My grandfather served on the USS North Carolina during Guadal after being sunk on the USS Lexington during Coral Sea. He always told me Guadal was the most intense and complex naval and landbased battles he ever participated in. Guadalcanal was the decisive battle in the pacific theater not Midway.

Your grandfather's service aboard the USS North Carolina during Guadalcanal, following the ordeal of the USS Lexington at Coral Sea, reflects an extraordinary commitment to duty and valor. His courage in the face of such intense battles is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who served during World War II. As a nation, we are deeply indebted to him and all those who fought alongside him, ensuring that future generations can live in freedom and peace. Their sacrifices will always be remembered and honored.

We agree. Midway was an important and vital, but one off battle. Gudalacanal was a six month long, often desperate grind by land, sea and air by both sides. In the end, the Japanese were defeated and had to withdraw in a Dunkirk like evacuation. And all this was repeated numerous times as Americans ground their way to a rendezvous with destiny with B29 attacks on Japan.

@@Wartalesuncharted Guadalcanal wouldn't have happened without Midway. Without reducing the number of carriers to rough parity at Midway, Nimitz would not have ventured that far in an offensive operation. Guadalcanal certainly was a crucial victory and in more doubt about the outcome than Midway, but their wasn't one crucial battle, even as the Japanese longed for it. It was a succession of attritional victories by the allied forces.

@@edwardadams9358I don’t disagree and of course Midway was an incredible victory but the IJN and Imperial Army were still very powerful post-Midway. Guadal, strategically provided the ability to operate within a critical path. Japan lost 30,000+ men with dozens of ships and over 500 aircraft. Post Solomons Japan was completely on their heels… if they even had feet.

My grandfather was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915 and I remember him telling me that he never saw soldiers as brave as the Anzac troops. When my grandfather recovered in Alexandria in Egypt he rejoined what was left of his battalion of the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers in Belgium just in time for the Battle of the Somme. He was wounded again, this time more seriously, and medically evacuated to a Military Hospital in Lockerbie in the Scottish Borders. He was medically discharged in November 1917.
