True story: a few years ago, ANOTHER dead whale washed up and people were all calling the local authorities to know when it would be blown up. When the authorities said they were, in fact, NOT going to blow this whale up, callers started getting MAD...

Oregonian here with extra spicy info about the car that was involved in the incident. It was a brand new car, bought off the lot that day for the weekend "Whale of a deal" sale going on at the car lot (I'm not joking that was the actual sale name) and the government did reimburse the guy for the damages to his car. So happy, but also oddly timed event. As an Oregonian, this is the proudest moment in recent Oregon history that the majority of us hold with pride. There is even a monument at the Florence beach commemorating this event, and whenever a whale is beached in Oregon we all make the same jokes/comments on the new articles: Get the dynamite because I feel like time traveling to the 1970's

Public service announcement: you don't use oil on the Mark-19. You do not use CLP. You use the authorized graphite lubricant. Failure to use the proper lubricant can result in the Mark-19 catching fire. I believe Mike Burnfire has a gun rant about that. As an Army small arms repairman, he could fix most mechanical issues. Fire is non-repairable. And the destruction of a weapons system that expensive will ruin careers.

Also another reason NOT to burn this is the fact that fire would have burned for quite some time, whale oil used to be used as lamp oil back in the day when whaling was still a major thing around the world and they got that oil from the blubber of whales, it also used to be made into margarine and used in making soap...so yeah, I wouldn't have advised just burning the carcass either.

I remember playing Baldur's Gate 1 on the core rules, and getting exploded by a random hobgoblin or gnoll lucky critical hit and realizing I couldn't drag my party member's carcass to a priest to be raised- or joined Papa Bhaal. Regardless the game was loaded cause fuck that bullshit.

In a dnd 3.5/d20 modern crossover game im in. I used c4 to kill a space dragon. While it is p for plenty. Shape charges makes things easier.

Unless someone made another attempt on a different carcass, the tnt didn't even "delete" the whale. Most of it was still there (just hollowed out) and had to be cleaned up the hard way.

As a guy who works in the food industry..... let them take the crabs. They don't know what to do with em, there not gonna be washed right, cooked right or be not actively toxic. Yes Oregon Department of Transit (ODOT) owned the beaches no one could have private beaches in Oregon since it was all state road. I grew up knowing this story by heart.

@@KipReacts The reason its endured is you can take your sand rig out and drive or walk anywhere you want so why mess that up. I am sure for most of us in Oregon we are happy to let ODOT run the beaches. People have tried to change it for hotels so they can own parts of the beach and shut people out.

For further context, it's actually not unusual to use explosives on whale carcasses...but usually *after* they've been towed back out to sea. In this case the explosives engineer involved wasn't accustomed to this particular work and the sand shifted beneath the explosives, redirecting the energy upwards instead of towards the sea as planned, resulting in the massive scattering of raining flesh.

I legit think god had a massive issue with the owner of the car and sent a whale to rot just for him. Why? The dude was1/4 MILES away, in a completely empty, barring his, car and the ONE thing that chunk landed on was his car. If that doesn't indicate the universe isn't your biggest fan, not sure what would!
