Americans, unlike Europeans, live in a bubble surrounded by more Americans... and then oceans. Being French and knowing something about Spain or Germany, is on par with being from Florida and knowing things about Texas or Georgia. Relevance dictates personal knowledge.
And most Western Europeans I’ve met have told me they know very little about Eastern Europe. People I meet from Southern African countries usually don’t have in depth knowledge about West African countries. Everyone lives in a bubble to some extent.

I've heard of it but I still pronounce it wrong. Because it sounds like they're going for "filet", the French word. But here, we don't use that word. We use "fillet", like a "chicken fillet" or a "fillet of fish". And it doesn't sound like "fil-A", it sounds like "fill it".

The US is pretty big. The interesting thing when our representative was talking was I was like that’s not all of us. You pretty much need two or three people from the United States in different places to get a more full view of the United States.
As a German, I am stunned to see two ladies who both are honest about firing stereotypes without getting disprespectful. That was both, very entertaining and extremely interesting to watch. Good job, please keep up with it.
There’s a difference between stupidity and ignorance, despite the fact that they usually go hand in hand. There’s a lot Americans aren’t taught about the world around us and because we’re so caught up in our own issues, many sadly don’t care. But to make a sweeping statement that “Americans are stupid” after we accomplished so much in the fields of science and industry is in and of itself a little ignorant.

Part of the issue is that the idea of a "well-rounded education" or liberal arts and humanities has passed out of relevance in the U.S. I say that without value judgement, really. The U.S. is competitive, and people with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) competence and expertise are making all of the money, it seems. So, really, generalized humanities topics are seen as pointless and unnecessary. Sure, these people are going to lose on quiz shows. But they stand to get the big house, car and boat down the line. Can you blame them if they don't know a Plantagenet from a pierogi?

That fact that she thinks the Constitutional right to bear arms is about self defense is why she doesn't understand how people can support it. The US Constitution does not grant people rights, it is supposed to prevent the government from infringing upon their innate rights, because the Founders knew that the biggest threat to liberty is the government itself. The first amendment is the same (and all others); it does not grant the right to free speech or religion, it prohibits the Congress from passing laws that curtail those freedoms.

Aussies also say sorry instead of excuse me if we bump into someone by accident. If someone said excuse me in that situation, I'd think, "Why, do you need to get past me?" We usually only say excuse me if we need someone to get out of our way or we're trying to get their attention.
In Ireland this is the same, but even to get someone's attention, we usually say "sorry" instead. Like if we were calling a waiter or a staff member somewhere to ask a question, we'd often say "Sorry, could I have a ___ please?" for example.
I’m American and I believe stupid people exist in every country including my own. But then one must ask how they define “stupid”. I have met people from different countries who weren’t fully literate in the native language and had little formal education. Typically anywhere in the world whenever people are poor they tend to have less access to and fewer resources to travel. Also there is a difference between don’t know and don’t care. I read at least 10 news websites a day and the tv in my office is usually tuned to a cable news network. But that is for work. I only have a passing personal interest in other countries’ politics and I don’t appreciate non-Americans trying to engage me in conversations about US politics which has happened a lot. I don’t ask non-Americans about their countries’ policies nor do I tell them my unsolicited opinions on what their countries do. Also I don’t really agree about the fast food thing but maybe it depends on where you live, your situation and your cultural background. I eat out a lot. I don’t eat fast food a lot. For one thing FF doesn’t tend to serve a lot of the foods we eat that require more preparation time like meat loaf, pot roast, ribs, jambalaya to name a few. I grew up eating Shepherds Pie. However, I don’t have children. I find that most people I know who have children tend to cook a lot. We have people in the country who are receiving government aid to buy food. Fast food restaurants don’t take food stamps. I highly doubt most people can afford to take two adults and four kids to McDonald’s or wherever every day. It’s the fact that we have so many people that these companies can do a lot of business but doesn’t mean everyone constantly goes.

@9:03 Shannon is not exaggerating one bit. Me, a Swede, in Miami in 2006. Going inside an elevator. A random American instantly "Hi, how're you doing" and seconds later "What do you do? [for a living]". I was shocked. That is unheard of in Sweden and northern Europe in general.
A similar story from San Diego. I was there for a business meeting and got on an elevator in a suit (I am East Coast). At the pool level, a guy gets on bare naked from the waist up, wearing a towel around his lower half. Smiling, he says, "Man that felt good. You should take a dip. It's so hot out." I assume he was wearing a bathing suit, but my East-Coast sensibility would have prevented me from getting on an elevator, dripping, in a business hotel. The key word for Americans is "informal." 5:33 -- Shannon described a fully automatic weapon ("a ton of bullets in a second"), not a semiautomatic. All that means is one squeeze of the trigger = one bullet. Fully automatic are extremely difficult to get and very heavily regulated since the 1980s. Also, look up "journalists try to buy g-- same day, unable to do so." You'll find any number of stories & videos along those lines. It's so disheartening when people literally don't know what the issues are or how the hardware functions, then tell the rest of the country how to think in their ignorance.
Not only are fully auto heavily regulated, in half the states they are out right banned. If you live in the half that still allows fully auto guns, you get scrutinized if you own property in one of the states that out right bans them. Good luck getting the permit to purchase them. On top of that you can only buy from a select group of fully auto weapons (has to be made prior to 1986), the quantity of which depletes every year due to wear and tear, which then drives the price up on the available fully auto firearms. For all intents and purposes it's impossible to own fully auto firearms. And yet the myth persists that they are "everywhere" and "easy to buy".
If there is one thing the average American could be accused of complete stupidity on, it's gun laws. So many lies out there as partisans try to shepherd the sheep away from their essential rights.
The "free country" one was weird. She saying that yes if you have a certain opinion people will put you in a certain category but that doesn't mean your freedoms are taken away. Some people make the mistake of wanting to do what they want with out any judgement or criticism. But just because someone criticizes you doesn't mean you're not free. You can say and do what you want but don't expect not to get a reaction.
He is correct. The vast majority of the whining. Is due to people getting criticized for their opinions. So many whine and pretend their freedom is being taken. It's ridiculous and it crosses political boundaries. Yes, some go too far. But those are usually called out by others. There are too many extremists on both sides of the political discourse. The right doesn't call it canceling. But at its core and it's practice they do the same things. Then act like victims ALL THE TIME. Same as the left. Both ignore plenty of actual victims routinely. Because it will disturb the particular narrative they want to push. People are so fos.

Also AR mean Armalite which is the company that made the gun designed for civilian use and doesn't mean Assualt Rifle. The term Assualt Weapon is stupid because literally anything can be used to assualt some like a hammer or knife, like the huge murder rate in the UK from knife attacks
It's far more likely that someone survives a knife attack than being shot. Every other first world nation's people grew up long ago and learned that unrestricted arming of private citizens is insane without a tangibly provable imminent need.

Most of the world has been at war with/declared independence from Britain at one time or another, the us is the only country with an unhealthy obsession with guns.
I just wanted to bring this up in connection with the semi-automatic gun mentioned, a semi-automatic gun in fact does not fire loads of bullets in a second, it's one bullet to one trigger pull. An automatic gun shoots loads of bullets but those are banned in the US.
@@Ailurophile1984 Were you my summer camp counselor? That would be wild. Anyway, you are focusing on the wrong aspect of the debate. Bump stocks exist. And even beyond that, the only major difference is a person's ability to pull a trigger repeatedly rather than hold it down. Not much.
She just meant that you could pull the trigger (and subsequently fire rounds) multiple times a second, whereas something like a bolt action rifle can only be fired once every two seconds or so.
Yes and they were weapons of war until WW2 probably after as well along side semi automatic fire arms and automatic firearms. The military has done studies and it shows that more bullets doesn’t equal more killing. The question was stupid. More people are killed by cars, food, and I’d be willing to bet things like medication. The idea that something should be banned or tightly controlled because it can be dangerous is silly.
Not an American here (Albertan/Canadian), but the reason for the right to bear arms is to prevent governments from eroding citizen's rights without their approval. It is even mentioned within the full clause of the second amendment.
That idea died when tanks and fighter jets rolled off the assembly lines. Do you really think a US militia made up of citizens with guns can hold off a well-trained Army with tanks, a Navy long range missiles, an Air force with highly advanced fighter jets and bombers, Marines who specialize in stealth combat, all of whom are led by generals with combat experience? If that's what you think, you've been watching too much Red Dawn
@@bradcofo Yes because the the government would be too concerned about collateral damage to use their full arsenal. Armed citizens vastly outweigh the military. @J.Ruseva I honestly don't remember being tested on the constitution. But based on how my school taught stuff, they teach you one thing, test you at the end of the week or so then completely move on to something else until the final at the end of the year where the whole thing is multiple choice
Yeah, I just got to comment on something, as no matter where you stand on the gun debate, people should make their arguments with truths. For example: semi-automatic weapons (which a large portion of handguns and rifles are in the U.S., btw) don’t spit out a thousands of bullets in a minute (that’s fully automatic). Semi-automatics are one trigger pull, one bullet. I’ve yet to see anyone who can pull a trigger anywhere near a thousand times in a minute. And you can only fire the number of rounds loaded in the magazine (NOT clip); I’ve never seen a magazine that holds thousands of rounds before-that would be too large to be practical. Now, you can argue that no one should even have THAT capacity, and you have your right to that belief. But please, use facts to convey those beliefs. And, no, I’m not a gun nut-I’ve never owned a firearm.
Most anti-gun people don't know shit about guns or the laws in place. They just repeat the fake garbage the left spews on CNN & other garbage news shows.
Dear Mare Cort, youtube is filled of videos showing people firing machine-guns as they drink a glass of water. Firing antitank rifles or rockets. Soft rules, no control. from Roma Italia
@@paolodiamante1884 This has nothing to do with my comment. Now, those videos you have mentioned: are they taken in the U.S.? Because if they are, maybe they should be reported to law enforcement because those with those types of weapons probably possess them illegally. You can’t purchase anti tank rifles or rockets in any gun store I’ve ever been in, and to purchase a “machine-gun” (I’m assuming you mean a fully automatic weapon) you must have s stringent background check that takes quite a while and is very, very expensive. As far as soft rules and no controls, that is not true. If you’d like to see facts about this, I’m happy to point out some RU-vid accounts that will give you these facts. Have a great day!
Was just thinking the same. The absurd part is that a lot of European countries are fine with people owning semi-autos for hunting/target shooting. America has issues for sure. But dishonest discussions is not the answer. Machine guns used in crimes are extremely rare in the US. While here in my home country (Sweden) they are used more commonly.
I was suprised that she had no idea why we have the 2nd amendment and why it's so important. The fact that people misuse their weapons is a different thing.

Those things, unlike firearms, have more than one use/function. A firearm's only function is to harm someone or something. Even in "defense", a firearm can only do so by harming someone or something. Many Americans do not find tha acceptable anymore.
Cars are designed to transport people. Alcohol is a by-product of a tasty drink. Piloting a plane (at least a commercial one) is meant for transportation. Firearms are meant for one thing only: to kill or at least injure. That puts firearms in a morally distinct category. I am not advocating banning them (they have a role under controlled circumstances), but every single person needs to view them clearly for what they are: instruments of violence. And every person who owns such a weapon needs to take the responsibility extremely seriously. By extension, every society worth the name has an interest in making sure that people do that. If you call that gun control, so be it. After all, many states have a "highway patrol" to make sure people drive responsibly, so why should firearms be exempt from regulation?
@@jwb52z9 Many Americans use firearms for hunting which serves the purpose of feeding their families. I'm sorry, but as a Canadian I take issue with the Brit's being labelled as constant apologizers. That's supposed to be our thing! In my home province there is even a law that protect our ability to apologize without admitting guilt, fault, or responsibility for an action. Look up the Apology Act of 2009.
Okay first off, semi automatic means 1 shot per trigger pull. Fully automatic means you can hold the trigger down and the firearm will continuously fire until you run out of bullets. Semi autos are legal while fully auto is regulated and cannot be purchased without filing the proper paperwork and signed off by the government. Ever state and even town and cities have specific firearms laws. The ability to own firearms is important to our way of life in America. People from other countries bash and judge America and the American people and yet, people from other countries, leave or escape their own country to live in America and mostly in California, New York or Florida (mostly in Miami).. most of the people living in America from other countries, aren’t always respectful living America after saying life is better, freer, better jobs, all that stuff but wave their own countries flag around. It’s just not people from central and South America who come here illegally, (breaking the law by not coming here the legal way, and still getting away with it for several decades), it’s most countries who come here and expect a lot and many don’t try to learn the English language. Also, it’s not the kids in school’s fault for the education they lack in, it’s how the government controls what kids learn in schools and teachers doing everything they can to help students pass to the next level up. There are some pretty smart kids and do very well, where they are ahead of other kids in school. A lot of parents are fed up with the American school system and taking their kids out of schools and home schooling their kids and those kids actually get a much better education to the point they’re ready for college by the time they’re sixteen years old, maybe even younger. Going to school is tough on all kids, one teacher per class and the teacher can’t teach each kid individually, that would take so much time per day. Even when you ask a college age kid questions about the history of the U.S., half will know the answer and half will take a wild guess and get it wrong. College students are more focused on their college major, study only for their college major and think outside of their major major goals. I hate when people go out there and record and ask students, what does a certain political question, what’s the Vice President name, just anything about the U.S., it’s edited to only show the people the people who get a question wrong. I have answered all the questions those people ask and I got them all right. I sat with my cousins who are in high school and college, I show them a video of a guy asking people questions to see how much they know. Those teens and people in their 20s, got the wrong answers, it’s edited because each one of my cousins, got every answer right! So that means I have very intelligent cousins or they really paid attention in classes and got very lucky to get good teachers. Also, I hate when they have people go out there and ask questions to anyone on national t.v. or made a video for social media about America, politics, math, and show the people they answered wrong, it’s just pretty much making America look even worse. It’s like those people who are Americans, make other Americans look bad, people hate us, look down on us but still, they will escape their country from all parts of the world, to live in America. I watch a video that was in downtown London, a British guy asked teenagers and people in their 20s.. even older people, questions about England, and to my shock, they also got the questions wrong about their own country, politics and math, even about the Queen (awhile before she passed away). The British people laughed in embarrassment that they got the questions wrong! It was shocking! But I want to know, what country on Earth is perfect? Ok, I’ll answer… Not one! And since social media came around, more and more people around the world, under thirty or twenty five, rely on social media, get the answers from social media, learn how to bully others and being brave behind their keyboard. They practically live off social media as if it’s their oxygen and brain.. yeah, there goes the worlds future! 😬😬😬

US Americans aren't 'stupid', generally speaking, but ignorant, yes. The excuse that 'the US is very big' is not a good one. Many people in other countries have good basic knowledge (geography, history, etc.) of most of the world, not to mention their own country.
A good amount of us Americans don't even know who our Vice President is. I know that Kamala is not on TV nearly as much as Biden, but come on! There's Google lol.
@@user-pd9ju5dk5s Yes, there are ignorant people in every country. However, the level of ignorance -- not knowing where one's own country is on the map, not knowing basic geography like Europe being a continent rather than a country, not being aware of basic geopolitics or historical events outside one's country, etc. -- and the demographics displaying such ignorance -- even city-dwelling, middle-class university graduates -- is unique to the US (amongst developed, Western nations).
@@joshuamotyl3219 hahaha ok. I'll just ignore all the impressively ignorant boomer and gen-x US Americans I've heard expound their wisdom. A great case study would be many inhabitants of Trumpistan.
For the alleged American. England is smaller than New England. When you add Scotland wales and Northern Ireland the UK barely beats it. Now find New England on a map. Now on guns: obviously you have never been out of a city. I would not go into the woods of Maine unarmed. Yes, limey, guns are dangerous - that is the point of a gun. where wasI? Oh, yeah, US is huuuuuge. I wonder if Alaskans should give up there right to defend themselves from fricke polar bears to satisfy a linguist from LA (or NYC) and a linguist from Bath?
America IS huge, is a whole CONTINENT🙃 full of countries, languages, cultures, etc etc, all plural cause you know, its not just ONE country (U.S) 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Most anti-gun people don't know shit about guns or the laws in place. They just repeat the fake garbage the left spews on CNN & other garbage news shows.
@@spk1121 That’s why I find it best to avoid conversations with people who give opinions when they don’t know what they are talking about. Ask questions or do some research beforehand.
She should have said alot of (not all) Americans are content at being ignorant about another cultures (this also includes the ones within the US itself) and figures that the world revolves around the US, which it does not....and yes I am a American myself so I know how ignorant some people are and they're happy to stay that way.
It is a very difficult reality for many Americans to accept that their country has many customs and traditions thanks to other countries and that in reality, the United States is a point of convergence of many cultures that coexist with each other. A simple example is the cowboys... for an average citizen of the United States, the cowboys were born in the United States and they are the maximum historical representation for the United States and something that many Americans believe with pride... but the reality is that the cowboys were originally born in Spain and their lifestyle was preserved in countries like the United States and Mexico... in deserted places for raising cattle and field work. Even with all this, another reality is that without the United States there would be so many things that would not exist today, since the United States has influenced both directly and indirectly in many events.
@@titanx7668 tbf cowboy culture is vastly different in the US than in Spain as it had influence and change by mostly black, native and mexican cowboys, what you said is true but also a lot of things that were not originally american and were brought to the USA by immigrants over time evolve and become distinctly American, like baseball or New York pizza which varies greatly from italian pizza
Bro she goes “Semi automatic weapon that shoots multiple bullets a second. “ If it’s semi automatic than it’s not a machine gun. You pull the trigger once and one bullet fires. Not multiple. Plus ARs are actually less dangerous than hand guns. She needs to do her research god that’s annoying.
As an American, I would say the average American isn't stupid, but poorly educated. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that if I gave the average woman a blank map of the world, they couldn't point out Saudi Arabia....or even Tennessee!
As a French, I am seeing how close we are to British people in the field of human interactions - yes, read again this revolutionary sentence and think twice about it, because I think it is usually really underestimated (old rivalry between bot nations, romance and german languages, and so forth...). We use "pardon" as they do for "sorry", and it is considered rude to directly jump into the conversation. Of course, like always, there are many differences between places, social groups and so on. But I discovered these last years how easy it was for me to understand the reactions of British people in my professional daily life.
This is exactly whats wrong people aren't educated about something but still try to educate others. A semi automatic weapon is not the same as a automatic weapon. Semi automatic means you have to pull the trigger to shoot. So its impossible to shoot several rounds a sec with a semi automatic weapon which also includes pistols. So that part just sounded misinformed and spreads more misinformation
5:32 Technology progresses. The rights listed are not given by the government. They are rights all people should already have regardless of government. Whether they use or not use those rights are up to them. That is a big part of having freedom. But no one has the right to tell others what rights they get to have and not have based on the actions of others. The right to have arms is not locked to musket technology at the time. If rights are locked to technology then the freedom of speech and freedom of the press would not include the Internet or television. Everything would have to be written on parchment with a quill pen and/or printed on a printing press. The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting. It is about staying protected. Also, semi-automatic weapons do not fire a ton of bullets in a second. Fully automatic weapons might do 10-20 rounds a second, but they are not sold to the general public.
American English has made many changes in the 300+ years apart from U.K. English. It became a bit rougher, and more to the point. Words have changed meaning, But when your country is a melting pot of almost every culture's changes are bound to happen.
I’m genuinely impressed with both of these young ladies, but Shannon especially for how accurate and fair she is in her responses and just now level headed and mature she sounds (both of them). She’s charming and authentic. A fantastic representation of the U.S.
I thought the UK was famous for having a lot of their celebrities acting in American films. I've had a shock with watching an American movie or show and finding out an actor I like wasn't American because I presumed they were since they were on an American show/movie.
@@christophermichaelclarence6003 It's just the fact that English has a bigger speaker base, and all Native English speakers have large populations when put together
I don't know of any semi-auto that can fire a ton of bullets in a second. I would put a card in there saying 'most Americans have no clue about guns'. : P Semi-auto means the action is automatic, not the firing.
I remember saying sorry in a bar in Manchester after someone bumped into me, later being told that someone was actually "pulling me" and my naiv self didn't realize it. 😂
Shannon makes the unfortunate mistake millions of Americans make, which is to form an opinion on the Second Amendment before understanding it. She admits to not understanding it and yet forms an opinion anyway. This is ignorance. Please comport yourself better by learning about it and THEN forming your opinion.
loved this!! can we have a Spain and Mexico, it's pretty much the Spanish version of this (one possibility at least, there are a lot of American Spanish speaking countries)
@@corymiller536 that's why I think it would be interesting... to keep comparing different cultures that have the same language, although surely there are different words and word usage between the two countries... kind of like UK and USA
