I saw the film The Fighting Sullivans in (I think) 1944 when I was nearly six and living in Wales with my mother and grandmother as my father was in the army in Burma. My first meeting with him that I can remember was on VE day when he came home on debarkation leave but he did come back so I was lucky. The ending of the has stayed with me ever since. I now know a Captain RN who held a post in the Soloman Islands and who dived on USS Juneau the ship on which the five brothers served and died. We must never forget those who didn't come back or who came back "with wounds which would never heal until the breath was out of the body" so we could live in freedom.

Would the pronunciation be Abe, or Ah-bay? I keep seeing a Japanese Abe Lincoln.😂

The sad story of America’s loss of the battle of Guadalcanal. Or so I surmise, from the given narrative.

Callaghan is the worst commander in American history. Why he refused to let the ships fire on the enemy was just ignorant. Even though he died from his stupidity and cowardice the USA gave him a Medal of Honor for some reason. Today i view any Medal of Honor winner with doubt of their actual accomplishments.

The only way that Callaghan could make a significant impact with his weak fleet is to get his Heavy Cruisers close to the Japanese Battleships. He had to hold his fire until his 8 inch rifles were close enough to penetrate the armor of the "Big Ones." The fact that any of the US ships survived is a testimony to Callaghan's professionalism.
