Yes this was a huge deal, it was the top story in national news at the time. Frankly we didn’t know if Hammond would even survive, he was put into a induced coma and it was very touch and go. The doctors didn’t even know if he would pull through. When things start to improve nobody knew whether he was going to come out with severe brain damage or not, accident like this can turn people into shadows of the for myself, many people have to relearn how to walk et cetera, and many others can’t even manage that. Thankfully he pulled through, he does get a little bit of teasing from Clarkson because Hammond became a bit of a different person after the experience, he immediately turned vegetarian and had more of a “hippie“ outlook on life, whether that was due to the accident or his newfound respect for the fragility of life we can’t say. He doesn’t like to talk about it, Top Gear respected his choice and didn’t keep bringing it up, they spoke about it I’m on episode because of the public interest but then it was shelved and they moved on.
@@APFJJ That’s the great thing on living on such a diverse planet, we tend to experience the most things that are inside a rotten little bubble car when you start to look outwards you realise there is more out there zone you could learn in a single lifetime. It doesn’t matter what your interest is, it’s always something unique or fascinating to learn about, Whatever your interest is catch John at wide who knows what you’ll catch!
@@ilesalmo7724 that’s crazy, It’s like my dad who was never had a dream before, when we talk about dreams he always says his adjust conceptual colours and movement and noises but there’s no narrative, Where is mine can be absolutely mini movies played out in my mind. My dad doesn’t have brain damage, but I guess his brain is just wired slightly differently from most people that he cannot create visual images in his head.
Last night, the Drive Tribe RU-vid channel which Richard Hammond makes content for showed him talking about the Vampire and him getting back in it again for a video this year...
It was a huge story, but the british media always try to 'blame' people, even when the fault was mechanical. At the end of the day, everyone involved with running the car that day was in agreement with what they were doing, Hammond never made a mistake, the top gear management never forced hammond to do something he didn't want to do. Sometimes bad things happen, doesn't mean anyone is to blame for that.
remember this like it was yesterday, his book is absolutely incredible documenting his recovery, he was very very lucky to survive, but thank god he did💪🙏
Richard Hammon has said that he has absolutely no memory of his return to Top Gear or any of the episodes filmed during his 'comeback' Goes to show how serious it was and how LUCKY Hammond is to have made a full recovery not just of his physical self, but his memories I think he also suffered from a phenomenon called foreign accent syndrome when he awoke from his coma. Though that seems to not have been permanent (Foreign accent syndrome is pretty crazy too, people who have had brain injuries, a stroke, etc, can sometimes wake up speaking with a 'foreign accent' its quite bizzare)
I once had a migraine (caused by a head injury) at school that prevented me from speaking or writing any English, and had to resort to broken French. Not a fun day.
@@elliottsw Wow that's actually pretty crazy when you think about it, just how complicated the brain really IS for something as strange as that to happen -
Use to watch Vampire and Hellbender Drag race at Santa Pod. Great news is that Vampire has been rebuilt and a video today has been released showing Richard Hammond being reunited with the car plus he plucks up the courage to sit in it.
When this happened this was a huge story, after this event comedians would mention it in jokes on Mock The Week and although Hammond didn't want the crash mentioned again it was mentioned numerous times on Top Gear as quick jokes. Hammond has since embraced the fact he's accident prone.
Just watched your video. Hammond wrote a book called On the Edge in which he talked about his life before and his recovery from the accident in which he suffered a traumatic brain injury. I'm sure you'd find it as inspiring as I did
You should react to “Juan manuel fangio - tribute”. First dominant F1 driver, 5 time world champion, and he did it all in an era with no seatbelts where you sat more on the car then in it, and it was common for multiple drivers to die per season. True legend of the sport.
The scary thing is a previous driver was decapitated trying to break a record, the only reason this didn’t happen to Richard Hammond is because he is short, a foot taller he would be dead.
@@APFJJ no he was just the greatest f1 commentator ever nothing to do with the car also please react to top fuel dragsters ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i3CYGLURsf0.html its nutty
As a fan I was shit scared every day after the crash I was going to put the news on and see THAT headline “Hammond Died in Hospital” thank Christ me survived.
There's an episode of top gear where they cover this crash and hammond talks about it in detail. It's much better than this crappy footage with sky news talking absolute shit as usual.
Maybe you'd be interested to react to Hammond's other big Crash after this, where he crashed the Rimac Concept One (Electrical Supercar) in a Swiss Hillclimb Racing Event. As you can imagine, there was no sympathy from Clarkson or May when they welcomed him back to Top Gear. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iqYQlE3ZGrc.html
If James May was available, Hammond wouldn't have been the one to crash, and since James is taller he would have absolutely smashed his head to pieces if he was in hammond's place. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise. Still scary.
This is a great video, but I think people wanted to see a different crash. He crashed while filming for their newer Amazon show I believe (?) “The Grand Tour”. It was during a hill climb event in an electric super car. It’s a much better video and the crash that comes to mind first. They uploaded an official video, just look up “Hammond Grand Tour Rimac One Crash”
The BBC put three old guys in supercars and watched them almost kill themselves... The rocket car wasn't the last time they pushed them beyond their limits...
