American (Jeep Guy) Reacts to Porsche Cayenne Off-roading Ability 

I remember the years when Porsche won the Paris Dakar when it was actually held between Paris and Dakar. I'm just an Idiot Australian. There s was and still is a TV highlights package shown on an obscure TV channel here in Australia and I love it. I recall the low res film of the 911 and then the 959 in Rothmans livery winning the Paris Dakar back in the early 80s. I thought it was my secret seeing that race. None of my friends cared about it. I thought it was awesome. When the 959 won I was so impressed. A revolutionary car. Porsche had done it.

And, of course, 959 has been designed as hi-tech Group B (S) bolide, but because of Group B ban it succesfully realized Group B potential at Paris-Dakar raids.

They still share it. Cayenne, Urus, Q8, Q7, Bentayga, Touareg, Q8 e-tron, A6, A7 and A8 all share the same MLB Evo C/D platform. And up until 2023 all of the before mentioned cars had a EA825 V8 TFSI as an engine option (except e-tron which is EV). Every single car from Audi, VW, Seat, Porsche, Škoda, Cupra, Bentley and Lamborghini share different version of VAG platforms

MK1 Cayenne /Touareg wasnt greatly reliable, but „most unreliable“ is a little over the top. I would consider first gen BMW X5 to be way worse for example.

Most profitable? Im allmost certain VW T6 / T5 (since they are the same car just faceliftet more than some Hollywoodstars) and cost so damn much money. Im from germany, getting an T6 (not even 4 motion) with the absolute Base westphalia trim is over 70.000€ for an 20 year old chassis they produced millions (Transporter, worktrucks, Post, police...) of And the bi-turbos allmost have a guarantee for engine failiures at 60-80k Miles. Other stuff constantly falling apart aswell. Just money printing machienes

@@thedutchhuman The older models mostly featured in this videos, are one of the best if not THE best terrain cars of its era, certainly if one takes into account the on road manners. Most 4wd or AWD cars are way worse in terrain, even on the same tires. However, this capacity was as good as never used, yes. For an even worse example, see G-wagon.

These were the ones I'd recommend to check out for looks alone as a stocker ...

Mine is a trailer pig and I haven't washed it since 2023 😂 it is brilliant at towing but I won't drive it without the trailer attached, it's a little embarrassing

Mk1 first gen & Mk 3 are not that good indeed but the Mk 2 platform shared with Touareg was tested as technical service team vehicles on some of the toughest and at least 2 private teams used them on different Rally Raids (except the last one TransSyberia): South Africa, Chile Argentina Morocco, Dakar & Trans-Syberia.. Now about Trans-Syberia Rallye : Cayenne won the toughest rally-raids held in Siberia. The rally was open only to 4WD automobiles and trucks. Technical modifications were allowed but vehicles must be street legal. Most modifications made to improve safety, reliability & ease of maintenance.. 2007-2009 Trans-Syberia Rally Raid ran from Moscow, Russia to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. The point A to B - > consisted on 6,600 kilometer route on rough all-terrain trails across Ural Mountains, subarctic forests and thru Altai Mountains. The route continued on the Mongolian plains and through the Gobi Desert. 25 of 34 entered teams drove Porsche Cayennes - "Porsche Cayenne Turbo S Transsyberia Edition". These vehicles contain only some basic modifications to meet the raid race specifications to improve the car's stability bigger shocks-absorbers, off-road wheels & safety the co-pilot sat-nav, A-pillar air-snorkel, roll cage, roof rack with 2 spares shovel +escape tracks front bull-bar with extra lights + front & rear winch, exclusively mandatory for the Trans-Syberia Rallye. The race was won by Rod Millen two years consecutive.. Although as i mentioned 25 Cayenne teams entered only 6 cars were DNF not for hard mechanical issues, mostly flats (since only 2 spares were allowed for each vehicle) or co-pilots errors long penalties.. but all others complete the race and cross the finish line cementing the off-road potential of Mk 2 Cayenne Turbo S (+) Volkswagen Touareg version sharing same platform..

@@poplaurentiu4148 The toughness and strength of the car was never in question, even since mk1, more or less. The Drivetrain and system are no less sturdy than the best the mainstream automotive industry could offer. Its quite stout, for what it is. So A rally raid (I am very aware of the one you describe) is no problem. The problem of this car arises as it ages. Its not stuff that breaks because of physical impacts, but rather electrical problems and engine problems caused by long term heat cycling, moisture and age.

Only center as standard, rear was a rare option. But they do pretty well without locks, the computer is quite clever where to send power.

​​@@GoldenCroc I had the V10, it had center and rear lockers from the factory in the configuration I owned. Most of them were sold that way up here though I'm from the Northeast up near the Canadian border where winter means WINTER. There was an option to install a front as well though it was something I never needed so I didn't bother. If you Google around I'm sure you'll find a forum somewhere with the VW part number. TFL Off-road has a whole series on the Touareg, I can't remember if it was the V10 or not. But yes you could get all three. They weren't just good for what they were they were awesome. The one area of kryptonite was that they had undercarriage protection. These were built as luxury Vehicles not off-roaders so they never thought they would need skip pads. It's something that has to be fabricated and installed by the owner if anyone's going to seriously off-road them, though, who knows? By now someone might make and sell an entire set.

@@genesishep I know about it, I was talking specifically about the Cayenne (as those were the subject of this video). Not the same off road kit as standard or availible, though on the other hand you could option some stuff the Touareg couldnt get, like the hydraulic sway bars. You also could option what they called "skid pads", but its certainly not a complete underbody protection, no. I looked at all availible Touareg and Cayenne models before I decided on and bought my Cayenne, since I felt the tradeoff of what the Cayenne does better was worth it to me. I am from Sweden, btw, so I know winters and snow very well :)

Walked past a Bulgarian Cayenne Turbo S just some minutes ago on the supermarket parking lot in the middle of Germany and it looked like it did some off roading reacently.

It's kind of funny that people seem to laugh at bumper stickers on videos, yet get seems to get offended at these bumper stickers when driving.

MB has the highest life span of all brands before junked. Most miles. Pretty sure no one does more than what is stated by manufacturer.. :)

@BoBnotThat1 Yes I noticed that a Land Rover was sheperding the Porsche. Probably to help rescue the Porsche if it got stuck.😆
