I brought my American friend Jason into a Canadian Tire store for the first time to experience the Canadian-ness for himself. He was very surprised that they sell more than tires. In fact he had a hard time finding any tires at all. What he discovered was one crazy store that is a mix of home goods, hardware, sporting goods, and Party City!?

According to Wikipedia, Canadian Tire started as "Hamilton Garage and Rubber Company" in 1909. In 1922 the two Billes brothers (not to be confused with the Blues Brothers) invested money in it, and incorporated as "Canadian Tire Corporation Limited" in 1927. Yes, they started with tires and expanded from there. Canadian Tire money was introduced in 1958. Interestingly the company also owns Mark's (Work Wear World), Sport Check/Experts, Part Source (never heard of it) and Party City. They also own Helly Hansen (since 2018). 6:30 Arguably, the US has more "Rona" than Canada. But I think he meant stores, not the virus. :)

@@JosephD PartSource sells car stuff, similar to what the auto dept at Canadian Tire used to sell (I don't think they sell much of that stuff anymore). I remember Canadian Tire's auto dept being really big and was almost a separate section within the store. They sold car manuals, brake pads, timing belts, tires, etc. I think the current lack of car stuff allowed them to open up a kitchen and other sections. I don't remember them selling kitchen stuff when I was a kid, but I do remember they sold movies and the odd Atari game (important things to a kid during the 80s). They've changed a lot since I was a kid, but they've always sold building tools, sporting goods, outdoors stuff for fishing, hunting, camping. Tell Jason they sell some clothing relating to fishing, hunting and camping.

My Dad owned an automotive tool manufacturing business and we spent many hours in an old Canadian tire where the floor was made of wood and you could see through the slats to the basement below. If my memory is correct my Dad sold some parts to Canadian Tire for a few years until they got big and sourced bigger suppliers. I remember when they started getting things like fishing gear and skates etc. Then suddenly they blew up and sold then tore down the old building and opened a bigger store with loads of other products - heading to what they are today.

At one point in the early 2000's, Canadian Tire DID launch a pilot program where some select stores carried limited groceries (mostly staples and frozen foods like milk, bread, butter, juice, eggs along with frozen pizzas, fries, Hungryman Dinners, etc). I guess the profit margin was not enough given the extra costs for cooler maintenance, shelf life, added cleaning protocols, etc along with the saturation of grocery stores in suburban settings sealed the outcome for the initiative but I thought it was brilliant..... Wife says to husband "We're out of milk." ...Husband is already starting the car before she can ask him to go out to buy some... "I'll be back in an hour or so!!!" :)

They actually did lure you with with tires!!! And you bought a bunch of other things! So it works. Also, Jason with his bucket looked like the Canadian Tire version of a kid on Halloween with their plastic Jack-o-lantern picking up goodies! There is something relaxing about visiting a Canadian Tire. You get lost in your thoughts as you browse the aisle looking for stuff you don't know you need until you see it. It's just got everything for the a suburban lifestyle (things for the home (repairs, organization, furniture, some appliances, decoration, etc) things for the garden in summer and winter, things for playing around the house, things for outdoors like fishing, hunting, camping..., things for the car). That seems like a less confusing mix of items than having a grocery section in a store with clothing and car stuff like a Walmart...

My dad spent more than 30 years as a mechanic for CT, at two different local stores. The items sold have changed a lot over time, but I don't think I ever bought a pair of ice skates anywhere else. They even had an exchange program where you could bring in your used skates and sell them on, and pick up a used pair that fit. It was a great way to save some money for growing kids' feet. My ultimate Canadian experience? My dad fixed Mr. Dressup's car when I was really young, so young I barely remember, and since I was waiting for my dad to finish up for the night with my mom and brother, I got an autograph.

If only they would have asked a manager to see the tire stash, they don't keep much on the floor since its wasted real estate for other stuff to sell. That why they only display one of each, most of them will be store on the 2nd level of the car parts section of the garage, the amount of tire also vary by season since we alternate between winter and summer tires. Specially in tire change season they will have stack of tire in the garage itself. I would classify Canadian tire as the modern version of what use to be General stores its not ultra specialized but you can find pretty much everything you need for your daily life and still have plenty of choices.

Canadian Tire started out with one tire store in Toronto 100 years ago. Over time they added auto parts, a service department, tools, hardware, camping gear, guns, sporting goods, small appliances, household goods, etc until they turned into a department store. At the same time they expanded by the franchise method to hundreds, or maybe thousands of stores around the country. When I first shopped there in the sixties they had auto parts, tires, tools, camping gear and that was about it. The thing about them was, they catered to the general public where other auto parts stores preferred to deal with garage mechanics and did not like to serve the do it yourselfer. I'm not sure when they expanded outside Ontario but now they are an institution across Canada.

I like to go around Canadian Tire reading all the Franks items. Such a vast majority of items they make from a bag of chips to a dish sponge. I like reading all the jokes on the packaging. I also like the smell of the Canadian Tire by my house, not sure if they all smell the same. Also, yeah, they only have a small looking selection out, partially because tires are a large product and are often grouped in 4's, therefore to show off all the different brands and sizes, they have got to only display 1 or 2, you know. Usually you would have to ask for a whole set. You'll likely find stacks in the back I bet. Cheers!

Canadian Tire did actually start as mainly a tire store. Brothers John William and Alfred Billes invested in and bought the Hamilton Tire and Garage company in Hamilton in 1922 and moved it to Toronto. They began the conversion to a retail and garage business at that point. The shop specialized in buying tires at a discount from manufacturers off season and resold them later in the year. In 1927 they incorporated under the name Canadian Tire Corporation Ltd. In the following 20 years they grew the business and added more locations. They added a full line of automotive products and then moved into adding home and garden supplies. At the time it was considered the most successful Canadian owned and operated franchise in the country's history as it expanded into a nationwide chain of stores.

Amazing! 😂 Best line: “...but it’s so much more than a tire!” Couldn’t be more true and I think CTC can use that as a tag line 🔻! Sixty years ago when I was 7 we moved to downtown Toronto, a few blocks from the 'Main Store" Canadian Tire at Yonge and Davenport. The Billes brothers were mad. The store was divided into two halves. The public half had the stock displayed vacuum formed on peg board panels with time card racks down the side holding computer cards. (This is long before micro chips, hard drives and even floppy discs. Computers sorted cards with holes punched in them.) You matched the product number taking a card from the slot, or multiples if you wanted more than one item. When finished your selection you then went to a cashier, in a plexiglass booth, who inserted the cards into the computer, you paid, and got your receipt and, of course, your Canadian Tire money. Your receipt had a number on it, 1 through 6, and you went to a counter and waited in front of your number for your purchases. Meanwhile, clerks on roller-skates dashed around the warehouse half of the store picking your order and delivering them, always with a flourish, to the counter.

At one point, the Heron Rd location in Ottawa DID have groceries. The best price in that vicinity for 2% Milk. As a child I always equated CT with ice skates and winter boots. Spent a Christmas Eve in that parking lot moaning about the lack of snow on the pavement. Finally some flurries appeared and they didn't stop until quite a large deal of white stuff had fallen. I got the "blame" for wishing too hard for a White Christmas to the point that we got snowed in.
