Having seen my videos practicing the Mayan language here in Mexico, some people from the village invited me out here to experience true Mayan culture. So I decided to spend a week living in the village with a local Mayan family, practicing my Spanish and Mayan and just seeing what their traditional lifestyle is like. It was a totally different experience from being in Cancún or Tulum and it completely blew me away!

I was raised in Yucatán, but in the city where most of us speak just Spanish. My heart really warmed watching this video. I got tears in my eyes when I remembered that my father used to bring me and my siblings to those villages, the people there were so welcoming and attentive, they carried themselves with humility and kindness and they always made delicious and fresh food for us. They don't have much, but they will always share everything they have with you with complete pride. Now that I'm an adult, I think I didn't appreciate it enough, but now I do think that having been born a Mexican was such a gift. My dream is to be like you. Now I just speak Spanish, English, and a little bit of Italian, Japanese and Korean. I hope to learn more and connect with people just as you do

Here in NYC there are thousands of indigenous people from Mexico working in restaurants or deliveries. Everything is OK, but if you try to talk to them about their indigenous heritage they get offended. One of them who was working at a pizza place refused to talk in Spanish, just English, and he told me he didn't know Spanish because he is Italian.

Ahh I envy that simple but happyv living full of nature. All the food youre making yourself passivly and all the medicine from the plants.. it takes a lot of effort to learn such a lifestyle when you grew up in a city. Seriously, I came back here expecting to find more "gotcha" videos of him speaking someone's native language and all of a sudden I'm immersed in a documentary about a traditional Mexican culture. It’s wild because there is so much more violence in the US than in Mexico. I grew up in the projects and have been to China, Japan, Mexico, and Canada. Everything negative I’ve seen in US media and news about other countries turned out to be distortions mixed in with projection.

About 45 years ago, I went to Cozumel on vacation. We rented a VW Thing and took off for the other side of the island. Back then it was uninhabited. We took off down a road into the jungle. Several miles later, we came across a little old man who had a small farm. He had cows, which he was very proud of. He gave us some lemons and limes growing there. We took pictures and had them developed when we got back home. The next year, we retraced our steps, met the same man, and gave him 8x10 prints of him and his cows. He was so happy to have a picture of "Pepe" his favorite cow.

@@msergio0293 Yes, back then, once you passed Chankanaab, there was no development at all. Even the locals told us there was nothing to see. When we got to the other side of the island, we found out why nobody went there. All the island's sewer was being dumped right into the sea via a giant pipe. I'm sure it's probably not that way now, tho.

whether intentional or not, this video pulled me out of my own life and placed me in a Mayan village. When the video was over, reality sunk in and I realized I was back in my boring home. My mom and grandparents are from the Yucatán peninsula. I have visited them a couple times and they live very peaceful lives taking care of livestock and growing plants. At night it gets very dark and you can see way more stars than in the US, definitely planning on retiring over there.

7:53 That first plant they gave you is probably what's called Feverfew in english, aka Ragweed, and you probably got Peruvian Ragweed specifically. The spanish word for that region might be "la altamisa"? The herb is known for it's pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, and antiseptic properties, very useful for traditional medicine or areas where modern drugs aren't as accessible :) probably tastes best in a tea or somethin tho given that bitterness u experienced lol

I will be honest with this. I'm mexican and I found your channel by mistake like 2 or 3 moths ago, I remember when I watched a video about you in NY speaking perfect Mandarin and Spanish to people who work in restaurants, my first impression was like... "This channel is the same as the others that want to impress people speaking their languages and thats it, nothing more". But, I only saw the funny side of your vids. I kept watching your videos just for fun, but as I continued watching your content, I noticed that the real message is exactly you said at the end of this video. The experience of breaking the language walls and make new friends, meeting new people around the world and the most important, to love what you're doing is amazing. You made me open my eyes and I've noticed that I'm still on time to not waste my time anymore and improve my English and why not, to learn more languajes and dialects. Congrats! This video is amazing, watching you trying to cut the wood with the machete made me laugh so loud, and your reactions when you tried the fruits and local food made me think if I will get a similar experience when I travel to USA and try some local food. They live a simple but a solid life. In many countries it's all about excess and material possessions and competition (living better than neighbor, bigger car, bigger house, etc). And many of those are miserable.

The problem is the modern world forces materialism. You could live like these people on your own land in a modern country however you need to succumb to the materialism lifestyle in order to purchase the land in the first place. A hobo barely getting by on the streets of Anytown USA by finding food in dumpsters and alleys could be said to be living a simple but solid life by not actually owning anything so long as they are happy. To "own" property though, a person needs credit and that requires material possessions.

A moment of genuine human emotion I'm about confess right now as I watched this till actually 3am . And starting off I was unreasonably upset and jealous that you speak and connect with other Mayans easier than me but by the end I actually cried when you had that beautiful moment with those little kids putting smiles on there faces and wonder in there eyes. It's very interesting to see how they cooked the gohper. I'm a New Zealand native, ie Maori. We traditionally cook in very similar ways; heat rocks then bury the food in a pit whilst being surround by rocks in order to trap the heat.

The Mayan languages are so beautiful, I spent some time in the Lake Atitlan region in Guatemala where they speak Kaqchikel and it's amazing that such an ancient language is still used by the majority of the locals rather than Spanish. To my ear, the language you are speaking sounds very similar to Kaqchikel, so I'm wondering if any of the words are the same across the Mayan dialects. I wish I knew of more resources for learning indigenous languages, if anyone has any please let me know!

First I would like to thank Xiaoma for bringing this excellent learning experience to us on RU-vid. Marcos was very knowledgeable and taught practical organic farming; it was also great to gain some knowledge from the local medicine woman. Another plus was listening to a conversation in Mayan. Experiences such as these will last a lifetime and it gives the rest of us a glimpse of the world around us.

How sweet to see him take the time to show the children how to fly his drone. I have been watching his videos because they make me feel like I am traveling and learning with him. What a beautiful human being. When a child offers you food and you accept it, it is the most beautiful gesture. This touched my soul. May God Bless Him and make ways for him. Honestly my heart is bursting. Thank you for sharing. So inspired right now. I speak Norwegian, English and Swedish, I know quite a bit of Spanish and I always have to learn some of the local language to where I travel if i don't know it, in respect to the locals. I also learned some Polish when I worked at a builders warehouse and I know quite a bit of Japanese from my teens unfortunately I never had the possibility to practise and I never truly dove into it wholeheartedly. But music and languages is kind of the same and contains SO MUCH culture, the SOUL of the cultures. I need to refresh my Japanese and learn something new for sure, even if I don't travel or meet people the way you do. Perhaps Arabic would be the easiest language to practice locally!

For one, ur hella brave when it comes to foods, yikes! One time when I was younger we had a rat infestation in my back yard and the rats were the size of possums… one of the nights my parents were grilling chicken thigh kabobs in the back yard but when I asked what it was they told me it was rat and I refused to eat chicken for the next 6 months 😅. For 2, this video is definitely one of my favorites you have made! It’s amazing to see a culture living off the land the way they do and your ability to learn their language and adapt to their culture Is absolutely amazing and a pleasure to watch. Please never stop doing this!
