Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay Buffalo Springfield Rehearsal 1986

In the summer of 1986, the original members of the Buffalo Springfield met at Stephen Stills’ home to rehearse new material that Stephen and Neil Young were working on and to make tentative plans to reunite for a 20th anniversary reunion tour. The 2 day practice session marked the first time that the five founding members had played together since their break-up in 1967. The rehearsals were kept a secret and my understanding was that management was not keen on having the sessions videotaped. However, after some deliberation, the band over ruled management and decided that they wanted to document the get together.
I’d just finished wrapping a shoot when I received a call with an anxious Bruce Palmer on the other end filling me in- Neil and Richie (Furay) were in town, the Buffalo Springfield were going to be rehearsing, could I make it over to Stephen’s with a camera and lights and be set up in an hour and a half? LMAO! (Nothing like having plenty of advance notice, guys.) As fate would have it, I was on the freeway on my way home from work, I had a camera package in the car and was only 15 minutes away from Stephen’s place. I just happened to be the right person, with the right camera, with the right contacts at the right position in spacetime to record the practice, otherwise we wouldn’t have anything to look at right now.
From what I can remember and from the comments that can be heard on the tapes, at the end of the rehearsal the band was planning on more rehearsals and moving forward w/ the reunion tour. However, the paradigm was about to shift and I saw it happen in front of my eyes.
A couple of weeks later, in wee hours of the morning, I was listening to Stephen laying down some bass tracks in his studio when David Crosby, (who had just gotten out of a Texas jail the day before) made a surprise visit and came through the door with guitar case in hand. I remember the moment as if were yesterday: David: “Hey, Stephen. Do you want to hear some open chords that I’ve been working on in my cell?” Stephen: Uhh…well, hell yeah!” They played together for about an hour and a day or two later Graham Nash showed up. Stephen’s priorities shifted to reuniting with CS&N, in large part, to help out an old friend who was down and out at the time.
A few months later, the Crosby, Still & Nash reunion tour was in full swing, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin were having a successful run with the Buffalo Springfield Revisited, Neil Young was on the road with the Live In A Rusted Out Garage with Crazy Horse tour, Richie Furay was back in Boulder doing his thing and I wrapped up the rehearsal tapes and put them into a box where they were to remain for the next 30 years. For what it’s worth, from what I’ve been able to dig up, this is likely the only rehearsal footage of the original Buffalo Springfield that has ever been recorded.
The practice session began with a “theme" that was in Neil’s head and moved onto Stephen shredding the guitar on a new blues tune that he was in the early stage of conceptualizing. In this clip, the band is working out the nuts and bolts on a new tune of Neil’s that he would later develop into “Road of Plenty” which made its performance debut during the Crazy Horse tour in November of 1986. The song would, subsequently, evolve into its studio version, “Eldorado”, which was recorded 2 years later and released in the states on Neil's Freedom album.
The song's progression~
Road of Plenty ~ • Neil Young - Road of P...
Eldorado (live) ~ • Neil Young - Eldorado ...
If you like this, stay tuned- there will be more to come.

@@seanhennessey9869 Pretty sure I saw what Damien saw. There is something about Neil that outshines everyone else, which explains why he had such a hard time staying in bands. A lot of the other material by the other musicians was trite by comparison. I was in high school in the 60's. My memories of the Buffalo Springfield were that the Neil Young songs shined above all the other material. He is as good a songwriter as Paul or Brian. Cosmic, unpredictable, using chord changes in his own way, changing keys for the bridges. There are a few geniuses. Joni is another.

It became 'Road of Plenty' and evolved into 'El Dorado.' My recollection is that the 'Stick' is what Stephen called it and he had a new Bass Stick that had just come out that he was playing around with... as a matter of fact, on the night that David Crosby came walking through the door unannounced (a night after he was released from a Texas jail), Stephen was laying tracks down w/ his bass stick. Crosby started playing some 'open chord' stuff that he'd been working on in his cell and after awhile, Stephen started picking up on it and fed into David's work w/ his "Stick".

Daniil Lytovchenko Stills was also using an Altair Power Attenuator with that Marshall head through those Lead 12 cabinets with 10” speakers. I had one in the mid 70s. I find that setup of his interesting. I thought he must be using a distortion pedal until I saw the attenuator. It’s also funny to hear an 80s effect like chorus on Buffalo Springfield music. Makes it sound too 80s. It was great video nonetheless.

They'd all been around the block a few times by 1986 so they were fairly oblivious to the camera presence. I shot a lot of video of bands performing and rehearsing- these guys weren't playing to the camera or thinking much about being recorded. At one point, you can see Neil catching a glimpse of the camera and I get the sense that he'd forgotten that it was there. Like a split second, "oh, yeah." It wasn't until the session ended when it struck Neil that they should get a "video group photo." The player's focus was on the music which gives us a look into the window of their creative process- the real deal and that's what distinguishes the recording of this session, in my mind.

Joe Vitale, playing keyboards on this. Interesting that when they finally did a reunion (in 2011), Joe was asked to be the drummer (w/ Rick Rojas taking the bass position). I saw the first show of that short tour (Fox Theatre, Oakland, June), and they were amazing. The next morning, I went to breakfast at a very cool place called Rick & Ann's in Berkeley. The historic Claremont Hotel is across the street, and I guess that the band was staying there for the two days they were playing nearby. I walked in to the restaurant, was seated, and when I sat down, realized that Rick and Joe were at the table right across from me! I left them alone while eating, but when I got up to leave, I stopped and told them what a pleasure it was to see them play with the Springfield the night before. They were very gracious, and Joe simply replied that they were honored to be part of the band. Humble and thankful. I thanked them, and went on my way. RIP Rick ~

This video took me back to the late 60’s when Buffalo Springfield came on the scene and their music was a pure fusion of rock and folk music. I loved their music but sadly I was not able to see them in concert until June 2011 at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara CA. Even though only 3 of the surviving members were in the group, as soon as they played their 1st song I flashed back 44 years and listened with tears in my eyes. Buffalo Springfield and Neil Young have been two of my absolute favorite rock groups. Long May their music live on for all of us

Hey old man. You got me beat by a year, but who's counting?. ... come to think of it, Richie hasn't gotten very much attention and besides writing some great songs and being part of the Springfield sound, he went on to form up, Poco. During the short amount of face time that I had w/ him, he came across as a laid back guy who was really concentrating on getting into the music while he was playing- that look of concentration was his look throughout, but during breaks he would goof around- there's one spot on the rehearsal vid where he feigns being surprised that the camera is looking at him during a break gives a little wave to the people and smiles that I've got to work into an outtake reel...an idea that just hit me right now...wow lolol thanks for getting me into it... anyways, he was friendly and I sensed that his cordialness brought a calming, mediating influence into the mix. He and Bruce had a connection, in particular. I wonder if that was an extension of a dynamic that the band had 20 years earlier? He's one of the good guys, I think. .

I was told by very reliable sources (ie band members) that Neil Young's manager did not want the rehearsal taped which is the main reason that I didn't get any advance notice about the shoot. In the end, Neil overrode his manager's advice and to his credit, he decided to be a team player and went w/ the wishes of the other band members. Otherwise, the rehearsal would not have been shot. So, among other things, you can thank Neil Young's better judgement for this video.

The connection w/ the creative process, the collaboration, seeing a song idea in its early evolution, the spontaneity... that's what turns my crank. I'm not a musician but as an artist I can relate.

Awesome, it's like a peek behind the VIPs only curtain, seeing and hearing the conceptualizing of fantastic musicianship among geniuses of the art. These guys were my heroes for many years, and the blending of their talents as individuals is what created the magic for fans everywhere whether of CSN, CSN&Y, Buffalo Springfeild, or Neil's Crazy Horse. Anyway, a huge thumbs up for this upload which makes me feel priviledged to have access. TY!

Other than his gross anti-oil hypocrisy. A man that spent countless years jetting around the world and hauling fleets of semi trucks across the continent full of stage gear and sold millionsof albums made from oil product is now going to tell us oil is bad. Sometimes, for a few hours or days of our lives, convergences take place that we don't expect and can't plan ahead for other than to continue working on the skills that we'll need to prepare us, if and when the opportunity rises.. Sure I was excited to get the call and brought my top game to the party- I was coming face to face w/ some of the rock n roll heroes that I grew up w/ in the 60's/70's but I had no idea that another evening of doing what I did every day to make a living would have a degree of historic value and end up being a rare, behind the scenes look at musicians who are in the midst of their creative process, something that they usually didn't give up other than for (self-conscious) show. I see very few BTS of musicians working during that time period and Neil and Stephen (and their managers) were coy about letting people in on their trip. Eliot Roberts tried to talk Neil out of allowing it to be shot. I/We got lucky. Thanks for the upper!!

I think he was a little intimidated by Stephen Stills and Neil Young. They had much more success than he did. He admitted to envying their success, that's part of the reason he left Poco.

What a totally brilliant film and a matchingly brilliant account of how it was made. Thanks so much for filming it, keeping it, sharing it and putting it in context. I have done a good many NY tribute shows and found him an inspiring presence in my own work so to see this song in the real-time process of its evolution is wonderful. I first discovered it roughly when you posted it and have now found it all over again in 2020. It’s been a jolt and a joy both times. Thank you.

I'm a Buffalo Springfield fan from way back. They came out in 1967 I think, "For What It's Worth" was an incredible song. A band I was in at the time played their songs, ineptly at best. Bluebird was one song I could hack my way through. Great band!

A few months later, the Crosby, Still & Nash reunion tour was in full swing,
