I think the unmasking of Big Daddy was meant to show that death sometimes comes in a very attractive package. It’s not always easy to resist the possible danger.
I love the fact that at Gino's funeral he wasn't all made up, his lesions were in full view. I thought the finale was heartbreaking but very well done. And the actors were brilliant!
Both episode 10 and 11 were really depressing but I loved them. If Ryan Murphy went full camp for the finale I would have absolutely despised it, and I was fearing that's what was going to happen when Denis O'Hare started to add more and more comic relief as the episodes went on
Needless to say, this was a difficult finale to watch - and having lived during that time made it all the more real - - and I think that's what made this a "horror story" because we lived through it. I have to say I was surprised that Fran and her two other friends didn't make an appearance in either final episode, but I guess there was a reason.
I think i was crying during 90% of the last two shows. I'm mid 60s, lived through it all and know many who did not and some still dealing with it. I think it was a great reminder of what happened... the suffering that people endured and also the lack of support from the government etc. Not what i expect from AHS, but well done. And, yes, I agree this will not be a season I watch again soon but it was done very well.
For those of you saying it wasn’t like AHS, that lets me know you haven’t watched from the beginning. This season felt very adjacent to Asylum which was equal parts dark and sad. I thought this season reinvigorated the series after last year’s misfire.
I loved the grounded approach for this season, they stuck the landing with this mournful and haunting ending. I had tuned out from AHS for most of the seasons but with the great reviews for this season I came back and I'm so glad I did. Ryan Murphy- more of this please!
Having loss of friends to this terrible virus, I was moved to tears at the finale, and in a way drove me to dig up some old photos to remember they were here and always remembered and loved. So sad but well done.
I honestly did like the season overall. I found myself excited each week for the new episodes. Got really attached to Gino and Adam. I didn't enjoy the finale as much though. I did think Gino's ending was well done, and found myself tearing up. I just wish there had been a bit more after that. I feel like it wasn't fully wrapped up.
i also saw the lack of diversity in this season as a problem but the more i thought about it this season became even more heartbreaking because it so directly mirrored that period where the black and brown communities were not only ignored but simply treated as invisible…we didnt even get the honor or being treated poorly we simply were invisible…this season is a message of a larger reckoning our country has to have and shows just how horrific and traumatic real life can actually be. This was a good season…not my top…but its close
One of the main characters Gino was Italian which at the time still wasn’t considered white as commonly as it is today. The actor playing Theo graves is not only 1/4 African American but also 1/4 Native American 1/2 Caucasian so like the ingredients for a Mexican. Lol Why does everyone want to create divisions this was a beautiful tribute to the whole community that suffered such devastating losses. I thought it was very inclusive
@@lorrainyhippohernandez4796 ... italian is white regardless of the delusion of the 80s-90s. you doing convoluted math to quantify the inclusion of diversity in a cast is embarrassing. this season didnt have that much diversity and considering the narrative of the story, it makes sense. stop lying and convincing yourself in an attempt to feel better about the lack of diversity.
@@tittylicker5320 To be honest, I didn't even notice lack of diversity. Why do people have to make this an issue all the time? By the way, back then many brown and black people were not out of the closet, so maybe that's why?
I've been an AHS fan from season 1. I've been following you guys for a good while. I applaud the both of you! The caring and sensitivity you shared towards these characters and this season as well as the former seasons is to be commended. You're such good company to keep. Sub for life!
I kind of looked at Big Daddy as Patient X who was a guy airline steward who traveled the world and believed to have somewhat spread it in different countries. Sam unmasking him made him realize where he contracted it and spread it amongst his group. Anyone else see this?
I don't agree with the patient zero part but I agree that he was the one who gave the virus to Sam. I think big daddy was the "boogyman" he wasn't real. He represented the virus, the fear and anxiety of the community at the time. He only ever went after the people who were sick or in danger of being sick. Remember in the park when Patrick shot him, his partner didn't see him? He didn't see him because he wasn't sick or in danger of catching the virus.
Idk I think the scene where he throws the black gay cop under the bus illustrated how even the white gay cop could still lay blame on the black man at the end of the day.
I don’t think race played a factor in that scene. Patrick didn’t want to be exposed for being gay and probably would have reacted the same if he got caught kissing a white cop.
I watched it for the first time today .. all the way through . And literally cried when Peter died .. broke my heart . The meaning and story just resonated with me.
I was honestly a little disappointed that you guys were right about big daddy being a metaphor.......but all in all it was definitely one of the best seasons of AHS in a long time. For the past few seasons, it's been super camp but this season was a return to Asylum vibes, and they really focused on the reality of the story while still keeping the elements of AHS that fans fell in love with. 7.5 out of 10 for me.
Watching Gino crossover was hard to watch considering that I ain’t got over my guy passing away (from blood clot) but seeing how Gino saw the love of his life Patrick come to take him home. That’s the way I wanna go should my time comes
Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts. I don’t have any friends that watch ahs so I can’t discuss or listen to anyone’s opinions or findings about the show. I feel like I’m getting to do that when watching your videos. Makes me happy. Thanks a billion!!!
I love your breakdowns and will gladly watch the two of you talk about about anything. One AHS thought: more about songs that were used in the shows: where did they come from (Calling You is from Bagdad Cafe: go watch that, kids) and deeper meanings/connections they bring to the episodes. you talk about that to some extent in the breakdowns, but more please!
I enjoyed this season, it’s honestly in my top 7. I loved how they gave this season a mystery/thriller vibe to it, and most of all the AHS Asylum references with the angel of death, fire island/government testing experiments (screams Dr Arden), the wheelchair being left behind while the character essentially walks into heaven (or ufos lol)- loved that aspect the most! Them featuring the big bad as something that was a real big bad in the 80s was heartbreaking honestly
I remember this time. I was a teenager and seeing all of this unfold was so sad. Nobody knew what was happening and the poor LBGTQIA was so ostracized. This season was so scary because it happened.
With the lack of diversity aside (very disappointing) This is one of the best AHS seasons. It feels like the show has transcended to a higher art form. Loved it.
I get what you mean but Pose showed how this affected that community. This specifically highlighted how it affected the white and privileged. Nobody was safe. They all died in the end. At least pose had a happy ending lol
@@basicradical3581so, what's your litmus for proper diversity? Is it skin colour? You do know that you can't know someone's race by skin colour alone.🤦🏻♀️ Is it ethnic association? Someone's ethnicity isn't always limited by skin color- for example, there are black Koreans who grew up in Korean culture? What is it?
I couldn’t figure out the connection between this season and all of the others. I thought this was one of the best seasons in a while, even if it made me cry 😢
Because. Ahs 1984. The 80s will never die. In camp. Straight horror. But the real horror. Our 80s did die. And 90s. Until people started to pay TF attention.
Yeah asylum was stilkll a great season. But the way it handled some really serious and real world stuff was borderline melodrama at times. This asylum and hotel have such emotional finale still.
I have a love/hate relationship with this season. The only thing I'll say is this: Initially, I was disappointed in the finale as there didn't seem to be any resolution. Then, it occurred to me: there IS NO resolution.
The Resolution is coming - with modern meds, those with it can no longer pass it on. It is possible that it will die out with my generation. Yes, people need to be informed and tested and responsible, but the end is in sight.
I like American Horror (This season was totally wow) but your guys breakdowns are why I watch it. I love the break downs and talk between you both. I hope that when the next season comes by you both do a longer chat than 20 minutes if you guys have the bandwidth, Nice work.
it was a good watch, but not in true AHS spirit, if it was a mini series of itself i think i would enjoy it more, but as a AHS season sadly its not in the top at all.
Thank you Ryan and Greg! Love your coverage of AHS. Really hope you all are able to cover more things in the very near future. Keep up the amazing work!
This was a really difficult one to watch. It was heartbreaking and hopefully made viewers get a glimpse into just how hard living through this time was for the LGBTQAI+ community!
Given the use of both Shachath and Big Daddy here, I wonder if they are both Angels of Death. Shachath seems to come to those who call her. Big Daddy comes to those who experience death directly related to their sexuality, be that through hate crime, disease or mad serial killer.
I love AHS, and this season just had nothing to do with AHS; I would have watched this and enjoyed it if they had done this to be it’s own miniseries and not be a part of AHS; it was well done and would have had a good audience. I don’t watch AHS to watch such a serious subject matter, I watch AHS to escape from reality and watch something fictional. I think the last 2 episodes were dragged out longer than needed and didn’t even have closure, too many metaphors. I hope we get a normal regular AHS next season and I am sure their services will be wanted separately if they want to tell another serious factual story.
Would love to see you talk about Joe Mantello and Russel Tovey and their respective roles in Angels in America productions (I.e the relationship their characters had) compared to their relationship as Gino and Patrick. Also interesting parallel with Gino’s devotion to Patrick considering Louis’s treatment of Walter Prior.
As a gay man, the impact of the aid in the laste 80s and early 90s is gutwrenching - but to be fair - this is not what I watch AHS for. I love Pose take on it, but here it was nothing I wanted from AHS - I want super natural like AHS season 1 or 3 I did not want or ask for this in AHS
Ooft were these two eps emotional. I think the general tone of this whole season was jus sad cause of how real it was. I had a great time. Do I wish it were more of the campy supernatural AHS that we usually get. Kinda. But that woulda prolly did a big disservice to this season. I think I wanted more answers to the more supernatural theories of the show specially big daddy and the weird subway lady. Was he jus a metaphor and how does a metaphor throw a molotov, or was he a ghost and was waiting for others infected to die? I dunno. Great season, cant wait for more of your content to come.
I was all in the whole season but the final two episodes really let me down. It felt lack luster and predictable. It was a good season but the ending was a mess
I think the season had issues but was done well. Except this shouldn’t have been an AHS season… kinda seems a bit disrespectful to not make the season it’s own thing. There was a lot of painful moments and it was emotionally horrifying except that’s not what I personally want from AHS. I will never forget the characters from this season because they were unforgettable and tragic but I didn’t like this concept for this show. In a perfect world I wish we could keep the characters but not use such a heavy story. And maybe have some hope for at least one character at the end
I think it was implied/believed that the Mai Tai killer/Mr. Whitley was responsible for the many deaths and dissapearances - and Adam was brought in to see his ''Frankenstein'' creature to see if he could be identified as one of them - and there it was revealed he was ''only' responsible for 7 deaths'' - which is still cruel but can only be linked to a really small percentage of all the dissapearances, meaning he was, like all those other men, taken by Big Daddy/the virus and not by the killer. I think that is the explanation they were going for - tho we do not get an explanation about what happend to his body.
I love Patti Lupone & her version of the song is good. The song “ Calling You” was recorded in 1987 by Jevetta Steele for a movie called Bagdad Cafe. Jevetta Steele version is hypnotic. The movie was released in 1988.
I had to pause it several times it was so emotional although I am an 82 baby I still remember the late '80s early '90s so this hits very hard out of all the seasons of only cried twice that was the end of 1984 season 9 and at the end of season 11 out of all the seasons those of the two seasons that made me cry for the last episode it got me and I'm typically not a crier but boy did they get me this season I was a wet mess over here 😦😥 😭😭😭😢😢😢😥 truly one of the most powerful endings throughout all the seasons this was the most powerful the most emotional it just hit very differently
@@stephaniestroup9289 I understand that it was important, I just don’t think it’s fits America horror story. I mean no disrespect I just do not think it’s fits the show.
I haven't watched Pose but I hear it's very good. I think more than one show can cover the topic since AHS is doing it's own spin on it. I actually liked how different this season felt from the rest as a nice change.
CAN YOU DO SEASON 2 AHS STORIES?! I thought season 2 was way better than season 1. I binge watched some of your old ahs season breakdowns and there were so many references to “maybe we will see this in American horror stories” even though we only saw a connection to Dollhouse - which I thought was cool!!
This season was good, unpopular opinion, but it's been the most real one so far. Maybe the majority of AHS fans prefer to go back to the fantasy types with Witches vs Warlocks, Haunted Houses and Hotels, Vampires etc. Maybe they don't like to see a real story.
Last episodes were a major let down per usual….😅 Who killed the ex wife? Who started the fire? What was the deal with the tarot cards? Just a let down 😢
@@Raquel.maksoud You take the events of the whole season related to Big Daddy too literally. A gay club devoted to fire is one of the many symbols of destruction and death, condemnation and denial that envelop the entire season. Of course, we can take anything as a metaphor and hide the holes in the plot, but most likely some more abstract idea is really hidden in this fire.
So I was very confused because Patrick had that tussle with big daddy when he went to check on Barbara's puppy. But now I'm guessing that was a sign of his health starting to fade?
@@cgonz777 I think that too. It wasn’t his time yet but he was getting closer like big daddy at Gino’s and he shut the door on him but Big daddy basically saying. I’m here!
this season was a hauntingly beautiful literal masterpiece, the tragedy, the horror was all too real and this season truly moved me in so many ways. i couldn't even fathom what those who lived through this were thinking and experiencing in the early days of the virus. how scary not knowing where all your friends were ending up, were they out there still? did somebody hurt them? ive never cried so much watching a show
i cried like a baby for the finale 😭 i really liked it but the whole “all secrets will be revealed”… i didn’t really understand what was revealed exactly. overall i think the route they went this season was really great, but at the same time.. predictable i guess?
A horror story doesn’t have to have paranormal elements or jump scares. This was a different type of horror story, one that is very real and I praise the creators and cast for doing something different. Anyone who enjoyed this season I’d advise you to watch “it’s a sin”
No, I didn't because the site I watch from didn't have episodes 9 and 10 yet. I've been cross with them for being late. I will check again and no it's not Disney+. My Disney+ doesn't even have any episode of S11 up.
I think the personification of disease as the hooded figure that is anonymous, aggressive, relentless, yet patient is a good metaphor in line with AHS theme. However the storyline of Hannah and the government conspiracy was not very grounded. I wonder what the meaning could be in their sightings and experiences with Big Daddy, close calls maybe? I was unimpressed with the very white cast as well, despite the acting.
I liked the way it started, but the last 2 episodes really just felt like "AHS: Pose" without the excellence of Pray or Elektra. It wasn't bad, it was just...meh. And like we've already seen it before.
