I'm Western Australian, and one weekend I was helping my dad with his seafood van. A car pulls up 2 men 2 women come to the counter, and 1 couple was American. They were amazed at all the different Australian seafood and ordered approx $350 worth. I wrapped it all up, and said "As a welcome to Western Australia, I'll give you a big discount, so make it $300". The American woman went to pay me the money, and I said "I'm very sorry but we don't accept foreign currency" and she replied with "oh it's not foreign currency, it's normal American "Lady, you're now in Australia and need to pay with Australian dollars" so she spits back at me "Well how inconvenient to tourists visiting your country, tourists can use American dollars when visiting us" .... I was just gobsmacked 😳😳😳🤯🤯🤯

I am from London and once on a visit to the US we stopped in Vegas. We were in a queue to get tickets for a show and there was a US family behind us. The small boy said 'Dad that guy is speaking funny' to which the father reeplied 'he's a foreigner he doesn't speak proper English'. I turned to him and said 'I'm from England of course i speak English, we've always spoken it'. To which he said 'Yes but you got it from us'. I then proceded to give an American a history lesson. He was still aurgueing until another American called him a very rude name and was disgusted that he new so little of his own countries history. My Mum & Dad visited a small town (Can't remember which state it was) and a waitress said "Wow, I've never met real English people before" It wasn't dumb, it was sweet. I agree that wasn't dumb it was just sweet. Imo what makes some Americans "dumb" isn't their lack of knowledge but their insistence that their imagination or belief about a country is more real than anything someone actually from that country says about it. It takes a special level of ignorance mixed with ego to argue with a Canadian about Canada or an Egyptian about Egypt when you've never even been there yourself!

My late beloved was multilingual. He worked in a very popular local store in a major tourist area here. He liked to joke with the foreign tourists in their own languages. I was taking him lunch one day at the height of tourist season. He had a German couple and then an English couple in line. He spoke German to the Germans and then joked to the English that their English was amazingly good for foreigners. They got the joke and laughed. The next person was a local American. She asked him how he could talk so many languages. He just laughed. Then she asked him how he could understand the couple right before her (the English). He did not understand her and asked what she meant. She said , "Well, they're obviously not speaking American!" He just looked at her in astonishment. He then informed her that English is a common American language and they were speaking it they just had accents. She was outraged that he said they were speaking English.

I liked your show, but just wanted to say this. My wife and I are Australian, we have been to countries like Thailand/ Italy/ Egypt, never once in my life have I ever carried a weapon of any kind even in places like Cairo or Rome. I'm saying that because I actually feel sorry for Americans who think they have to arm themselves in other countries. There are always going to be bad places in the world, but it shouldn't be the norm to think someone is going to kill you or harm you. It could happen, but it's not likely.

I may have been misunderstood, my meaning was just to say that most of the world is actually pretty safe. My wife and I have only been to a handful of countries. I was saddened when I have seen articles about some Americans asking friends if they needed to bring things like pepper spray with going to visit people abroad. It wasn't to infer that Rome is particularly unsafe. I was merely relating from my past experiences. Of course I could just be a dumb Aussie.

@@chubbymoth5810 Are you serious? Well, it may be... that Lance may not have explained himself correctly. Let's say that a large part of my work is based on "linguistic and cultural transposition", which does not mean "translation", but just what I wrote. Lance's choice to use the word "even" would be enough to support my thesis, even if he hadn't compared Cairo to Rome... and maybe even Bangkok. (Smile) Cairo is one of the most dangerous places in the world (it is a city I love) and, for example, Milan and London have a higher danger index than Rome (where a tourist, if he is not dumb, can even avoid being pickpocketed on a bus going to Vatican or eating badly in a tourist trap). And, anyway, Lance continued with: "There are always going to be bad places in the world... etc." Sorry, but now I have to go and set up the defense systems for the house and get the machine gun for the trip. I'm leaving on vacation. Ciao ciao.

I was with my girlfriend while she was working in her father's bar in Bulgaria right... It is a small, bar/cafe in a retro style with a even a little three wall library inside. A group of americans come and just sit outside waiting for staff i guess... While the only "staff" there was inside with no uniform or anything, taking orders and making drinks. People around going in and out with their drinks and finding tables to sit in and these guys still did not make the connection that there are no waitress staff so i had to talk with them and explain it ignoring some straight up rude comments of ignorance by one of them. They order, by the way very loudly, and we even had a chat with them. My girlfriend joining with a quick joke, a smart comments or just to help me with some terms, facts etc. At some point one of the americans notices that my partners is talkibg to some other people in a completely different language (in this case it was turkish) and decides to comment on how good our english is, how cools it is that we speaks many languages etc but also asks what is our native language. A very dump question considering we are in Bulgaria, have mentioned that we are natives to the town and all, and it is not like it was on the coast line so you can say they just picked up the cheapest place to go to beach and did not care to read anything about the country at all. So, I say that we speak bulgarian... They look at me and ask me again focusing on the "speak" part. It appears they did not know how many languages end up with "an" and thought that "bulgarian" only refers to your nationality. Later we also had to explain to them that our country is part of the EU and as such we do not in fact occasionally murder gays, "black people" etc. They just lacked any empathy regrading other cultures...

It is legal in most states but LA laws are based on Napoleonic Code and can differ significantly from the ones based on British Common Law.There's also emancipation. If you can prove you can live on your own, have an income you can petition for emancipation from parental control.

When I worked in Saudi Arabia for a UK contractor, an American met our company rep at a US airport expecting to travel to Saudi Arabia on his driving licence. Another one turned up to start a new contract with a hand gun, because he thought it would be like the Wild West. If he had been caught, they would have locked him up and thrown away the key. We told him to drive out into the desert and just bury it. Another American came to the office near the end of his annual contract, because he wanted to "book" his unused contractual paid "sick days".

I’m from the UK and have spent a lot of time all around the US and frequently get mistaken for Australian, which I kind of get, but once (in Indiana I think) somebody thought I was Canadian but I have no idea how, and sometimes if they can’t place the accent people assume you’re from the US but form out of state, that’s happened a fair few times.

@@TheDemouchetsREACT I think that was maybe a reply to somebody else, but i can say the V sign with the hands turned outwards is an insult in the UK, maybe slightly more mild than giving somebody the bird, but I wouldn’t worry about it plenty of people know it’s not an insult in the US, they’ll probably point it out just so you’re aware, for a bit of cheeky banter like we are very fond of (and often gets lost in translation) 😊

I dont think common sense and general knowledge are gained in the education system. Not everyone takes geography where Im from, but we still know basic geography and current affairs. I think we watch and discuss international news while American news is entirely US-centric. We also travel abroad as opposed to only within the US (but the US is a large country). Possibly people read more (and not exclusively YA trash that is popular with adults well into their 30s in the US). Unless you are from a major city in the US, you probably havent met a non-American etc. etc. I think its more about environment and culture.

About the US ID girl....don't you guys have an ID, like a country ID? who takes a drivers licence as for a form of identification for a formal procedure?
@tinalettieri
@tinalettieri Год назад
No, they refused to adopt one, seeing it as a socialist conspiracy to get everyone's private information so they could be rounded up for any infraction of some new law, like the scandemic mandates. Drivers license, with photo is standard. NJ was the last state to go with a photo and then they had to make it optional because a lot of people though that was a violation of privacy. When I still lived there and had to show 2 forms of i.d. to get a job for tax purposes, while the tax form listed a passport and people still understood what an American passport was, a lot of them didn't want it. Drivers license and Social Security card were preferred event tho right on the SS card it says it is not to be used for i.d. I now live in a country with national i.d. and it makes life a lot easier. Everything is linked and I only have to give my number verbally to have access.
