As a recovering addict myself.. I can relate so much to Joey. I live in Southern Maine maybe a hour away and I was a addict for over 10 years. I have 4 years clean this December.. I wish I could find you on Facebook and link up with you. It’s nice having someone you can relate to so much. My story’s unbelievable also. My kids saved my life and I thank god every day. I lost my first born daughter to foster care in Florida due to my drug abuse. I came back home to Maine and had 2 boys. My oldest boy is 4 and I promised him the minute he opened his eyes that I would never leave him. And I would never let anything stop me. NOTHING. 2 weeks after he was born his mother found needles in my backpack.. She kicked me out and gave me the ultimatum. I could have the needles and drugs. Or I could have her and my son. Needless to say, I been clean for 4 years now and my son just had his 4th birthday a few weeks ago. We ended up having another baby boy who will be 2 in January. Every day is a struggle and a new fight. But that feeling I get when I feels those little arms wrapped around my neck. Speak of the devil. He just came out as I was writing this and said Daddy I want big big giant loves. And gave me the biggest hug. ❤️ No feeling in the world could ever compare to it. No high in this world would ever be worth going back and losing my boys.

I want everyone who watches this to understand that this story is a window to a lot of addicts and recovering addicts stories. I work in detox, I see these good people fall every day, they are doing great and the addiction overtakes them. It's so sad how strong the addiction is... It's understandable and so dangerous. I consider my clients almost like my children now- I feel so desperate to help them, and in the end it's their strength, their willpower, it is them that have to crawl out the hole thats sinking them. I've seen some clients die, some clients stay sober for a long time, clients who stay sober and fall, clients who can't stay sober for the life of them. Clients mandated by probation and parole, clients who desperately want to change, and clients who are being forced to come by families. I see clients who want to do better, I see clients who want to hurt others by bringing drugs in. I see clients who's parents are exactly like this.... kick their child out and regret it and hate it so much, but have no idea what to do.... it's depressing. We don't have enough resources in the world to keep the drug sellers away from the addicted... we don't have enough detox beds, enough state funded beds, enough time, resources, or anything... I just hope when people see this they don't judge these people. Addiction comes down to the brain... the brain can't help it. When it gets something good, it wants more and more and more... and then without it the brain craves it.... and that's why it's so hard to just "quit" you have to fight yourself... and that's the toughest thing of all. How hard they have to fight against their own MINDS telling them "DO IT" and their own willpower saying NO. I love my clients, and I don't ask for my clients to remember me or love me back or anything, I just hope to god they can all beat their addictions. I don't care how many times I have to give them a chance, they will always have a chance and be human beings to me.

You never TRULY "overcome" the addiction, you just put it on "pause" for as long as you can take it. Every addict is one breath away from hitting that "PLAY" button again. It doesn't matter if you have 2 months or 20 years. It all comes down to your ability to handle feeling grey and colorless the rest of your life...

My son died this thanksgiving. If your child is young, don’t hold back on aggressive treatment. It’s your only hope. After years of use there’s no hope. The brain changes. Johnny fought like a hero to end his sickness. Too late. His brain was no longer the same. His doctor and nurses thought he was the kindest person they’d ever met. There’s only a 30% chance of surviving this disease . Don’t hope…Act. Don’t brush off the signs and think it will get better. It will not. Be aggressive with this drug

I’m sorry. I’m watching this with an 11 year old son and I want to understand the signs… just in case. Your warning has fell on my ears well. I don’t think he will, I’ve raised him as much to be safe, but I’m not a perfect parent (none of us are) and I want the tools I need to equip myself. Call me anxious, but I want prevention as much as I can possibly achieve. I know how easy it is to just say “what the heck, I’ll give it a go.” I’m sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine. I hope that you can find something that feels like comfort and solace in knowing that people are listening to your story.

@@This_RuthIsOnFire Thank you for your kind words first. Ask yourself first if you think he may be at risk now or in the future. Does he have anxiety, trouble sleeping, is easily frustrated over small things or perceived "slights"? My son had anxiety from a small age and that couldve been a contributing factor... the comfort this drug gave his symptoms. My advice is watch for things such as jewelry, money, and electronics that go missing. Dont be gaslit by explanations that dont make sense. Become involved in explaining that prescribed medication is not safe just because it comes from a doctor. . It is most certainly not. Opiods should be given in only the most EXTREME circumstances. My son was given opiods for a knee injury. And...that was the beginning of his end. Be well..and thank you again.

Big Chuck let's be real though here man your right as far as the media goes but as far as law enforcement and government are concerned were treated the exact same man. I am a recovering heroin addict white and middle class. I've never been given a break by le or legislation I've been locked up and stepped on and over just like anyone with a drug problem. the assumption that we are treated different is absolutely false. no one ever gave me a break or lent me a hand brother. I have more black and Mexican friends then I do other whites and they would all agree without a doubt that I was never given a better deal then any of them in any situation any of us ever found ourselves in. that assumption is very very wrong my friend.

I am aware that it occurs, I guess I just personally get frustrated feeling like people believe that I had it better then others. I does happen a lot you are right but there are also those of us who are white and middle class that did never get that special treatment that some people think ALL of us get. its just as wrong to assume that EVERY white middle class person gets a break as it is to make a comment like I did.....that's all........sorry I had to edit to add this part as an example.....I actually had the fact that I came from a family with a little money work against me I had a incident about 3 years ago where me a 2 friends were stopped with dope......2 of the cops worked one of my buddies to try and get him to say that I had supplied him probably because it was obvious that I did have a little more money......I didn't supply him and it was actually my buddies (who is mexican) dealer that hooked us up that night......it dosent always work in our favor.

Here in 2019, and I can't tell you how informative this video was and is relevant today. I am personally going to school right now to become a substance use disorder counselor and this showed the full spectrum from use, to dislocated families, to the revolving door of the criminal justice system, and to relapse/recovery/death. Substance abuse is everywhere in the US. It's hidden but it is present everywhere and I hope we can shed light on this now in society as a whole and be a part of a solution and not a silent enabler to this epidemic. These families stories need to be heard by everyone.

Forget just speaking to addicts, for opioids, heroin to fentanyl to codeine, all they need is suboxone (buprenorphine) it triggers opioid receptors without the high but it kills the chills etc, all withdrawl go away, one day of abstinence then on that, taper off it when ready and then near the end of the taper, start naloxone, it kicks opioids off the receptors, it doesn't get then high. Do all that and then talk, do it not? Don't even waste a word

@@susiearviso3032 These are good basic questions, the persons caught up in addiction can't realate to. It's, by analogy, asking an 8 year old, "can anyone thing of some of life's good highs that come from upper learning of science?" Such questions are just byyond the capatilibyt of the person asked to asnwer. Your question is a "half-question:, as it sees only on aspect of addiction, the beginning stage, which attracts most of us, namely the "high". But opiate abuse is so far more complext and harmful than to focus in only on that question, anymore than asking how delicious a scoop of ice cream tastes of an obsese persons weighing in at 500 pounds is asked, "an can anone think of some of life's good highs?" From your question, i can't help but to pressume you have zero knowledge of withdrawals. And without such knowlege, you're a blind man driving the freeway, uaware which pedal slams on the breaks and which which punches the gun (increases gasoline to the engine), hence you're a great danger to anyone who dare enter the freeway. Please exlain to us the term "withdrawals" and all that it implies? Oh, you've never have withdrawals because you've never been an addict. Well, I've never driven a car, so I guess we're even to me driving not know the differeence between the bas pedal and break is equal to you not knowing the differentce betweent a "high" and a "withdrawal", and lacking such knowledge, par my analogy on the freeway, spells only one simple phrase "Major disaster". Which is what your post is. :)

@@susiearviso3032 I can think of one good high: reading a post opposite yours that has some degree of intelligence attached to it. Your perception of drugs and abuse are so twisted and far off from reality, it's difficult to even discuss. I suggest first you read my book, "Get Off Drugs" so you have a clear and precise understanding of drug addiction, in this case particularly opiate addiction, because until you are able to understand fully what such an addiction does to afflict the mind and the folllowing results, you're just another bird chirping in the tree, without the slightest thought, as it attemtps to protect its own territory. The fact you ask "Can anyone think of some of life's good highs?" (implying such highs without useage of drugs") is naive, to say the least and undermines the whole world in which a drug addicts mind functions. My suggestion if firstly read my book, "Get Off Drugs" to gain a clear, propaganda-free book on the whole drug movemment, then email to me what issues you face regarding drug abuse, if none, more power to you. If many, then the same, I wil give more power to you to defeat this monster of an enemy. You can reache me direct at innerpeasemissionministry@gmail.com if you're serious about wanting to free yourself or loved ones from drug (especially opiate) addiction). It's the great double standard. If I print money in my home it's called counterfitting, but the banks do it routinely making money out of thin air, similarily if I sell drugs I go to jail for narcotics trafficking and all my assets are seized when I am charged with "proceeds obtained by crime" but these big pharma companies pay millions in campaign contributions and to lobbyist lawyers. Justice is only for those who can afford it!!! Lady justice isn't blind, obviously cause she is always looking to see how deep your pockets are and who your associations are to determine your penalty!!! We need to push these politicians, they have pushed us too far and we need another 60's type movement! VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!!

People who say just say no, or just stop doing drugs if it was that easy and you can stop whenever you want to there would be no addicts. When you are addicted to opiates you can't function good, your body aches. you have diarrhea and nauseous. It gets to be where you don't want it' but have to have or else you get dope sick. Sometimes you actually don't get high but you don't want to be sick so you get it. For the people that says you can quit you just want to be high, if you never been addicted before you don't know what you are talking about. To the addicts ,people are in and out of rehabs a lot it's a revolving door. When you get sick & tired of being sick & tired ask God to take the taste for it out of mind and body then give it to Jesus. I'm 14 yrs clean and never looked back and never went to the rehab, I used a lot of yrs please hear me if you are ready to stop Jesus is the answer. The thing about this is you can fool man and say I'm ready to stop but you can't fool God. Bless you, He did it for me He will do it for you

I'm going to be honest, I don't understand how the "addiction is a disease" narrative is useful. There isn't enough emphasis on that first choice to take drugs in the first place, that choice that changed the trajectory of so many of these people's lives. I struggle to understand why people in the first world knowingly and willfully put themselves in a position to become addicted to drugs. We need to understand where this lack of discipline and self control cones from.
@emilyl6746
@emilyl6746 10 месяцев назад
@mamba6546 unfortunately human biology makes that determination, not society. If you have a healthy body and choose to ruin it by taking drugs, it's only a matter of time before nature takes its course. The human body was never designed to withstand long-term drug use.

These people ruin it for people who really need opiates for pain.My pain doctor does blood tests on me to make sure I'm taking my meds and not selling them.I don't get any euphoric feelings from them.They help me manage my pain.If I didn't have these meds,I would probably kill myself.Being in terrible pain everyday is no way to live. I've had 5 back surgeries within a 2 yr period and live in pain everyday.When I do my grocery shopping, I'm laid out in bed for 2-3days afterward . I'm not able to play with my grandkids,I live on TV dinners,becquse if I stand longer than 15 minutes, I have terrible pain.These people are on massive amounts of pain meds,because after a month,you don't get the high feeling anymore.And anyone who legitimately takes pain meds then stop will go thru withdrawls,doesn't mean you're addicted.
@danyella1579
@danyella1579 7 лет назад
"If I didn't have these meds, I would probably kill myself" Users would probably say the same thing. They may have some physical or mental pains that they simply don't want to feel. They don't ruin it for you because you're not actually getting denied opiates. There's a reason for usage and getting high is just the tip of the iceberg.
@t.perkins209
@t.perkins209 7 лет назад
Dany Ella They do. Spending hundreds of dollars a week (two decades ago) on stuff that just made me feel normal wasn't my idea of a good time. When I started it was self-medication, not to get "high" - pot & the odd "eckie" did that. Without enough cash or an appetite for crime I wound up in the methadone program & am clean now. After over 2 decades of dependence I'm clean, & the collective opioid painkillers I was prescribed other than methadone wouldn't have done someone in pain more than a week. The abuse from people claiming to be in severe chronic pain is understandable but insupportable in fact; Australia has the resources to stop over-prescription these days, so do the States, I reckon.

Tim Perkins. We do hve substances that help addicts, the FDA won't approve them. The money made in the black market is tooo overwhelming for the gov't to shut it down. Judges, high political figures, hve money invested in drug traffic. They'll impose stricter rules in methadone programs (3 dirty urines? DETOX from 180 mgs., in 5 days). Assholes. Not everyone is a scumbag, derelict shithead, who uses. What happened to the drugs on the street? There's no real smack out there. There's no real cocaine. One won't get an abcess shooting the coke out there, today. THAT is a trip!! Sweden, of course, has the best mode d'emploi.
@t.perkins209
@t.perkins209 7 лет назад
Lizzie Sangi They already have pretty strict 'done rules in my little part of Australia; 180mg of it takes closer to 5 months than 5 days of course, if coming off 90 took me so long, the rules you're talking about sound like they've gone from ignoring civil liberties to positive inhumanity! I think things can change but er, it won't be easy ;D They'll have to at some point, if only because the current situation is a threat to world security, not to mention US national security. It's been a few years since I had hammer, let alone speedballs, I'd just end up with a habit, but I still remember why I like them :)

Not a single alcoholic or drug addict grew up thinking “Someday, I hope I alienate my friends and family and squander every chance at a productive life.” Alcoholics and addicts started using and drinking by experimenting just like everyone else. The difference is that for some, being high/drunk felt normal. Anxiety, and a disconnection from others melted away and we finally felt ok. That is a very hard thing to say no to, especially when it works so well for so long in the beginning. Being an addict however, is due to a mixture of genetics and societal factors and is not within our control.

The problem is Jeff Sessions. He laughs when it is suggested that opium abuse can be treated with Marijuana. He said" Oh you r going to treat addiction with the worst drug Marijuana, that is laughable". This has been shown to effective for 70-80% for addiction. The Government looks out for Big Pharma and large Corp. not "We the People".

Real-Batman marijuana is not worse but it certainly will not help long term sobriety for opioid addiction. suboxone is the answer.

realm batman It might work for some but pot just makes me more unhappy & confused if I do it often. Certainly during withdrawals, taken by itself it makes me feel terrible! Can help people face up to their problems, tho.

Jeremy Blaber the come down from suboxone is so much worse. the narcan taken every day will lower the chance for the drug to work if you happen to relapse. it should be only used for short periods to stop cravings and withdrawals. pot is definitely safer!

It is so sad to read these comments and see that some people are rejoicing over the misery of another race. The real problem with the world is hate. If your going to blame the government for the crack epidemic and the opiod epidemic, you must also acknowledge the racism epidemic that divides us instead of uniting us to love one another as the great Martin Luther King spoke of. We should be supporting each other through these difficult times and not tearing each other apart, our skin doesn't define us we are all humans and we all bleed the same. Have a heart!

I didn't completely break down until I saw Chuck Curran crying. Michelle you are so lucky to have a man like Chuck. And the two little boys are so fortunate to have the both of you to take care of them. I always wonder if they had drugs when I was growing up because I never knew anyone that did anything aside from cigarettes. I did grow up with my 3 Brothers smoking marijuana. But aside from that I never saw ANY of MY friends at school doing anything.

Wow. My mother recently passed away from a Fentanyl overdose and she did a few of these. She'd often not know what's going on and just look dead with her mouth open. The only way we could know she was fine is the twitching to keep her from falling over. This needs to be fixed.
