LOL no kidding?, Hollywood cashing in on something?....like trying make James Taylor an actor (Two Lane Black top) or David Gates of Bread, a Movie Star?...it wasn't until the early 80's that one the Directors/Producers realized that "if you use what's "Hot" on the Radio in your Movie you'll get a MUCH better turn out" (John Hughes) Edit: mis spelled "Hughes"
They also did an alternate version of Bluebird. One of my favorite Mannix episodes. Here is the scene from the episode "Warning! Live Blueberries" (S1E7) with them singing Bluebird: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZF9bhAfl0rI.html.
@@The_Timinator It was revolutionary at the time for an up-and-coming band like Buffalo Springfield to make a cameo, and Mannix was considered a hip show, not to mention being produced by Desilu. The producers were taking a cue from the Monkees, which was a hit show at the time; if the Monkees show was used to sell records, then let's get Buffalo Springfield to make a cameo to sell records. Neil Diamond also made a cameo in an earlier episode "The Many Deaths of St. Christopher". Here is the clip: HTTPs://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZyRXFd1Hv2o.html
@@tammylewis2408 Yeah I got all that. the Springfield was popular and playing live around LA at the time, so they were cheap and available and by NOT using the "real version" of Bluebird they didn't break any contracts. ( Look up the Movie "Blow Up" they had the Yardbirds playing a mixed up version of their song to not break contracts) I have a cousin that's very big in the Directing and Producing part of Hollywood, they try to keep up with what's "hot" at the time, that's why watching older Movies, they can EASILY be dated by the Fashion and Music used...Mannix with perfect trimmed and combed hair, a narrow lapel Shark Skin suit with a skinny tie and tapered slacks SCREAMS 1967, especially when surrounded by "Hippies" and a GoGo dancer.
My sister and I always watched American Bandstand. So this brought back memories. I have always loved Buffalo 🐃 Springfield and Bruce Palmer was my favorite member. This video of him is precious. Rest in peace my lovely Bruce Palmer.
*About the road meeting* From Wikipedia: Young and Palmer ran into Stills while stuck in traffic in Los Angeles, Stills having recognized Young's distinctive hearse. It was not long before the trio, along with Richie Furay on rhythm guitar and Dewey Martin on drums, formed Buffalo Springfield.
Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne passed each other in their cars and then got to talking and The Traveling Wilburys and Petty's first solo album Full Moon Fever were born.
It all went south for Neil when they told him Mike Nesmith was getting the Monkees gig....he should have worn the toque to the audition like I told him.
It’s nice you can read him that way. To me, he came across differently. I read him as thinking American Bandstand was about him, and his starmaking ability, rather than about the music.
@@internationalicon he came off as genuinely interested in the artists on his show and I’ve never heard a bad thing said about, much like John Lithglow is universally admired in Hollywood by actors and producers alike.
After all my Years of Life, I've come to the concussion, that MOST, if not ALL Bands reach their Pinnacle before they're 30...there ARE exceptions of course... but the age of the LISTENER is a HUGE factor in this.
Couldn't here it too well. But Buffalo Springfield in the late sixties didn't last long, but what a great group of songs they came up with in that short time. Mr Soul, Bluebird, and of course For what it's worth that is still in tuned to today's society after over 50 years
I remember American Bandstand. My sister and myself always watched it on Saturday afternoon. Loved this shot of Bruce Palmer. Rest in peace ✌ my precious Bruce Palmer.
The religiosity was always Richie’s weak point. I try to put it out of my mind every time my phone rings with the SHF Band’s Trouble in Paradise ring tone.
Luckily for all of us Stephen Stills actually auditioned for the Monkees, but was not given the job because he had bad teeth! He told his friend Peter Tork he should audition and the rest is history, as they say. Also, Stills and Young knew each other before they "bumped into" each other on the street in their vehicles, but the story is more than partially true. Interestingly, in this interview, Dick Clark seems to instruct Bruce Palmer "don't say anything". I think this might be because Clark was aware that Palmer was in the US illegally, but not sure about that. If not, was kind of an "odd" thing to tell a guest or else he was just in an extreme hurry to move the interview along. And in perhaps the oddest and most unlikely bit of musical trivia ever, Neil Young and Rick "Superfreak" James were in a band together in Canada that actually got signed to Motown! Don't believe me? Google it!
I got to see them in a "teen club" called the Crimson Cougar in Montgomery, Illinois in 1967. If I remember correctly it was a Sunday afternoon show and a damn good one. That I do remember correctly. I had to wait until July 1970 to see Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Taylor & Reeves).
@Jeffrey Smith he is also stabbing his orginal country of canada in the back, real scumbag, I used to listen to his music all the time before , now I cant stand the phony liberal
I don't know I listened to artists for their music not so much for their political views just like I watch actors for movies that are in it not what they stand for in real life called entertainment folks and Neil Young grew up in my hometown so I do like his music along with Burton Cummings in The Guess Who
From a distance Stephen Stills looked like Peter Tork LOL (yes I know they were friends and I know the Monkees audition story, which Stephen claims was not true). And pardon the pun, but look how YOUNG Neil Young looks here. 😅
Could have been one of the best if not the best ever but internal and personal issues derailed them. Furay went on to co-found possibly the greatest Country Rock band( with apologies to The Eagles) Poco.
On bass, Bruce Palmer from Toronto Canada "Don't say anything". He was hired by Buffalo Springfield for live performances outside of the studio but not considered a member. Fine. Allow him to leave the stage before the interview and not humiliate him as a non-entity in front of the cameras.
Not true, Fred--Bruce was actually considered a menber of the band for both studio and live work--his deportation issues caused the band problems, though, and he was let go in favor of Jim Messina, who would eventually produce their third LP. "Last Time Around".
@b.r.ross Agreed. Bruce Palmer was a full member but he had to keep it on the down low because he was in the U.S. illegally. So was Neil Young. But Palmer got caught by U.S. Immigration and they deported him. Palmer snuck back into the U.S. by cutting his hair short and wearing a suit and tie. He rejoined the band. There are lots of photos of the Springfield with Palmer in short hair. Unfortunately, Immigration caught up with him and he was deported again and out of the Springfield for good. Neil Young was lucky, never got caught and finally got a Green Card sometime between quitting the Springfield and the release of his first solo album.
He was an original member of the band, and highly regarded by both Young and Stills. After he left, it was a revolving number of different bass players.
@@chikkipop Ritchie was my neighbor up on Sugerloaf Mtn west of Boulder back in the late 70's and early 80's. I think he turned to Christianity after all the years of music industry debachery. He was a really nice guy had lots of wild stories to tell. He would try to save your soul, tho.
@@gerrylavelle8433 Wow! For me, living next door to someone whose band I idolized would have been amazing. Sure wish I could've listened to him tell those stories!
@@chikkipop You worship pop stars I worship God, there's more wisdom in a sentence in the Bible than any pop songs, and a lot of pop songs have stolen directly from said Bible. Sadly for you fella, your unbelief does not eradicate God's existence..
@@dodibenabba1378 Let's deconstruct your incredibly misguided response: 1.) *"You worship pop stars"* And you know this how, exactly? Appreciating music and the people who make it does not in any way suggest "worship". 2.) *"I worship God"* What "God" and how do you know about it? If there is evidence for such a thing you could win a Nobel Prize, because it would be an amazing discovery. Don't you think all of us would want to know about it?! 3.) *"there's more wisdom in a sentence in the Bible than any pop songs"* You're comparing two things, both of which were written *by human beings!* Whatever for!? And why are you so concerned about wisdom in pop songs?! Did anyone here say they listen to music for such a reason? 4.) *"your unbelief does not eradicate God's existence."* Saved your most misguided comment for last, I see. Here's how it goes: No one needs to - or even can - "eradicate" something that *no one has shown even exists!* If you have proof of a god, and you can explain why you would worship it, please be my guest and present it! But if you can, it'll be a really big deal, because you'll be the first to do it. Otherwise, try not being so gullible. Cool name, by the way.
it's amazing not taking away from the other 3, but it's crazy that 2 superstars just happened to run into each other and then make a band Neil Young and Stephen Stills , same with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones
You totally forget how HUGE Dick Clark was to the emergence of Rock and Roll in the 50's and 60's. Even though he looks like the manager of a new car dealership, he was the way and the light for so many performers. It was slick old Dick who told the old white bible thumping politicians to F' Off. They tried to shut it down with the Payolla scandal and with the John Lennon says the Beatles are more popular than Jesus album burning backlash, but Dick kept everything rolling. Long before Soul Train he was featuring black performers, introducing Chuck Berry and others.
When a hippie meeeets a hippie, greet 'im on the road. Anyone remember when you could first recognize another longhair brother or mescaline eyes? Neil and Stills back in the day day. And I never knew about the Steamroller. Looks like they surpassed it!!
If they only had a better Producer for their Albums, things would have been a lot different. They sounded the same on a '64 Chevy AM Radio as they did on a HiFi Stereo at Home.
I had heard that he had some immigration issues due to his familiarity with marijuana and the authorities frowning on that behavior, and that was why he turned his back to the camera, so he couldn't be identified. With that in mind, to see him here was surprising.
Bruce Palmer and Neil Young came from Canada to USA as illegal migrants. Bruce was caught by the police for weed, and without US identity card. He's been deported back to Canada. But he came back to the US again, illegally, and then preferred to remain unrecognized for a while !
I had always heard the story they had a accident. One band was heading to Buffalo and the other band was heading to Springfield. The surviving members made the band Buffalo Springfield. Haha! All these years I was believing that story.
1993, Mountain View, California. Newspaper says Buffalo Springfield is playing in town. WTF??? I try to order tickets through TicketMaster. They have no knowledge of the concert. I call the venue. Only get a recording. Worried it might sell out I drive to the venue. Venue turns out to be a dive bar that seats maybe 50 people tops. I ask the gruff bartender about the concert. "Yep. Buffalo Springfield next Thursday." The original line-up? I ask. "Original drummer and original bassist" bartender replies. Holy shit. What a scam. Seriously disappointed.
