that was recognized by Spain, Norway and Ireland (and then Slovenia), not Israeli statehood as Simon says in the Video. :)

Nobody cares what the UN thinks…not the USA, not the UK 🇬🇧 (where I’m from), not Iran or China. We all ignore them which as a whole is clearly correct…they have no power and no authority. They are inconsistent and pathetic. As for this “plan”…if you think about it, it can be outlined as the following; ‘Everybody stop and go back to how it was before’. Great plan…what a prick

Who's we? I don't think anyone wants the US to be involved in the rebuilding of Gaza other than US military contractors, of course. Do you realize that it was Hamas that rebuilt Gaza after every one of Israel's bombing campaigns in Gaza (or as Israel likes to call it, "mowing of the lawn") since 2006? In fact, due to Israel's illegal 17-year siege on Gaza that prevents the entry of most construction supplies such as cement, pipes, steel, etc., in addition to essential survival goods into the territory, Hamas and their tunnels have been essential in facilitating the reconstruction of Gaza's infrastructure since the early 2010s.

This is a deal made by a politician that wants to look like a leader but all he is doing is providing the perception of a solution without addressing any of the key issues in the conflict. He wants a solution that everyone can be happy with but that is never true of real solutions. The problem is, Israel wants Hamas ended as a military entity and Hamas wants the opposite and the deal addresses neither. Even though it says that its goal is an end to hostilities, It is just an attempt to go back to the status quo which means endless hostilities.

hamas is simply the latest evolution of civilian hate for the atrocities committed by israel for generations. Israel is using whatever flexible policy looks wisest at the time, to justify the slow erosion of palestine (or fast in the last year). Israel doesn't want peace, which is why netanyahu fostered the growth of hamas. This myth is honestly bonkers to me. Israel has been occupying and colonizing Gaza and the West Bank for 70+ years. All the while, they've continuously passed legislation that disenfranchises Palestinians to the point where Google Maps stopped considering it a country (very quietly) back in 2011 - and no one batted an eye. The average age of Palestinians is somewhere in the low 20s. They literally have not been alive long enough to be thinking of a long-term "strategy" like that. Oct 7th was strictly a reactionary attack. The only people who were looking for it to happen was Netenyoohoo's government, because they thought forcing Palestinians to violence would give them an excuse for ethnic cleansing. They didn't expect the global population to push back against them as it has.

It's funny how people still continue to think an external force like the US, Great Britain, or the EU is going to make the Middle East peaceful, it's not. It has to be done internally, the people, politicians, and generals from each Middle Eastern country have to want peace in order for it to work and even then it won't be easy. This isn't like the United States during the Civil War where it's just one country against itself, it's several nations with several different views on life and how it should be lived. Middle Eastern countries have such complex relationships with each other it's hard to see anyone truly settle down and stop fighting. Though that doesn't mean we should stop advocating altogether, but understand it will take time, ALOT of time and our current and future generations need to be able to stay on a single path and not diverge for the sake of whatever it is they're feeling at that moment in time.

To be fair, an unstable Middleeast does seem to have been online with how it was carved up and power structured post WW1. While anti-semitism and anger towards Israel's treatment of the Palestinian doesn't help, like you point out there are so many competing and often diametrically opposed systems. You have monarchys, you have a theocracy that wants to spread it's views and tolerance monarchies. You have ethnic tribal groups that want land they claim is theirs and a number of dictatorships. You have one or 2 areas where they want their past empires back. And you have numerous groups pissed that the West has been playing king maker for it's benefit for over a century. It could stabilize. But given how Europe and Asia seem to be destabilizing, that seems even less likely.

This is exactly what they had multiple times and has always been breached by Hamas once they had enough rockets back up. So absolutely no sense. No israeli gouvernment could agree to this. Interesting how Israel always concocts a reason for why Hamas is at fault for why it keeps committing massacres of civilians AFTER they get massive backlash about a massacre they've committed and how they never seem to provide even the flimsiest of evidence to corroborate their story. There's literally no way to bomb a field crammed with thousands of tents, each housing one or more families, without causing a mass casualty event. And a bomb doesn't need to hitting a munitions stash for it to set fire to tents built out of scraps of plastic and fabric...you know because bombs explode and cause fires and tents made of scraps of plastic and fabric tend to be highly flammable...

@@jasonssavitt5297The stated goal (that is, official policy position) of Hamas is the elimination of the state of Israel. Does that justify what Israel is doing NOW? No, I don't believe so. But it is still important to keep in mind that Hamas would do the same thing if they were capable of it. Go back 20-ish years to Camp David and see what was on offer then. You'll have to see what several different sources say happened, because there is no official record. Wikipedia summarizes it. IMO it's clear enough that Arafat was offered WAY more than they could ever hope to get now. Not even the same universe. The brute fact is that Israel (under different leadership, because it's pointless even talking about what Bibi is willing to offer, as he is already providing it) is not just gonna be like "Sure, just take it all! We don't need this, anyway. We thought about it, and we're just gonna stand down. Take whatever you want, no hard feelings." Whatever one's opinion is, in this world, that is not a thing. I also feel pretty confident that the current Israeli government does not care much that they have increased Hamas's numbers, and probably expected that to happen. That doesn't mean that they believe it will remain that way! What Israel is doing RIGHT NOW is beyond the pale. But Hamas would do the same thing if they could, and, in that scenario, I'd be saying the same thing about Hamas. It is plain as day based on the history that, were Israel not armed to the teeth, they would no longer exist.

The violations of Palestinians' right to self-determination would continue, the de facto control by Israeli nationalists would persist, and the conditions of resentment caused by Israel would reignite extremism and lead to events similar to those on October 7. This is why I love this channel so much, Simon and his team is always independent, rarely taking sides on anything politics wise. He just gives us the facts and what is known, I respect him so much for all the time and work he puts into his videos. (Mini rant) The problem with American is now we have two sides that would rather go at a propaganda war with each other instead of doing what's right or what's good for the people. Even when there is something that would actually be good for its people that one side wants to pass the other will spread lies about it. I just wish American people would do their own research on topics and facts but there is a good majority that just take what their party says as facts without actually looking into it to see if they are facts. (Rant over)

You're joking, right? I agree that people don't bother to look into issues and often regurgitate their preferred party's talking points instead and that when it comes to US domestic politics, Simon's videos are fairly evenhanded. However, on topics of geopolitics, Simon's videos are anything but unbiased. Nearly all his videos regarding geopolitics in the global south, with very few exceptions, have an extreme Western/Global North bias. His videos addressing events in West Asia (Middle East) are particularly egregious and this one is no exception.

What Hamas did was outright unforgivable. What Israel has done in it's occupation of the Gaza strip and other parts of the west bank is equally unacceptable. They both want something but are so entrenched in their resolve and ideas that neither can see the light. Palestine has a right to exist. Israel has a right to exist also, but both being this pigheaded is not the way to solve it. I don't pretend to understand the finer points as I don't but what I see is a fight between 2 people. Neither one wants to give up, one wants to bring it's friends into the fight sneakily, the other has big brother behind it passing on tips and advice. Both hope to gain the upper hand, only it's innocent people on both sides that are suffering. Israel should withdraw all forces from all occupied territories, at the same time Hamas and other related organisations must stop attacking Israel and provoking a response, and even further Iran needs to be told to stop interfering, possibly under the threat of complete annihilation or being tentatively accepted by the rest of the world as a emerging nation and praised as such.The U.S should withhold arms shipments and potential aid if Israel doesn't keep to it's word too. Like each other or don't, everyone has a right to exist, live and let live, the world has bigger problems to solve. Hardliners on all sides won't like it, but tough shit, there's more at stake than their re-election, favouritism, or even religious pride. Let's hope bigger minds prevail???🤞🙏

I'm not sure you meant to say "stable conflicts," but that is actually correct. The US needs stable demand for its weapons and thus will make sure there are conflicts that generate that demand. But you're a bit off on "the back bone of prosperity world wide" part. "Stable markets" are the backbone of prosperity for the 0.1% of mostly Americans who own and profit from the economic gains of multinational corporations. The rest of the world, whether in the US or elsewhere, is almost always materially harmed by the US playing world cop.
@cowmath77

@@ayantuinthenow couldn’t be more incorrect. It’s well documented that capitalism has elevated billions of people outside of America out of absolute poverty with steady supplies of medicine and significantly longer life expectancy. The US has overturned awful dictatorships in many countries, usually supported by locals with democratic ideals who push against religious fundamentalism. Why? Democracies are stable, open to trade, and grow reliably; wholly unlike authoritarian communist states. We took the entire country of Iran, the 3rd largest military at the time, in a WEEK. 1 week to cripple them completely. Thats the power of a completely volunteer democratic army. Anti-America is trendy because it’s the big dog, and because they don’t disappear you when you criticize the state. Every other large nation committed atrocities SIGNIFICANTLY worse than anything America as a whole has done, including the few hundred years of the slave trade.

Has anyone considered the possibility that constant intervention in Middle East business is exactly why the Middle East enters turmoil? What did Israel's creation do besides create instability in the region? What did the Iraq war achieve besides instability? What did Libya invasion do besides instability? What did Syria intervention do besides instability? What did the Afghanistan war achieve? Isn't the West/Europe imposing its demands on the Middle East the root cause of instability? Can states or counties achieve anything if the federal government constantly tells it what to do and how to do it? Or if the federal government prevents them from doing what they want to do? And what if the federal government decided to invade them every now and then? Could they grow and prosper or will they fall into instability?
