Important context for that last verse. The person he's speaking about at the end is Jack Merrit, he along with Saskia Jones who was also pictured were murdered in the London Bridge terrorist attack in 2019. Saskia and Jack were attending a Learning Together event when they were attacked by Usman Khan at Fishmongers' Hall in central London. The two graduates were course coordinators on the Cambridge University programme, which aimed to bring offenders and people in higher education together to "study alongside each other". Jack Merrit had actually worked with Daves older brother, who was in prison for murder.

Oh, windrush generation were immigrants from Jamaica who lived in the UK from the 60s, but back then there were no such things as documents for residency. Later on, when it was deemed necessary by the govbernment to provide these things, they couldn't, and so they were forced to leave, even though the UK had been their home for decades.
@firstsurname7099
@firstsurname7099 3 года назад
Its even more creepy than that - folk from the W'Indies and other ex colonies are members of the Commonwealth, so a) they didn't 'need' papers for residency as they were subjects of the crown already (this was true up until the 80s I think) so no such documents could have 'existed' b) additionally Theresa May pre-PM oversaw the shredding of landing cards from ships like the Windrush - the governments own records of the Commonwealth subjects they'd invited to move to the British Isles to staff the NHS, public transport, education - effectively rebuild the country after two world wars and the end of the Empire - they literally destroyed in 2010 and started a programme of deportation and the hostile environment (getting them fired, withholding health care, locking them up in detention centres.

You are 100% correct. The media tried to destroy him for the week following this. This was at the largest music award show in the UK so it really got a lot of exposure. @Th31nf1d31
@Th31nf1d31 3 года назад
Why would you be so disingenuous? He was at the Brit awards, massive music production, the media was fawning all over him, millions of views on youtube! The song was basically a bunch of stereotypes of what it is to have a particular skin colour, like all black people are the same, just a monolith without any autonomy or ability to think for themselves. Shit like this does more harm to the 'black community' than help it. It used to be called racism...
@funkr77
@funkr77 3 года назад
@@Th31nf1d31 very interesting perspective. Too me as a observer of hip hop and also the Racial social climate of the UK for the last 30 odd years I saw how the media portrayed him. Priti Patel attacked him on the news and claimed that the Prime minister isn't racist. Dave then replied showing the pics of him talking about water melon smiles. The great thing is you are entitled to your own opinions as well as I. The more you research the more you realise that the system is a complete mess. Peace to you

@@Th31nf1d31 I agree that he got in equal measure a lot of love and hate for this performance, but i disagree that the point of this was to lump people together. The wider message of the song is CALLING OUT how black people are grouped in society even today. Yes, he talks about cultural differences, but by no means does that explicitly mean that Dave portrays black people as lacking diversity in lieu of being "just a monolith without any autonomy".

Dave is a classically trained pianist and holds a very high and difficult grade on the piano. He is most definitely playing; the other pianist comes out to take over so he can be animated with his hands and stand up at near the end. He uses piano/keyboard in a lot of his songs and writes the melodies/beats on a lot of them himself too. Not many rappers out there are this musically educated and talented.

You are right about the Windrush generation as a part of the British commonwealth , after World War 2 the UK encouraged masses of carribeans to come here to help rebuild the country .
@pamsanby8506
@pamsanby8506 3 года назад
And now the government is allowing all the people who rebuilt this country and paid their dues, and their offspring to be ripped away from everything they know and sending them to the Caribbean. They weren't born their, they have no home to go to and no money. Their pensions are stopped, even though they've worked hard to have money stopped from their wages to pay for it!! Theresa May calls it hostile and she started it as Home Secretary ... absolute racist politician!

They did not encourage masses of carribeans to come you have been sold a lie to cover up the truth. You need to learn about the British nationality act of 1948; In 1948 they passed the British nationality act which was only suppose to entice white people from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and richer non-whites, they thought poor Black and Asians would not be able to afford the traveling costs. When Windrush turned up Attlee's own Labour party turned against him with objections and his own MPs petitioned him, they even tried to send the ship to East Africa, in the end Attlee assured his MPs that the people would not last 1 winter in the UK. From 1948 until 1971 they kept changing the act making it more tighter and restricting on who could come, thats why theres such a problem now with anyone who entered before 1971. ..................................................................................................................................................... The act was intended to reaffirm what many in the late 1940s regarded as a “time-honoured principle”, the doctrine that all British subjects should have the automatic right to travel to and settle in the United Kingdom. But that noble and inclusive principle had been established in earlier decades, in the secure knowledge that poverty and the high cost of international travel would keep poor black and brown people far from Britain’s shores. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/22/windrush-story-not-a-rosy-one-even-before-ship-arrived Read The "Windrush generation" about a quarter of the way down. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_African-Caribbean_people#The_.22Windrush_generation.22 Read the archives the truth is in there Letter from Prime Minister Attlee to an MP about immigration to the UK, 5 July 1948 nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/attlees-britain/empire-windrush-2/

@@pamsanby8506 I have a lot of sympathy for the Windrush generation but it was not just Caribbeans it was also Asians. You need to stick to facts they did not rebuild the country, Europeans were the first people to come here after WW2. In 1950 5 years after the war there was no more than 20,000 non-whites in the country, mass migration from the commonwealth did not happen until the late 50s then it was heavily restricted in 1971 then resumed again in 1997. Commonwealth immigration, made up largely of economic migrants, rose from 3,000 per year in 1953 to 46,800 in 1956 and 136,400 in 1961.[10] The heavy numbers of migrants resulted in the establishment of a Cabinet committee in June 1950 to find "ways which might be adopted to check the immigration into this country of coloured people from British colonial territories".[10] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_immigration_to_the_United_Kingdom

In terms of the windrush generation, you’re right that the U.K. offered jobs and resettlement to thousands of Caribbean people in the mid 1900s. The big problem over the last few years is that our government has been deporting some of these people because they don’t have the correct paperwork or visa etc even though they have lived here for decades. It’s disgraceful.

Yeah, so the big ship most people came on was called Windrush but when everyone arrived they said "you don't need papers, you're members of the commonwealth" but now they're deporting people who came here at 2 or 3 with parents and sending them to Jamaica. It's disgusting. There's a BBC drama about it

Hey man, I totally agree with you. I think it is amazing that you have such an objective view about something that directly effects you. I know that it doesn't affect you as much because you live in Spain, and in Europe things aren't as divisive as they ate in the US. But you still seem to be a super grounded person, so I'm glad I came across your channel.

Just found your channel. Heard 2 reactions and had to subscribe. Great way to talk about the issue while taking a neutral stance. Dave's performance was flawless and I'd like to believe that this song opened a lot of people's eyes. I would second someone's suggestion to do Akala. I can see you've done part 1...just wait until you get to part 4...mindblowing
