There were a bunch of good guys at Boyd's. But they either died (RIP Roy), got the sack (Bluebear, Mike and god knows how many others) or got so pissed off with Boyd and moreso Duane's bullshit that they up and left (Brad, Charley and countless others)
When I worked in hot rod/ restoration shops, we didn't act like this. You gotta be professional cause you never know when the customer is going to walk in. That guy is no foreman . Just a bully..I've seen these types before. Just walk around looking important and belittling the shop crew and producing nothing positive or any real work at all. But men like thomas were always great to work with.
Sometimes there are two different ways to do something. One way might make something easier but something else harder. The other flips the easy and the hard task. Two different people might have a different idea of which task is best being done easier or harder, and that’s fine. The problem comes when the person not doing the work wants it done his way, even though the person who is doing the work wants it done the other way. At that point a GOOD foreman just says, “ok, I would have done it the other way around, but you’re the one doing the work, so do it the way you are comfortable with, just so long as you can guarantee safety and quality.” Doing things like that consistently is when enables a supervisor to earn the respect of his subordinates instead of putting everyone on edge every day. It will also mean that when you DO disagree and have to insist on things being done your way, your subordinates will be more willing to going along with you. I’m a classical type “ A” personality, own my own business, hire seasonal help. I can feel myself being like Duane sometimes but this show made even me cringe at times. I know a lot of it was for dramatic effect but Boyd and Duane together seemed like the perfect storm to drive everyone away
I could never understand why Boyd had a person like Duane around. He’s was a jerk! Everyone watching this show back then and now has nothing but negative thinks to say about him which are all true. He has a arrogant sarcastic personality that is counterproductive to the shop or any shop for that matter. Regardless of one’s knowledge, good respectful behavior towards employees is key for a successful business or at least should be!
Duane could decend into bullying mode. People like him just need to be stood up to right from the off - they know where they stand then. Maybe easier said than done, but I know from experience, it works. Don't like the word ‘sociopath’ either. That's hurled around too much these days with not enough people knowing what it really means....
Duane should have gotten his ass whooped so many times. Boyd hired a bunch of push overs for a reason. They all never saw the show and seen how bad they were treated?
