American Mah Jongg Lesson Strategy Joker Bait I Hit or Miss (mock card)

Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. One of the things that differentiate American mah jongg from all the other versions is the use of jokers. Jokers can be used for any block of tiles consisting of 3 or more identical tiles. Joker bait is a term coined by Tom Sloper (goo.gl/wG7YAR). Basically, joker bait is made up of multiples that you keep even if you do not need them. You discard one of the tiles from the multiple to coax an exposure with jokers. You can also hold onto single valuable tiles like Flowers and Dragons. During the pick and discard phase of the game, when someone makes an exposure with a joker using those tiles, you may be able to make an exchange using the natural tile to get the Joker. Be mindful to get rid of them before the end of the third wall. In this video, I play a game of solitaire to demonstrate the concept.

Michele, I am taking a Mahjongg class and your videos have been extremely helpful between classes to get me more comfortable. Your videos are so helpful! I cannot believe how quickly I am learning by watching them! In solitaire, I have trouble remembering which hand I am playing for each player. I found I can use the small strip sticky notes with numbers 1.2.3.and 4 on them for the players, and place them just below the hands I am playing. That way it makes it easier for me to see and keep track of the hands. It also helps me if I want to change hands and I can just move the sticky note. Thank you for making Mahjong fun and helping me to learn solitaire! I have my Charleston cards ready to go and I am waiting for the holder I ordered!

Love your videos. Learning a lot about the rules of mahjong. Question about playing the joker in this hand: ‘Any 3 Consec. Nos., Pairs Must Be Middle No. in All 3 Suits’ In reference to having all the Kong tiles and one pair of same suit, but still need 2 more single tiles to complete mahjong, if I get one more single tile to complete a pair and I have a joker in hand, would I still not to claim mahjong playing the joker with the pair? This is what I mean: 2J22-33-33-3J-4444 Is this hand a legal mahjong hand? If not, could I claim a discarded tile to complete mahjong if it’s the last tile I need and discard the joker? Thanks.

A joker cannot be used in a pair. In your example, you would need natural 3s.

If trying to get news, and only need a s Hito mahjong, can it be called as a single tile to win?

Yes. When you are ready to win, you can declare mah jongg regardless of the block it completes (i.e., single, pair, ping, kong, quint).

You hold a pair you don’t need until about the middle of the middle game and discard one in the hopes that another player will call it and make an exposure with a joker. On your next turn, you do the joker exchange with the other tile 🤓

Jokers can only be used in blocks of three or more identical tiles (e.g., pung, kong, quint). In other words, natural tiles only can be used as a single tile or in pairs.

In the final stage of MJ, can joker be used in a pair -- to make MJ? Or is a joker NEVER allowed in a pair, even to make MJ? Thanks. Love your videos.

Thanks, KL! A joker can never be used for a block of two identical tiles (pair). Any number of jokers can be used for a block of 3 or more identical tiles (i.e., pung, kong, quint).

How did you pick up the 8 bam as only a pair? Can you pick up from the floor for only a pair?

The only time you can claim a discard to complete a pair, is when the hand is ready to win as in this case.

If I already have the tiles “202” in in my hand and a “1” is discarded, can I call the “1” to make “2021”? The same with NEWS - let’s say I already have “NWS” and an “E” is discarded, can I call the “E” to complete “NEWS”? I know I can’t use jokers to complete either of those scenarios.

The only time you can call a discard to complete a block with singles (i.e., 2021, NEWS) is if you are ready to win. Otherwise, you have to pick them from the wall yourself :)

Joker Bait is a strategy that can create an opportunity for a joker exchange. A player would keep a pair that is not needed for their hand. At about the middle of the middle wall (~60 tiles remaining), the player would discard one of these tiles to entice another player to make an exposure with a joker.
