I’ve flown over three million miles and have had my fair share of delayed flights. But this week, something happened that I’ve never experienced before … my family and I had to deplane three times, our American Airlines pilot refused an aircraft and … passengers applauded. Here's the full story johnnyjet.com/im-not-really-f...

Still would be safe, plane wouldn't just plummet to the ground just because of it. Biggest risk is an engine failure over open water with only 1 engine available = more work for the pilots.

@@kidlat9545 Not necesarily true. Most modern planes are designed to last 2-3 hours on a single engine. Of course, doesn't apply to jumbo jets, but they can still run on 3 most likely, even (closISH to) their weight limit.

As a Flight Attendant for Eastern, it happened to me once, when Lorenz was cutting way back on expenses. The captain who made the call to refuse the plane had to report to the Chief Pilots Office for a dressing down, and was suspended from work for two weeks. He told me later, he do it again rather than risking the lives of 250 people!! Makes me proud!
@boataxe4605

A two week suspension? That’s strange,I’m a professional boat captain and we have the right to cancel a voyage if we believe that the equipment or weather is dangerous, and we are legally protected from any retaliation by management. I’m surprised that professional airline pilots don’t have that same protection.

@@boataxe4605 agree ,! At the time this happened. Frank Lorenzo had taken over Eastern. Life was hellish. It was not long after this, that the pilots, flight attendants and machinists all went on a two year strike. I had been flying 18yrs at the time and it was a just and true strike. However we played right into his hands. Gave him time to sell off lg. chunks of the company. Sorry this was so long. And actually the stores is way longer. As a professional pilot, this is too much of a generalization. There is always a little something wrong on every plane, almost all the time. A decision always depends on all circumstances, in this case a long route over water. The decision he made therefore is 100 % correct. Still I’m confident the captain would have had no problem taking this plane from LAX to JFK.
@leew878
@leew878 2 месяца назад
@@GermanGuy007 I believe it was mentioned that there was an oil pressure or fuel pressure problem. It’s concerning to know that as a professional pilot that you would still move forward with a takeoff. You probably do very well at flying and have probably encountered situations that were less than ideal while in the air but this is a known issue that may turn out to be not that big of a deal while on the ground but could have turned into much more in the air. Hats off to this captain for making the decision he made and not risking the lives of the flight crew and all the passengers.

when I was a kid in the early 80s I'd fly to CA and Hawaii with my family two to three times a year from the NYC area. These flts were always on DC-10s and B747s. Even our trips to Orlando were on Eastern L1011s. Now everything is a narrow body regardless of route. Recently flew on AS ORD to ANC on a B737. Brutal!

We had this issue when I was taking off from London Heathrow heading to Atlanta, GA last month. Weather had been atrocious with high winds, causing delays while we were on the taxiway, but as we reached the #1 position and were spooling up to take off, a plane behind us said they thought they'd seen a tarp get sucked into our left engine. The readings on the engine were fine, but our pilot decided to take it back to maintenance for inspection. We spent another 2 hours with technicians looking through the engine and doing tests, so when we finally took off we were 5 hours behind schedule. We landed around midnight in Georgia so we all missed our connecting flights, but I didn't mind. I'll always prefer safety over expedience when it comes to flying. Thanks, Delta!

In one of my flights from Netherlands to Serbia (2,30h flight), right on the border or NL and Germany captain spoke, explaining that we need to turn back due to issues with some oil system and that they've decided it is best not to risk it. He was so confident and reasured people that everything will be ok. When we landed he said he will walk down the isle and answer any questions while we wait for the maintenance crew to finish. Since that day, KLM became my favorite operator. ♥ The only thing I regret not doing is troll my mom (who was already asleep and missed all of that) that we have arrived in Serbia. 🤣😂

He’s got my respect. While never being a pilot, I’ve driven semis and charter buses and been told the same thing. Oh, it will be alright and we will get it fixed later. But before their later came, an alternative later came and I ended up either sitting in a parking lot or the side of the road waiting for help. 30,000 feet or so in the air, pretty sure there isn’t going to be a place to pull over. Nothing in Hawaii I need to see that bad anyway.
