Airdate: July 1, 1967
Some Sunshine Pop at the beginning of ”The Summer of Love”
“Sunday…..” was turned down by The Left Banke (”Walk Away Renee”) and for The Mamas & the Papas by their producer Lou Adler before being recorded by Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane and her “Gang“. It will be their first and biggest hit peaking at #9 last week and is at #16 today. The album Spanky mentions here, the self-titled “Spanky and Our Gang“, will be released in 1 month on August 1st.
Frank Vanderpuil danced on American Bandstand from 1965-1970. He and frequent dance partner Peggy Waggoner, seen together here at 2:19, were (and still are) fan favorites. He and Judy Michaud also won the ’67 Swing Dance Contest 3 months ago on April 1st. (for the millionth time, lol)
Other regulars dancing today are: Kathy Grimwalt (2:13), Don Sanuskar & Robin Morris (2:57), Leonard Smith & June Strode (3:32), Christy Snider (3:55) and Famous Hooks & Theodosia Dayton on the riser at 2:01.
(Today’s episode is courtesy of Don Sanuskar. Thank you Don!)

It is so moving to hear Frank's voice once again after sooooooo long and wonderful to see us back together post dance contest. Can't break up a good team...I loved Spanky & Our Gang!

@Peggy Names Peggy just wondering if you ever had the opportunity to visit Frank's resting place. If it were me, I guess I'd have to be in the right frame of mind to do so. I'm such a big baby, I'd sob at the funeral of someone I barely know. I guess I just feel very deeply the pain of others.....or I really am just a big baby. Hugs to ya Peggy!

Spanky and Our Gang, along with the Buckinghams, were to me, the most underrated groups of the 60's and pop music in general. Neither group was around very long, but what they put out was special.

What a fantastic video and conversation with the great Elaine Spanky Mac Farland. I saw her live in Atlantic City for the Happy Together Tour 1984 at the Tropicana Casino. When she got done singing some of her hit songs like Lazy day I went up to her and gave her a hug and told her how wonderful she and her group were and she was so delighted, and this is a true story!!!!!

"Sunshine Pop" is a genre name that was coined decades after the 60s. It was originally a name used on nostolgia compilation box sets then morphed into a genre label. The label decribes the sound, lyrics, and mood perfectly.

There is a second list from 6 to 10: California Dreamin, Happy Together, Walk Away Renee, I Say A Little Prayer and How can I Be Sure!!!!! How about those great songs !!!!!

I was a teenager in the sixties (b.1952) and used to go to a lot of dances with my first love who I met in June, 1967 - the summer of love. There is probably not a song from the era that we didn't dance to. I miss that era and very thankful that You Tube allows me to go back. I am happy that young people get to see what this groovy time was all about.

Oh what a nice clip! Don't think I've ever heard Frank have that much to say. He asked good questions on the Hotline.....which could often be an act of futility. It was great to see Frank and @PeggyNames taking a nice turn on the floor as well as @dancerdon and partner. This is another one of those "singalong" songs. Light hearted and a good tune made it perfect for the Spring time Sunday afternoon drive. Where I live in Kentucky, in 1967. a lot of the old horse farms were still up and running. Long stretches of white plank fences encircled each field where the horses were turned out to pasture. Many of the scenic rock walls that would border the farms are still there today. Stop for an ice cream cone, and we'd wind our way thru the Kentucky heartland for a couple of hours, feeling very blessed. Thank you Aaron....great selection for a tad cool, but still beautiful Kentucky day. Hugs to all!

Thank you Don and Aaron! Do you know, sometimes just one particular song can spark a memory long tucked away. Odd the way that works isn't it? Monday, March 25, my mother passed away 7 years ago. As I grew older she and I frequently did not get along well, even way into my own adulthood. So these childhood memories are special to me because at least for a short time, things were better. I suppose there were a lot of families like that in those days.

@Jean Lankton, It was so fun. A good friend of mine is from KY and his dad raised horses in Louisville so we got to see the training areas and stables. We all dressed up, went to the iconic Churchill Downs and I drank (many.....too many, lol) mint juleps and wagered (and lost) money on the races. It was an amazing experience!

great question: I've traced much of the dance styles in 64-66 to the mashed potato and we have to remember that the bop was being danced as the swing in the forties. I find it amazing how long the bop style lasted, going through the disco thing and coming out unscathed on the other side. Now how did the mashed potato become that "running" thing in the nineties (actually the running thing came from Appalachia).

I wouldn't say that Spanky & Our Gang were "knockoffs" of any group, particularly the Mamas and the Papas. Yes, this hit "Sunday...." and "Lazy Day" may fall into the pop/folk vein that John, Michelle, Cass and Denny were known for but soon as Spanky and company cut "Like To Get To Know You" and the politically charged "Give A Damn", that comparison stopped right there.
