I love the idea that Penny spared him. People may think she was being soft, but it was the total opposite. Now, he gets to live as a freak like she had to for the rest of his life, and now, he has to watch the freak he made live happily ever after, unlike he had planned.
ObeyTheAlien I agree, That tar was all over him, he will not just be disfigured, he may actually die from infection later. The plot was set in the 1950s (or 60s, I don’t really remember) when surgeries were not as impressive as the ones today, even if her father survived, imagine doctors removing all those tar from him, tearing his skin, if the tar reached his penis already, his father will truly be a “freak” worse than her.
Kitty Grimm penny has never been a leader though shes always been affected by others controlling her. Her father controlling her. Elsa playing with her head. Esmerelda was just the one who affected her in a positive way.
I think Esmeralda has a point. She was a misunderstood character in my opinion. She may have been working for a bad guy, but that's all. Esmeralda wasn't all that bad in my opinion.
I cackled like a madman when they poured the tar on him and I love the fact that he now has to live as a freak with those burns and melted flesh never to be mended. But Penny is the only one who gets a happy life, and that is the BEST fucking revenge ever.
He likely died anyway from his skin being seared off by the tar. When someone is tared and feathered their skin is literally peeled away and fatal infection usually follows.

Unpopular opinion, but I thought it was really mature of Penny to show mercy when she could have let her resentment blind her. Sorry but Esmeralda was right, they weren't thinking rationally and would have endangered their own lives and the lives of their loved ones for a temporary sense of satisfaction. Not that her sack of shit father doesn't deserve everything he gets but the "freedom" Penny was seeking would have been short-lived through his murder. Choosing to live happily with the man she loves is the best form of freedom. On the other hand, I'm not so above it all that I can't wish that they'd at least cut his face up.

The tar that they use on roads needs to be heated to pretty high temperatures in order to be applied to roads, so it's pretty damn hot when it's poured on flesh.
The tar used in the tar and featherings that were done back in the day wasn't the type of tar used on roads. It was called wood tar and it was not NEARLY as hot, but still hot enough to cause burns.
She never said what he did was okay, she just said they shouldn't risk their lives or futures by getting revenge. Knowing that she'll be happy with her friends and her love will be punishment enough.
Im all for revenge on abusive parents, but did they think about what could happen if he makes it back to town and tells what happened. I never watched the show, but Im gonna guess that the freak show isnt all that popular in that town and what they did could lead to a lynch mob.

The one thing I wish they did was to add a snake lady so maybe penny and the snake lady could be best of friends since they both have the names of reptiles in their titles. But I was so sad when they killed penny in the last episode of freak show. Rip the infamous lizard girl

Yeah, today it would be possible to remove everything and probably even do something with her tongue (sew back together or some kind of a plastic surgery). But this was in the 1950's so it wasn't possible back then.
