Airdate: May 30, 1964
From Hollywood...
Here the kids demonstrate the Slauson Shuffle, a line dance done at the beginning of the clip. The dance, named after Slauson Avenue in LA where it was invented (I assume), was most popular in Southern California from 1962-1964.
While the Slauson Shuffle wasn’t “the biggest dance of the year”, what would you say WAS the biggest dance move of 1964? The Frug, the Jerk, the Swim or something else?
This was Round Robin's only song to make it to the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #61 in a few weeks and is at #97 today. Robin appeared on Bandstand three times to sing and promote the song, but it wasn't enough for it to catch on across the country.
The #1 song on the Bandstand Top 10 board and on the Billboard Hot 100 chart today is "Love Me Do" by the Beatles. Unfortunately I can't show it due to its copyright (I tried to post it but it's a no-go)
Brought to you by @jthyme and yours truly.
Remember to kick that little foot...and thank you for watching!

I was 5 in '64 and my sister was 10 and I don't recall this dance at ALL ‼️ I remember doing the Twist and the Jerk 🤣🤣🤣

The Jerk was popular for a very short time as was the Twist made popular by Chubby Checker. I was 15 in 1964 and I danced soooo many dances that were popular for a very very short time.

Annah, In the early 70s while dancing with my wife now , i danced so bad that i thought she said i was doing the jerk but she was calling me a jerk lol.... and we all still do the twist today and my hips don't swivel as well...

@@lovevivaldi The Twist was popular for a long time 1960-64. The Jerk lasted about 2 years, from 1964-65.

Whenever I hear of Slauson it reminds me of Johnny Carson's Tea Time routine. His Art Fern would say"How do you get there? Let me tell you friends, how do you get there! You take the San Diego Freeway to the Ventura Freeway. You drive to the Slauson Cutoff, get out of your car, cut off your Slauson, get back in your car, then you drive six miles till you see the Giant Neon Vice-Squad Cop. Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and American Bandstand both classic television.

I remember the Art Fern routine, but, either you or Johnny Carson got it wrong. Slauson Avenue connects to the San Diego Freeway a few miles north of LAX. The Ventura Freeway parallels Slauson, but is around 15 miles north - where it does connect with the San Diego Freeway. 😉
@bradsense7431
@bradsense7431 Год назад
@@nuwavedave I could very well have it wrong but I just copied and pasted. I remember the routine but not the exact wording so I had to search it on google. Does that mean there is also no Giant Neon Vice-Squad Cop? 😁

The Slausen dance came and went, as most dances that are fads, like the Jerk etc. The Slausen was an East Coast fad.

I don’t remember this song at all nor as a big hit! I remember the “Twist “ during this time very well! We even had a dance class between classes in Junior High school and we all learned the “Twist “ ! I was a Los Angeles kid! Remember Chubby Checker and his song-dance the “Twist “!

This was the same episode that had the "Just Like Romeo and Juliet" Spotlight Dance. Andrew (Times Past Television) put together clips from NRRA featuring that dance and guest appearances by Nino and April, who did a high-energy version of Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose", and the late Don Grady, who performed his self-penned "A Broken Heart Knows Better:.

Slauson Shuffle named after Slauson Ave., Los Angeles, CA. At lunchtime, we were permitted to use our public school auditorium for dances sometimes. A nickel and we also got to do the Surfer Stomp!

No it's not. It comes from the Slausons, which was a club or street gang according to the police. They existed from the early 50s through the 60s.

I've not heard this for years, but it reminded me that I used to have a copy in my Northern Soul collection. I think it was on the Domain label, and it was definitely played at the legendary Wigan Casino.

I was 7 in '64, and not only was a fan of "The Twist" (Mr. Chubby Checker was robbed of his WELL-DESERVED place in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as he changed the way we danced with that song AND dance), but also "The Mashed Potato", which also boasted the song of the same name (currently being used in the Apple commercials). We still have the home videos of all us kids doing both at our large family get-togethers back then. Such fun, memorable times...

Hi Aaron, I just noticed you turned the comments off on the Action upload, if you didn't get a chance to see my comment, I said that the quality looks much better with the video being uploaded in 720p, so if it was a quality experiment, it worked. Keep up the awesome work and collaborations and thanks for bringing us these awesome rarities!

YCDTI PLEASE Omit D Clark from your videos. I would like to add them to my ABS Playlist but I don't like D Clark and would much prefer to not Hear or See him. ABS was Not His Show. It Belong to the Philadelphia School Kids that showed up Every Weekday to Dance. That is why Teenagers All Across America tuned in. Not for the Extremely Egotistical Clark. PS, I Know Kathy Young sang "A Thousand Stars on ABS. Is there some reason that particular episode isn't shown ? I would very much appreciate having it. Would appreciate it - Thank you, JaneLee - in Suburban Philadelphia 9/25/22
