You know a breed is already screwed when it clearly has a number of health issues from the start.

Where are the depictions of ancient mastiff-like dogs that had excessive wrinkling, barely-visible eyes, and structure such as what you want to create? How is this a "recreation"? The ancient mastiff-like dogs looked absolutely nothing like this. The current Neapolitans that are winning in the show ring look nothing like their working counterparts. They are LESS functional and have the potential to suffer from more health problems.

+faultroy absolutely right,mollosser was a ancient dog from epirus greece that traveled the globe,in which all mastiff breeds derived from, if this guy used a neopolitan mastiff one would think he's jumped off the track already,

Wasn't going to say anything, but I will agree with Carrie Allen and faultroy. Mesopotamian "Mollosers"? ... Hey it's your fantasy, the dogs are your victims and you will get abuse from all canine corners, there I did say something. My wife and I are breeding Presa Danes, wonderful companions, excellent guard dogs, do require a firm hand and lots of supervised correct socializing and BTW they are well within the real Molloser "look" www.dogbreedinfo.com/p/presadane.htm ~ video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=AwrTcdCblg9YLLgAy9onnIlQ?p=presa+danes&fr=yhs-mozilla-003&fr2=piv-web&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-003#action=view&id=51&vid=d260343b8b929eab871b5cca08c7426c These are not our dogs but representative. Tulla BullyKutta Kennels UK What everyone is saying is either the creator has misinterpreted literally every word ever spoken about the original molossus, hasn't really read much to begin with, or is just plain delusional. I think it's a combination of all the above. 5000 years ago, America wasn't America. I have only seen spitz types that the native Americans had in old artwork.

It's great to focus on a look, and try to do something like visually recreate the molossus, but please select first and foremost for health and longevity. We don't need more dogs that need to be put down at 7 years old because their body has failed.

Unless you've recovered and resurrected DNA from the extinct Molosus, it's not possible to recreate an ancient Molosus.

You are right, but you are missing the point entirely. It is not about bringing that exact same dog and dna back, but the dog type with the siz3, proportions, looks and functionality of that old molosus to the modern era. It is like trying to bring back the Atlas lion using huge Cape Lions and breeding for size and mass. The DNA will never be brought back, but the space can be filled up again

I had originally wanted an American Bully, but once I saw the direction and massive breeding issues, I decided to move to a larger more challenging breed. Ive only started learning about Neopolitan Mastiffs in the last year, and now discovered the American Molossus... I cannot wait to learn more. Thank you soo much, Mr. Curtis, you are an inspiration!

because its common sense if you understand dogs, breed dogs, own dogs and understand how they are not meant to be this heavy, this wrinkled or this overweight. The original mastiffs that fought were more, if anything, resembling a Boerboel or a Bullenbijter, with their athletic frame, non-wrinkled body carrying no unnecessary excess fat, flabby skin and excessive muscle tone. This dog is in for 'serious' health issues, probably even in puppyhood, due to overheating, breathing difficulties, weight, leg complaints, hip dysplasia, eyesight problems, eye infections and massive joint problems....at least have the decency to understand a topic before attempting to white knight on something you obviously know ZERO about.

Molossus was the dog of the legion, their closest relative today is the cane corso, not Neapolitan mastiff. Imagine a cane corso that is two/half times the size, of solid muscle. Incredible speed, stamina, intelligence, and a ridiculous bite. They literally were known for dragging Carthaginians off the battle field, in full armor, and ripping them to shreds. This guy has lots of work to be done, one year is not nearly enough.
@sultanmahmood7485
@sultanmahmood7485 10 месяцев назад
Even today's cane corso's are terrible. in Italy the cane corso, cane de presa and Neapolitan mastiff was the same dog. The Neapolitan mastiff was actually the mastiff of Italy which was a large dog with good leg and athleticism. The cane corso was a type of dog in Italy rather than an actual breed which became a standardised breed decades later in the late 20th century. People think they have cane corso but what they have is a water down diluted mastiff which couldn't bite out of a wet paper bag. This 700psi bite force if pure bs.

Because what the world needs right now is a dog that is bigger, wrinklier and more fearless than the current Neapolitan Mastiff! Let's make a molossus a colossus! Yep, let's take something that is already right-royally fucked up and make it more fucked-up! It's the idea of an AKC Neapolitan Breeder, Marcus Curtis, who specializes in what he calls Old World Mastinos - essentially the most exaggerated Neapolitan Mastiffs you are ever likely to see. And now he wants to take it further. If you suffer from hypertension, it might be better to not watch.

@DagmarSinke
@DagmarSinke 8 лет назад
+eatbanna Wait, what?! You honestly think excess skin is what makes a good breeder and a good dog? What is this, opposite world? Or a complete lack of education? Just google what the original neo's looked like. Athletic, loose skin but in no way extreme. Fierce dogs you'd actually want to go to war with. Not the poor modern day creatures that are barely able to walk and suffer from severely infected skin in those folds. The breed has been butchered to the point where these dogs suffer unbearably under their exterior. It's a shame, and it is actually abusive to breed dogs that aren't in any way functional.

For height and movement have you ever though about the still in existence ancient breeds such as he Kangal, or Boz Shepherd? Or maybe the Central Asian Ovcharka for body and health? I would think the Neapolitan Mastiff (for it's heavy dewlaps and thick skin), Kangal (for it's height and movement and courage), and Boerboel (for it's power and heavy skull) and the Boerboel is not a wanderer and it's prey drive is linked to the owner's/handler's interests.

Lol yea, but if you think about it no dog is "pure" just look at the American Staffordshire Terrier it's a mix between the American Pitbull Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull terrier and over years they've now considered it a separate breed from the American Pitbull terrier and the Staffordshire Bull terrier. Same goes for the German Shepherd because the creator of the breed bought a dog that looked similar to a wolf off a man and then they bred and so on.

I actually have dreamed about it for some time now. I have often thought about it more in the shape of a modern bandog molosus. Creating basically a Canis Pugnax or something like that. For me, It would be a dog with the general shape of prey molosus like the Pampa Argentino, the Cane Corso and the Presa Canario but having the mass of a Neapolitan Mastiff, Boerboel, Tibetan Mastiff, the broad chest of the Bulldog and American Bully and the height of a Great Dane, an Alabai, an Aksarai Malaklisi or an Irish Wolfhound. Therefore, I would Use the breeds of this list: Cane Corso Alabai Neapolitan Mastiff Boerboel Great Dane American Bully XL English Bulldog English Mastiff Presa Canario Pampa Argentino I'm sure your project would use more blood from heavy Mastiffs than mine and would favor the loose skin over a tight shape. I've seen the ancient molosus sculptures too and I would advice for the Use of mountain Molosus like the Tibetan Mastiff, leonberger, Caucasian Shepherd, Alabai and Saint Bernard to name a few. I guess that using a very broad spectrum of molosus that vome from those ancient breeds can enhance the traits that became diluted with time. And I would strongly advocate for the use of huge breeds, very strong breeds, very heavy breeds and breeds that are still being bred for protection against huge predators. Alabai, Caucasian Shepherd, Aksarai Malaklisi and Boerboel are the best examples I can think of. And finally, try to keep it in ancient breeds and breeds near the general Area between Central Asia and central Europe. That is where the most ancient civilizations appeared alog with the most ancient molosus breeds.
@Belle2550
@Belle2550 4 месяца назад
The breed by ancient description did not have loose skin and was desired to be solid white with strong guardian traits. Floppy is ears, large build, but not loose or cumbersome. The ears were not meant to ever be cropped. They were made by shepherds and it was for guarding livestock. Breeds closer to the job are Anatolian shepherds, Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz, Akbash, Pyrenean Mastiff, and Romanian Carpathian Shepherd. The last of which has some stock still linked with functional genes from the ancient Molossian. Creating a breed for only appearances is a cashgrab and insult to the purpose of what the breed was meant for. With the largest specimens used in war. Cato was the first Roman to write about agriculture, although, as the earliest example of Latin prose, De Agri Cultura (c. 160 BC) Mentioning how the dogs should live with their flocks at night, among them. Scholar Varro agrees, In De Re Rustica (c. 37 BC) "the guardian of the flock, which needs such a champion to defend it." It should have a large head, drooping ears, thick shoulders and neck, wide paws, thick tail, a deep bark, and be all white in color so as to be more easily recognized in the dark. Hidden in his flock with trim body. Care should be taken that it is a good breed, a Spartan for example, and that the dog be purchased from a shepherd rather than a hunter to ensure that it has been trained to follow sheep rather than chase after a hare or stag (II.9.5). A nail-studded leather collar (melium) should be fitted to protect the neck. Once wounded, a wolf also will be less likely to attack another dog, even one not wearing a collar (II.9.15)
@69sound81
@69sound81 4 месяца назад
@@Belle2550 yeah, we are talking about 2 absolutely different things. I'm talking about a dog for war and property guarding while you are talking about the flock guarding molosus. Remember that not all ancient molosus were the same and the canis pugnax is not the same as an ancient molosus. That said, I am aiming for a general type of dog with certain characteristics that provide a certain capability ceiling/potential. The "personality" traits of the dog are a while different thing. Like with any serious program, dogs that don't suit the behaviour can't continue in the breeding program. We have quite different ideas on what a molosus ideal dog would be like. You clearly aim for the sheep guardian ancient standard while I go for the guarding bandog english standard and the war focused canis pugnax standard of the romans. Basically, you like Kangal and I like Cane Corso.

Well, I just hope he really pays attention to the health of this new dog breed. When I see all these wrinkles on the face, around the eyes especially...that is literally calling for eye-problems and skin infections. That dog seems to be too lumbering as it walks...I doubt it could fight of a wolf or whatever. The wolf would make 10 circles around, till that dog would do one. With this massive body there will be no long life....heart-problems & twisted stomach will be often in this breed. Ancient or not....I doubt that, in the past, people cared about long life in dogs...since they would die due to injuries of fights with wild predators etc sooner than later. Maybe in 5-6 years, most likely a lot earlier. And their dogs gave birth 1-2 litters per year without any break...so new dogs where always coming. I understand the idea...though I doubt it is for the benefit of the dogs. Rather a breed that is closer of the body-type of the wolf, would be beneficial....since that is really were dogs come from. Well, imo anyway.

There are 500+ pure breeds already existent and every category ( Mastiffs, retrievers, sheep dogs, cattle dogs, etc etc etc ) is well-covered. That being so, why is there any importance attached to creating a new breed?. A man must have a hobby, I suppose...

The Napolitan mastiff is probably bigger than the dogs you want to recreate. First, in artistic representations from the past - and even today - what was considered strong and fierce was drawn bigger, so you cannot really judge the size of these dogs from their representation in carvings, paintings etc. Second, people were much smaller in these days: probably as small as you are, Marcus! But I don't think they had these dogs to replace what they thought they were missing in "manhood" and intimidating look. In any case, you would be better just buying a Corvette and carrying a big bad gun: now, you would be the man!

labdrive thank you! Just like humans, dogs today are bigger then they've ever been. A regular Neo is probably oversized already for his "vision", but then how else is he supposed to compensate.

Compensate for what? What does he need to compensate?

labdrive self-esteem issues? I'm just commenting on the tendency for people with low self-esteem to compensate with the "bigger is better" mentality.

Aside from all the potential health issues associated with your chosen base breed, what about temperament? I ask because not only were the breed banned from the streets of Ancient Rome following many deaths, but the ancient celts of Britain (who not only repelled Rome's first attempts at invasion, but also fought alongside the very dogs Rome was so impressed by and took back for the arenas) bred their dogs as all purpose working dogs, responsible for guarding, hunting and also companionship. How do you plan to ensure the temperament matches the what we can tell of the original breed? This isn't a troll's rant but a genuine question from a keen dog enthusiast. Peace y'all

We just about have the tech to recreate one through genetic manipulation. Rather than breed characteristics, we could pick and choose. That could ensure any health issues may be eliminated.

If you are really detailed and realistic about what the ancient breed really was, and make them as healthy as possible, I agree with your attempt at recreating the breed. I understand there HAS to be some guesswork, since today breed standards are opinion-affected, so I would imagine ancient ingredients and standards would be a challenge to nail down. However, your work is no less important or unfounded than hundreds of other breeders yesterday and today; they had a vision and purpose and you do too. How is it okay for some breeders and not you? It's always worth looking into the ways people did things at any time in history-- especially the ancients-- when they had clear, less-nonsense mindsets.
