Do you use American Express?
@ravinkumar998

I got my AMEX platinum airpoints for one reason alone. It's the only platinum card with 55 days interest free period (as opposed to 44 days) What this means is I can pay of my balance comfortably in full in 2 pay cycles (so I get a whole month to pay off). Even if it had 1000% interest rate, wouldn't bother me as the longer time period allows me to pay full, hence not pay any interest 😁

Didn’t realise all the extra benefits with American Express. I’ll be switching from ASB soon now!

Thanks for the video - they are currently offering 500 airpoint dollars when you sign up with the airpoints platinum card. Seems like a no brainer to me given how widely accepted it is now!

That's the one I got too! Think I've now got around 600 airpoints for the signup and using the card, and with a 1:1 conversion to offset the price of Air NZ flights I've certainly got a decent return on the $195 card fee - for the first year at least!

Thanks for the kind comment! Glad you've been enjoying the content! I would love to make a video on mortgage rates, however it would quickly be outdated in the current environment, even ANZ has announced today they're increasing rates by another 0.5%. Best place to go is www.interest.co.nz/borrowing as it has the most up-to-date rates displayed. Thanks again for watching and the positive words!

Hi Brent Coleman, Could you please tell me how I can use earned Airpoints to book a flight ticket with Air New Zealand? I have around 600 air points on my card.
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman Год назад
Hi Ajo - great question! I have just returned from India where I used about 300 airpoints to subsidise my flights. When you go to purchase flights with Air New Zealand, they have the ability to use airpoints on the payment screen. There is a 10% service charge unfortunately for using points.

Hey Mate. Do you gain Airpoints on the American Express Airpoints platinum card from using your card for automatic payments? or do you have to physically use your card in store to get the airpoints? Cant seem to find this on their website or card FAQs.
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman Год назад
I have mine set up for direct debits such as insurance payments that automatically get taken from my account when due. The following is from the AMEX site: "Airpoints Dollars and Status Points earned on eligible purchases only. Eligible purchases exclude fees, interest, balance transfers, money orders, travellers cheques or foreign currencies in cash, gift cards, cash advances or withdrawals made from an ATM or financial institutions"

I have been investing weekly into Hatch & Milford funds (stocks), can i use the AMEX credit card to top up my wallet? and does this earn points?
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman 10 месяцев назад
Heya! Hatch doesn't currently allow credit card top ups. Sharesies allows you to, but the fees are generally so high it removes the benefit of doing so. Hope this helps!

Hiya Brent, I've got a platinum edge card, which is of very good value too. With $150 annual charge, you get complimentary return flights including one luggage with air NZ each year, within NZ (which may cost up to $300). Would love to hear your thoughts on this card.
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman Год назад
Hi Yinglu! It sounds like it’s already good from the free flight benefit! To make full use of the card I think you’d need to evaluate how to maximise points earned through shopping at specific retailers and working out whether it’s worthwhile, versus shopping at a cheaper retailer instead (eg pak n save over new world). Thanks for watching!

Does using an Amex card help in improving your credit score in NZ ?
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman 6 месяцев назад
Heya! Credit scores in New Zealand don't have the same importance that they do in the United States. Lenders are generally more interested in your use of credit than counting the the points as a score. Applying for credit with any lender (banks, finance companies, afterpay etc.) will often cause a short drop in your credit score. Weird, I know, I was bewildered when I saw applying for bank pre-approval to buy a house was making mine drop! Over time as you keep up with these payments, your score will build up again. Hope this helps!
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman 6 месяцев назад
Long story short, applying for a new card is likely to cause a short term drop in your credit score, but on-time repayments over time should see it slowly come back up. At least in my experience!

I currently have the ANZ Platinum Card and the Gem Visa card offered by Latitude. I recognize that the AMEX Gold Rewards card offers superior cashback rewards compared to my ANZ card. However, I continue to use ANZ since it's a major bank in New Zealand, and over the past two years, my diligent use of their card has positively impacted my credit score. This is crucial for my long-term financial strategy, especially when seeking loans from NZ banks, something that AMEX, lacking a local banking presence, doesn't support. Despite AMEX's attractive rewards, I was under the assumption that using their card wouldn't benefit my NZ credit score. So, are you suggesting that solely using AMEX and Gem Visa could still enhance my credit score? If that's the case, I'm open to switching to AMEX, although acquiring it as a third card isn't practical for me. Given my spending patterns, maintaining just one card maximizes cash back benefits. I reserve the Gem Visa for significant expenses, taking advantage of its 0% interest offer for six months and on select purchases at affiliated stores, which extends to three years of 0% interest. I do not use it for regular expenses like groceries, fuel, or dining out.@@BrentColeman

Very new to the American express cards, Got a Gold card and used it, payments says pending for long times? also made the payments to pay off the purchases made and nowhere can this be seen? I am confused as to how this works to normal credit cards and how they show payments made with the card and payments made to the card. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but it seems to be very annoying to use the American express card Any help on this please?
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman Год назад
Hi Reghard. I will speak from my experience using the Airpoints Platinum Card. My payments also say pending for a number of days, but all add towards the balance when I get my statements. When I send a bank transfer to American Express it usually takes a couple days for them to confirm they've received payment. So I have definitely had the same experience, it's a wee bit less intuitive as compared to a bank credit card, and I guess to bring people around they offer better benefits to compensate. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey, do you earn airpoints when paying utility bills, mortgage payments like you would with your everyday account? It's a little confusing as it says you earn 1 airpoint with every $59 you spend however it doesn't state if that is with specific merchants or not. Cheers
@BrentColeman
@BrentColeman Год назад
Hi Dan, unfortunately many utility providers have a surcharge when paying bills with credit cards. Mortgage payments are usually DD so you don’t have the option there either. Subscription services such as Netflix/Canva are fine to put through Amex. Supermarkets and fuel stations accept the card too. The $59:1pt applies to any spending through the card. Thanks for watching!
