To celebrate our anniversary, we're exploring Northern Ireland (County Antrim) by eating breakfast in Portrush, taking a stroll down East Strand and White Rocks, and hunting for a fairytale castle. We'll also be telling you stories about Spanish ships, romantic booty, perishing maids, and the decadent flavours of horse meat.
If you are from Portrush, Coleraine, Castlerock, Bushmills, or anywhere else in County Antrim - what other locations should we visit while we are here? We'd love to explore more Northern Irish castles, ancient sites, and beaches!

I can remember visiting Glendalough National Park in Ireland, only twelve miles south of Dublin, and at a shop there was a t-shirt showing the four seasons of Ireland. It was four drawings of a sheep standing on a hill looking at you miserably in the rain.

It's lovely to see you two at play. I hope you had a wonderful anniversary. A great castle story for you - visited the ruined Harlech Castle in Wales about 23 years ago. At the end, in the gift shop, the attendant answered the phone. The gist of the conversation: Attendant. No, we're not interested. No, it's not what we need. No, it's not what we want....... Sir, this is a ruined castle. We have no use for double glazing. Goodbye. Thought it might amuse you - it certainly made us laugh.

It's really wonderful to see you guys exploring the backyard of my youth! So much history and natural beauty in that area. The whole coastline from there round to Ballycastle is gorgeous. A bit further round the coast is the coastal village of Portballintrae, which supposedly is the only place the UK ever shelled by a U-boat (no idea why!). Bushmills is just down the road from there, make sure you have a stop at the Distillery (oldest licensed distillery in the world), and make a stop at the "Gas Bar" in the Bushmills in some evening (still lit by gas lamps and lots of open fires throughout the hotel which are nice when it's cold!) Years and years ago, my dad was part of a local news April Fools' joke, where the TV news announced that Michael Jackson was going to buy Dunluce Castle. My dad was the supposed "leader" of the petition against it and got loads of phonecalls from people wanting to support him! People bandy around as fact that MJ was interested, but I can confirm it all stemmed from a televised April Fools.
@WanderingRavens

Hi Andrew! Thank you for the recommendations! We'll try to get over to Bushmills and Portballintrae while we're here :D Love the fun fact about MJ too haha xD We had a similar situation in Seattle where a newspaper reported that Russia was going to by the Space Needle (our iconic landmark). People were so upset they forget to check the date - it was April 1st.

I work as a Civil Engineer for the government in Northern Ireland and in order to help preserve this Castle I spent months abseiling down the cliff faces around Dunluce castle inspecting and repairing the crumbling rock face so we don’t lose anymore of this historic place, so glad to see people enjoying it, I grew very fond of it myself when I worked there 🇮🇪🙂
@WanderingRavens
@WanderingRavens 3 года назад
That's so cool! What a unique work experience! What sorts of things did your team do to the cliff faces to help preserve the castle?
@onkouth
@onkouth 3 года назад
@@WanderingRavens hey guys, we had to scale the cliff face looking for areas of soft crumbling Basalt rock, we then drilled out crumbling rock and grouted in some rock anchors, these are like big nails and help tie the rock face together in the less stable areas. Erosion is quite bad in that area due to harsh environment. We also had some specialists replace grouting in the walls in some parts of the Castle, this was done using methods and even the same stone and grout mix as originally used by the Castle builders and as advised by local Archeologists. All this was probably 10 years ago so hopefully our work is paying off, allowing good people like yourselves to continue enjoying our beautiful heritage sites like Dunluce. Thank you for visiting our beautiful country of which we are very proud, you will always be welcome in Northern Ireland 😍

Guys I've just started getting into your videos but I've got a few recommendations, apologies if you've already visited & I haven't caught them yet. Just going off what I've seen so far I really think youd like my home town south shields, cheap accommodation, food & pretty much everything else. We dont have a castle but we have Roman ruins as we were a port town, we have a beautiful beach & are in 30mins travelling distance to Newcastle (amazing shopping, food & beautiful architecture.. has a castle & cathedral. The best nightlife in the UK when it opens back up) & very close to a place called York which I also think you would enjoy.. Scotland is to the north of us which is beautiful, so rich with history & amazing people. From my travels across the UK I really recommend Manchester.. its such a vibrant city, so multicultural & friendly, besides my beloved north east my favourite place to visit. Yorkshire is amazing, beautiful setting & really great people. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!

If someone has already mentioned this below please excuse. The Girona was a ship of the Spanish Armada sent to invade England in the 16th century. A combination of the British navy and bad weather caused the Armada to fall into disarray and defeat in the English Channel. Some of the Spanish ships found themselves on the northern side of the British and couldn't try and risk breaking through in a southerly direction to make it back home so they were forced to continue northwards up the North Sea, around the tip of northern Scotland and down the west coast of Ireland. Bad weather caught them out again and several were wrecked on the Irish coast including the Girona. It had earlier picked up survivors from an another shipwreck hence the 1,300 people on board. The Girona was eventually smashed against the coast of north Antrim and went down with great loss of life. The wreck was discovered in the 1960s and excavated by divers. Many items of high class male jewellery were found indicating that high status Spanish noblemen were on board. These items and others are on display in the Ulster Museum in Belfast.

Hi guys, just stumbled upon your content about Northern Ireland, and really loving your reaction to this wee country! I'm from Northern Ireland and can recommend to you a few places that you might not have known about: - There's plenty to see in Belfast (Titanic Quarter and Exhibit; Peace Wall, and Murals in East/West Belfast; City Hall and Stormont) - Fermanagh (Marble Arch Caves, Enniskillen town) - Londonderry/Derry (close to Portrush, called the maiden city because its walls were never breached by any invading forces. You can walk around the walls today - Also there's a great place for food along the river called Pyke N Pommes, go check it out!) - Armagh (called Cathedral city for its two cathedrals - one for the Catholic church and one for the Church of Ireland - both called St. Patricks) - Carrickfergus (where Carrickfergus Castle sits, built by the De Courcys in 1177) - County Down - Newcastle and the Mourne Mountains (to be honest not the biggest mountains in the UK nevermind the world but pretty stunning whenever you see them); Downpatrick (supposedly where St Patrick is buried; also there's the St. Patrick's trail where you will eventually see the statue of St. Patrick near a small village called Saul); the Ards Peninsula (My Home - used to be called Little Holland for its abundance of Windmills, only one remains today but the ruins of the windmills are scattered throughout the area; there is also the lighthouse in Donaghadee and Mountstewart House in Greyabbey which attract many tourists) - Northern Ireland is also known for its Coffee - there are tons of coffee shops around the country, many of which regularly change their supply to keep you coming back to try more! - Also check out the whiskey/gin distilleries - Bushmills is probably the most famous and is really good, but there is also Copeland Gin Distillery in Donaghadee and Echlinville Gin/Whiskey/Vodka Distillery in Kircubbin (both in the Ards Peninsula); also go and check out The Friend at Hand whiskey shop in Belfast, its a really cool wee off licence that also provides a mini museum experience telling you all about the history of whiskey in Belfast That's only some of the things you can go and see in Northern Ireland. If you ever need someone to take you to some of these places and give you a bit of a guided tour (along with some perhaps questionable info about the area) feel free to contact me and I will see what I can do to help!!

I live in Portrush, and it's always amazing to watch others enjoying my wee town! As you head away from Portrush and towards Bushmills, I'd highly suggest checking out the Distillery (if they're still doing their tours atm), and the Bushmills Inn for some amazing food. Also, happy anniversary!

Happy Anniversary to you both! ❤️ And what a place to be celebrating. Looks like you got a beautiful day to walk one of my favourite walks! I squealed when I saw Panky Doos! My daughter and I had such a cute date there last summer. If you go back, you should try the Banoffee pancakes! Very sweet, but so decadent! They have a gf version (which is what my daughter had) and I am sure they can make them dairy free as well!

Glad you are enjoying this beautiful land. As others have mentioned Carrickfergus has a castle and keep from 1180. But if you are driving take the Coastal Road from Portrush to Belfast. Also, if you haven't already, it is worth investing in a year's membership to the national trust, this well give you access to the Giants Causeway centre free (causeway itself is free to anyone), but take time if you can to hit Castle Ward and Mountstewart, county down. There is plenty to see and do here, also plenty to eat! Best coffee, inn my opinion, is Ground, you had one already, but the chain is local. Enjoy yourselves!!

Lots of great ideas from people on here of places to visit. May I also recommend in Co. Fermanagh the Marble Arch caves and the Cuilcagh boardwalk trail...if both are open. Also close to Carrickfergus theres the Gobbins path..again if open...on Islandmagee and if there visit the Rinkha for delicious home made ice cream

A little bit late, but happy anniversary. Hope there'll be many, many more. Also, having lived with a N. Irish partner for over 5 years now, you'll probably hear the word "wee" a lot. Not in a lavatorial sense but as the NI version of little or small. Nearly everything is wee......when you or I would "grab a quick coffee", the N. Irish would "take a wee cup". Same principle applies to almost anything lol.

Hi you two! And happy anniversary too! I think by my own 4th anniversary my wife and i were doing the same as you but without the YouTubing bit. We’d been exploring Asia though instead or Europe Try a bit of Irish Coddle (a kind of stew) Northern Ireland has a few distilleries you might want to visit plus some really cool places like The Dark Hedges, and if you were Game of Thrones fans there are plenty of set locations there that you can visit as well. Enjoy!
