In the early 70's I was a weapons mechanic in the Air Force. These were mounted in the nose of A37's. I always wanted to take one of these home. They were very simple and easy to work on.

I sware every time i learn about an US weapon it's like "this weapon is several decades old and it's on its 85th variation, but it's still better than anything our enemies have, we have three million of them and five billion rounds of ammunition for it. It's planed replacement will be ready in 3050."

Did any of you attend the Houston Astrohall gun shows between 1987 and 1992? There was a Class III dealer who had a custom mount that held THREE MINIGUNS with one fire control system! It was quite remarkable. Only seven transferable Miniguns are on the books, and this guy had three of them. Interestingly, my friend sold one of those registered Miniguns for $50,000 at the time. The top Minigun had a different barrel group than the bottom two, but I'm not sure if that was for regulation purposes or simply what he could acquire. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to shoot it, but the concept was truly impressive. Back then, the setup was priced at $250,000, which would be considered a steal in today's market. However, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. Those were the days when you had to rely on someone's word without being able to fact-check easily. Class 3 firearms were a wild and innovative frontier, resulting in some truly remarkable creations. Looking back, it's a nostalgic and cherished memory. The guy mentioned that the Minigun had three speeds, approximately 1800, 3000, and 4800 rounds per minute. It was a different time. If you weren't alive then, it's hard to imagine the reliance we had on someone's word. Anyway, firing nearly 15,000 rounds per minute with a single trigger is bound to put a smile on the face of any red-blooded American! Thank you for joining me on this trip down memory lane. I apologize for any errors caused by my exhaustion. Best!

fire fights are so bizarre even when you think you’re winning you’re not sure… But I can promise you when someone opens up with a 50 you know you’re winning and when someone opens up with a mini gun or you get an AC 130 gunship or warthog doing its thing above you there ain’t no doubt about it..

😁I hadn’t seen some of this Dillon Aero footage I took in years. We usually shot 100% tracer, specially at sunset. The MD500F was capable of 6000 rounds a minute (dual M134s). A challenge is the CG of the 500 changing as the weapons are fired and ammo weight disappears rapidly. The Dillon’s were always great people to film with. 👍

Does anyone know if the Army (or any branch) saves the brass from these guns? I noticed that some had 'hoses' coming off the weapons and some did not. Are the hoses just to direct the spent ammo to fall out of the aircraft or are they collected and reused?
@troywalker8078
@troywalker8078 11 месяцев назад
It looked, to me, that the hoses just directed the spent casings away from the aircraft. Soooo much wasted brass.....
@ReggieMarshale
@ReggieMarshale 11 месяцев назад
It’s probably not worth it for the US Army to save the spent casings. Think about it; sure would might save some brass, but the effort to install catching pouch/boxes (which takes up precious space), and hauling them back to the facility would outweigh the benefits. It still depends on the situations, however. In my time in the Thai Army, we were instructed to keep the casing spent in the range. This is because our supply line is much shorter so it doesn’t make a lot of logistical burden (and also saves a lot money on brass). That’s why some miniguns in the video have the catch and some not, as their region dictate if it’s viable to save the casing or not

We had pairs of these mounted on pylons on our UH-!C Huey gunships. They were aimed and fired by the co-pilot. They were limited to 3 second bursts, and then you had to release the trigger to fire again. Each gun fired 2,400 rds. per min. Not my favorite weapon, as they were prone to jamming. I preferred to fly our ships that had the 40mm belt fed grenade launcher mounted on the nose.
@chinook366
@chinook366 11 месяцев назад
Used them on UH1-H aka Huey II, Dillon fixed the jamming issue and reworked the GCU, they simplified the feeder/delinker and it only had one button for timing as opposed to the old one and the GCU limited the rate of fire to 3000 rounds per minute. Only failures i had was due to faulty ammo (foreign made) could only use U.S. made for combat because it didn't fail.

(2:22) I would assume groved barrel is a no, no: with that kind of G force; & tip must slightly be more inset, for merging point to be accurate. = better 6 shots at once, likely, but slower rate of spring hammerings. 😎😎😬😬((7:06)) glow is the G force trying to take a new course./!\ Lasor temp test the mm, until highest friction point: then star regulating it down to get your lengths.?.. 🤔🤔🤞🤞Use carrier bearing like a long drive shaft: to shell in an tractors heat shield, for stability = Hass brown potato, holes will have to work on the shield as fins of a turbine. = Likely heavier then the tank version, for 1st prototype. = No shell casing and dual gears will pitch them faster, ((if you get the combo right)).
