BERRY GORDY wanted to keep them ON retainer...and OFF the CHARTS...so that The SPINNERS wouldn't COMPETE with his precious Temptations. Leaving Motown , and getting with ATLANTIC and Thom Bell was the BEST thing that could've ever happened to them !!
After hitting it big with their biggest Motown smash with It’s A Shame back in 1970 co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder with G.C. Cameron on lead vocals, the Spinners left Motown and G.C. stayed with the label as a solo artist. The group moved on to Atlantic Records through their dear friend Aretha Franklin and with the combination of their new producer Thom Bell and lead vocals of original member Bobbie Smith and new lead singer Phillippe’ Wynne, the Spinners became a hit making machine of the Sound Of Philadelphia in the 1970’s. Moving to Atlantic was the best move they ever made after years of being ignored at Motown. Great vocal group.
The original Rubberband Man Billy Henderson. He was always happy on stage just look at all his performance you could see a kid out thier enjoying what he loves doing he was a great dancer RIP Mr. Henderson.
Phillepe was such a beautiful singer! I put him with David Ruffin- there was a time the Temps got booed in order for people to hear the Spinners! I believe it because the Spinners had mor hits! Look it up!
Yeah, and back in the Sixties , they once STOLE THE SHOW, from Motown's biggest stars...The SUPREMES. And they did this LONG BEFORE PHILIPPE EVEN GOT THERE...with BOBBY on lead !!! THE SPINNERS didn't need PHILLIPPE...PHILIPPE needed THEM !! The Group's very FIRST HIT in 1961 , "THAT'S WHAT GIRLS ARE MADE FOR", was led by BOBBY . their SECOND and THIRD HITS, "I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" and "TRULY YOURS" on Motown , were led by BOBBY. Their FIRST MILLION SELLER, "I'LL BE AROUND" , was led by BOBBY. Their SECOND MILLION SELLER "COULD IT BE I'M FALLING IN LOVE" was led by BOBBY . Their FOURTH and FIFTH MILLION-SELLERS, "THEN CAME YOU" (co led with Dionne Warwick) and "GAMES PEOPLE PLAY" were also led by BOBBY . So again...."What's the big deal about WYNNE ?? The Spinners DIDN'T need him . What they needed was to GET OUTTA MOTOWN. And, once they DID, Their career took off like a ROCKET !!! (which would've happened WITH or WITHOUT Wynne !!)
@@NathanAHogan Such a good comment, Nathan. There's no denying that the formula of Thom Bell as their producer, The Spinners including Philippe Wynn were what took them to the top. The group had two hit records with John Edwards, then no more, and Philippe's solo recordings didn't do well. All of them reunited to do several concerts on a reunion tour, and they were very glad to all be together again, based on interviews by Henry, Bobby & Philippe. The pics of Henry, Bobby and Pervis at Philippe's funeral are so touching that they're hard to look at. No one was ready for him to leave here so young.
Out of the SIX GOLD SINGLES that the SPINNERS recorded on ATLANTIC , FOUR of them were led by BOBBY SMITH. Only TWO of them were led by PHILLIP "Phillippe Wynne" WALKER. ....So, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS PHILLIPPE GUY ??
@@jaylene.turner6524 Yes...and just like Ruffin, he (1) had a serious drug problem, which probably led to his early death, and (2) Like Ruffin, he caused serious DISSENSION within the group..and with their producer, Thom Bell. His EGO was INCREDIBLE, and he wasn't even the MAIN LEAD anyway. BOBBY was. Like RUFFIN. he wanted HIS name out front of the GROUP, and HE wasn't even an ORIGINAL MEMBER !! Bobby, Billy, Henry, and Pervis, probably breathed a great SIGH OF RELIEF once he was finally GONE !!
williamg2552 Yes,you’re right. But Henry Fambrough said that they were trying to convince him to stay, but his ego was just too big. He went out on his own and was only on one hit as a background vocalist with George Clinton and the Funkadelic group “Not Just Knee Deep”. He made three solo albums that went no where. Then he performed at small nightclubs in which he eventually passed away in one from a heart attack on July 14th,1984. Long story short, your ego and pride will kill you if you’re not careful.
All the groups looked like that before the "boy band" craze. Google Arsenio and the Temps vs. Boys2men. The boy bands, no matter how good, don't even compare to this kind of longevity.
The Spinners began their group & career in 1954. By the time their hits began to roll in, they were in their 30s & most of the other groups were teens & early 20s. Henry Fambrough is 85 this year. I guess they do look like old men in comparison to others that were entertainers at the same time.
