It always amuses me to hear, "As American as apple pie'. Apple pies were made in the UK centuries before the colonisation of what became the US (first written recipe dates back to an English Cookbook published in 1381). In fact, since apple trees aren't native to the US, you can thank us for even having home-grown apples to eat at all... 😉

Many US brands sell their stuff under the same name in europe, but with different ingrediences. Fruit Loops for example are sold here too, but they contain different food colours. So many of your brands have other recipies for the european market, but they chose not to use them on the US market

The dyes in Europe are vegetable based such as: spinach (green), beetroot (red), so M&M's will appear duller. UK foods that are banned in the US include: haggis (contains sheep lung), all chocolate (because Hershey bribed your government), blackcurrent bushes (due to tree disease) and most meat (due to retaliation for our bans).

That bit about american chocolate is true, what I can recall the cholates' shelf life is extended by partially souring the milk used in the chocolate, using chemicals that can be found in things like baby vomit. It makes the chocolate taste really terrible. I've never eaten chocolate that tastes both bitter and sugary at the same time. It has a really dry feel to it, no richness or depth so it's like when you're munching on some treat that has wrapper stuck on it. Good chocolate is rich and creamy, with flavor coming from things like vanilla and actual cocoa (solids and butter) instead of sheer sugar.

Where you see US brands on sale in Europe (including the UK) it's because the recipes are totally different. Just as an example, McDonald's french fries in the USA contain *17* ingredients. Here in the UK they contain just *3* ingredients. The products are also manufactured outside the US to ensure proper quality control.

I am sorry you feel that way but I work in the hospitality industry, and feed us citizens weekly ,in our conversations this is one of the topics that comes up ,and the main reason that they are at first sceptical is our foods goes off quicker because we don't use chemicals too protect it from bacteria , some people believe chemicals in food help too protect you from getting ill as they are eating antibiotics, they even think feeding antibiotics too animals is a good thing as this kills the bugs before they can get into the food chain. So when they eat abroad for the first time they suspect foreign food of being harmful. Some change their minds some don't.

You are facing the unpleasant realisation that most American foodstuffs are banned around the world because of the ingredients, additives, extra sugar, etc. The governing body in the USA is the FDA, and this is an organisation on whom the public depend for the health and safety of their food, but whose real function is to aid and support the entirety of the food probuction industry. Good luck with your search for better food for your family, it will be a long and tiring journey. For your bucket list, have a couple of weeks in Europe and taste the difference. @@Killermcknight Good luck to your future with better food. I've been a regular visitor to most parts of America for over thirty years, and a regular user of both restaurants and supermarkets, and have noted a marked change over the years in the quality of the food and of the increasing quantity of additives and preservatives, most of which are banned elsewhere in the world due to proven health issues. American friends who come to Europe are uniformly stunned at the differences in flavours of too many foods to list. American bread is akin to cake in Europe because of the amount of sugar within it, and I'd pay money to watch your faces as you tasted a French baguette for the first time, perhaps with real butter and some soft cheese. Egg yolks are a bright yellow. One day soon perhaps. I think Americans live too close to the problem, but some separation may be coming. You will be reading about the sea change facing the fast food industry because of costs, wage increases, etc, and people are starting to economise by eating at home more regularly, and younger people are becoming more critically aware of what is actually on their plates. Read the labels, accept no bald health claims - Special K - and stay clear of the various sugars, fructose, etc, with which your food is adulterated for corporate profit. A huge job guys, sorry, but you're not alone in wanting something safer to eat. Regards, and good luck.

We add NaHCO3 to food all the time. And people don't realize it's used in fireworks, and strangely enough also in fire extinguishers as it's a flame retardant. It is a disinfectant and funguside. It is routinely used to clean up acid spills. It is often used in mouthwash and deodorant. It is used as a paint and rust remover for certain metals and timber. It is used to clean clothing exposed to uranium or depleted uranium as regular soap is ineffective. But it's most common use is in the manufacturing of cookies under its more common name of baking soda.

Here is a sobering thought about the US chicken industry. Although the European Union and the UK produces a lot of its own chicken, a lot is also imported and is considered a quality product for human consumption. The two primary sources for that quality chicken? Thailand and Brazil. It is *incredibly* hard to get food products into the EU/UK. Sobering for Americans to realise their products don't even make is as far as the loading dock. It is huge shame that the US government allows this to happen. .

It is! Our standards are just not up to where where they should, or where there are in other places. Our baby actually had to start supplementing formula in addition to being breast fed. I swapped him to a formula that’s made in Europe because it has higher standards of what’s good than the stuff made in the US.
@snowysnowyriver
@snowysnowyriver Месяц назад
@@Killermcknight . . If you can't get European formula there and if it becomes too expensive to ship in from EU/UK it might be viable to try buying from Canada, Australia and New Zealand which have very similar standards to the UK. It's a Commonwealth thing, where we share similar standards. For example, wheat from the US is not allowed here, but we import wheat from Canada. We also import a huge variety of foods stuffs from Australia, the most notable being beef and seafood. Also lamb and honey from New Zealand among other things. It might be surprising, but the Caribbean countries are worth looking at. Again, it's a Commonwealth thing and we (and the EU) happily import food from the Caribbean. There are three bigger organic farms and a few small ones and two big organic mills that produce bread, cereal or just plain flour and seeds for sale. I can go there or buy their stuff in the local supermarket or farmers market. Sometimes I forget how easy it is for us to buy local healthy food. But whenever I have a choice of coke or something local, it's the latter for me! In fact the german state of Thüringen, quite near my home, is the only region in the world where a local cola sells better than Coca Cola. It goes by the name of Vita Cola and was created when the state was part of East Germany (and thus the estern block) during the cold war. Coca Cola wasn't availabe but people still wanted a black, sweet and fizzy drink. A kids meal at McDonald's has the calories for an adult male, yet we eat the large fries with a big mac and huge soda. Its not so much the quality of the food making us fat, its the quantity. Unless you count that it just tastes so good we keep wanting more.

Every western nation has a food compay problem. The main problem is the non transparently. They add things or use backdoors to trick people into thinking that they are eating healtier but they actually aren't like. Light products are generally not better than normal products. Then the problem is that they blame the consumer for their ignorance. But if they made it easier for people and where transparent to where it came from and what is in it it would be easier for consumers. We see it in Sweden. It seems that the Swedish government has been on a mission for years to remove Swedish farming. With soooo many regulations etc. Yet we import food that has kemicals and other things our farmers aren't allowed to have but they have. Same with marketing. They can add "made in Sweden" if it is packed in Sweden. But the food doesn't have to come from Sweden. Unless you read a really small fine print. Why not just be honest to say it comes from here? Same with all the regulations on farmer. They are not allowed to sell their product unless they have a shop. And if the companies doesn't buy it they just have to throw it out. Why not let them sell it locally? It is so stupid and it is such a food waist. :(

well, iam from denmark, we can get special k, but that said, early 90s did npt favor special k here, because of a string of mis carries on women and some kids got sick also, so it was temp banned, kellogs changed the recipe and was allowed again since then, i havent heard of a 2004 ban at all. another fact, which is not here, has do with MCD, same period, the cheese they used here, made people sick, so they were forced to change the recipe

Meat is NOT bad for you, the doctrine - everything in moderation is right. Meat is essential for a balanced diet. Removing it requires constant supplements to manage the nutrients imbalance. Do you know what the crazy thing is? In other countries they sell many of the products without the carcinogen and poisons in them. It's American consumers that demand the bright colours and sharp distinctive artificial flavours... Fruit Loops over here look very different, compared to yours the colours and flavouring used are very withdrawn.

It's not really wise to make food decisions based on advertisement. The advertisement laws are different in the US, they can lie through their teeth to sell you something. Learn to read the labels, that is what we do in Europe. Also if you want sweet treats, learn to make them yourself, it will be healthier. You should also find European recipes, as American recipes make you add allot more sugar than you actually need. I hope these suggestions help you on your journey to health. 🙂

Having eaten American food the over riding memory is everything is sweet & you don't actually get a sense of what your actually tasting bacon is sweet cardboard & bread is just artificial doesn't resemble what bread is or that its not designed to last for weeks.

I have eaten octopus tartare in Krakow when I was visiting. Tend to eat my steaks blue, though a lot of places (particularly in Scotland) stopped serving blue steaks following the BSE outbreak (along with a ban on T-bone steaks). American food manufacture is all about costs and profit - bread is sold in stores in the US that has a shelf life well over a week, in France bread is largely baked fresh every day so natural ingredients and no need for preservatives.

Oooh that’s a first I’ve heard of octopus tartar, that’s interesting! Steaks served blue is not very common, I used to work at a steak house for 6 years and had only seen it a handful of times. Why a ban on t-bones? Yes, and it’s crazy to think “this bread expires in a week, we have to hurry and eat it before it goes bad” but in places like France it would be easy to do that because it’s fresh and delicious.

So really, when you see what's in American food, it can make you sick. And the citizens have to eat this every day. I wouldn't even give an animal what they have to eat there, but apparently animal food is better than what a person has to eat there. I know it's sarcastic now, but it's not.

So there is a better video floating around about US foods banned in other countries - but more importantly about foods that aren't banned but have different ingredients because specific ingredients are banned - the yellow dye mentioned in this video for example - which we obviously still have, but it's not the same dye as in the US.

@@Killermcknight Actually it's this one - the intro is a bit long, and the whole video is a bit preachy - but he compares 6 foods and shows you the difference between the US and UK version - and questions - if a company is already making a safer version of the product for the market outside the US - why don't they just sell the safer version in the US too? Which I mean.... it's a valid point. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oNNllIBFbl4.html
