When Americans want social programs - Congress: "But how are we gonna pay for it?" When Israel and Saudi Arabia want more military funding - Congress: *Instantly pulls out checkbook.*
If there were universal childcare, there would be less childhood poverty, fewer gangs, and less crime...its almost like it would help all the people do better even if they didn't have children, or their children were grown past that age.
Exactly! The only way to reverse generational, poverty, and under educated/under socialized people is to give them a better chance from the very start. In the long run, it benefits the entire country and I'm so grateful that you see this.I hope more people see it as well.
Until there was profit to be had! Then, capitalist imperialism was like "this is mine now" and stole it from the public and tried to sell as much of it in the private sector instead.
It's all about balance. The income to cost of living is so out of whack we now have to work 2 or 3 jobs. And have kids? I honestly don't know how families are doing it these days.
@@codacreator6162 as a mother of grown kids, I know. I have had 2 jobs for the past 15 years and just scraping by now. Luckily my rent is low BC I've been here so long. I don't know what I'm going to do if my LL dies or sells the house.
It’s always a Republican! Kids do better in social situations. That is how it was done for hundreds of years. Extended families lived together on farms or close to each other.
Great explainer vid and decently persuasive seems to me, on a crucial topic. One nitpick to improve: somewhere midway through the math on years is off by a decade, and while maybe many (most?) won't notice this consciously, it kinda at least subconsciously throws off the whole credibility factor, when so much of the rest of this relies on clear, solid, numeric data to bolster the subpoints and overall purpose. It wasn't 40 years between WWII and Nixon. It was 30. Because yes it was 50 years ago almost when he vetoed the possible good permanent-ization of universal childcare, but 50+40 is 90, and no, WWII wasn't 90 years ago (especially not the penultimate year of it). [Edit to specify: this is at and just after 4:50 in the vid.] Fix that little flub, and you'd have a near perfect vid, I'd say! Also though, given the numeracy issues in general, and the whole basis of this topic being about improving so many factors of life, including educational outcomes achievement wise, it would probably be good to get 100% score on the grading for the vid itself, on that side of things (quant vs. qual, math vs. language, etc etc etc) that tends to weight so heavily in our still (overly) analytic-philosophy skewed, and capitalist/money-skewed, society and culture here in America, which of course is the entire crucial context of this vid's topic and meaningful aims to improve. Anyway, excellent job on the rest of it! And with that, this "sh#t sandwich" method of critique concludes ;-)
Just give us a guaranteed basic income and universal childcare we can divide what to do. That’s actual freedom. No young children in the first few years of life do not do better at a packed childcare center, with an exploited teacher, got it?
I LOVE The Classroom SUCH good production !! Thank you all for this work I wish we could run short films like this EVERYWHERE Population also needs to learn basic, critical, thinking… And simple, basic scientific method (to combat the medical misinformation!!!)
OMG...this sound like....like...Soci...I can't even say the word! It sounds like Socia...Somebody help me! No...wait. I can handle this on my own; I don't need any of you!
The tune from 2:00 to 2:08 is the US Civil War song "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!" It was used in the Irish patriotic song "God Save Ireland", which was briefly used as the Irish national anthem! :)
I am absolutely on your side. However, please do not say that it would make kids smarter. In addition to it not being true, those of us who didn't get good childcare really don't need to hear that. Thanks.
I think people might be more inclined to approve of these things if multiple states did them successfully first. If, say, California did universal healthcare the way people want for the entire federation, and it worked, maybe people in other states would be more likely to want it. As it is, people are moving OUT of California every year because policies like these do NOT work long term and it would be a disaster if we tried to do it permanently.
People are moving out of California because the economic liberals who control the state - no matter what their social opinion is, progressive or conservative - are screwing over everyone to keep Silicon Valley millionaires happy.
Just found out about this after watching a Porter video regarding her take on the subject. Nixon vetoed Universal Child Care? America had Universal Child Care?? I'm 50. Why am I finding this out now? And now I realize your video is 2 years old! Too often I see pundits and the press, although well meaning, assume too much. Educate us better. Give us the knowledge better. Especially now when families are working 2 -4 jobs just to make ends meet. Also, we need more women like Porter in Congress.
The WW2 era program came at a time when most Americans, by and large, trusted the Federal government, certainly more so than today. The average American today is much more untrusting of any Federal program, especially those dealing with the family. This coupled with media fueled fears of mass shootings, stranger danger, bullying, etc., parents would opt instead to have offspring spend as little time possible outside the realm of parental control. I'm sure many parents would love to have their children at home and spending as much time possible around them. This would minimize the corrupting effects of peer to peer socialization, thus resulting in a socially retarded child and ensuring a lack of descendants.
i think whether you are all set on pure capitalism or pure communism, we can all agree that any kid born with inequity amongst their peers is poison for the wellbeing for humanity. the sheer amount of human potential we have already squandered is tragic.
In 2003 in the city of Colton California offer childcare subsidized for their citizens the police department of the city why did the funding in the location for a police program juvenile outreach and police interaction. The city council brought the proposal. The parents of cooking myself came in for for that meeting and there was many of us. City council immediately postpone the meeting until 10 a.m. on a Weds. Only three parents showed up including myself we spoke and talked about the details of the benefits of childcare. The police resume spoke about the benefits of interacting with juveniles. The city council approved the proposal to give the police department the location in the funding. It was then and is now a storage facility for the Police
It does not sound like a utopian future. It sounds like a dystopian nightmare where parents pass their kids off to paid sitters instead of raising their own child. Womn leaving home and taking jobs was the problem... They became wage slaves too and worse that that, they ditched their role and demanded men respect them for it.
I don't think most women would like the government raising their kids (sounds a little Brave New Worldy) and instead if it didn't take two parents working full time jobs to survive and raise kids then a parent could stay with the children instead.
Tax payers money can't be used for child care. Instead tax cut should be given to parents so parents can decide whether to go for daycare or family care.
