Yet another highly requested Footy athlete is Jeremy Howe!! Cmon to Da Basement to see this mans incredible speccys!!!! #BasementMentality Video Link: • Jeremy Howe’s Best Marks
Howe is an amazing mark. Many players can take a speccy but what separates him from the rest is his consistency, he takes about one making speccy a week. He is also special because he does’t need a big run up to get up there, he seems to only need one or two steps and he’s on your shoulders. Amazing balance and timing. He’s also a well liked by opposition fans because he’s a fair player too. Sadly, we won’t be blessed with him much longer because he’s getting to the end of his career. Given the high mark is the best part of our game, Jeremy is a great proponent.
@TedKaboom. Agreed - he is also a terrific reader of the play, which allows him to get into positions to take "speccies" more than most, he also has very good disposal skills and decision making - so whilst he will always be known for his amazing marking, he's a much more rounded player than that. The only other player to come to mind of the last 30 years or so to be comparable in consistently taking "speccy" marks, is Tony Modra. Cheers!
No journey through the AFL greats is complete without the greatest double header of all time, Gary Ablett Snr and Jnr. The debate rages on as to who is the AFL GOAT, but the fact that this father/son duo are both in the conversation is some INCREDIBLE genes. As a Cats fans who had the privilege of watching them both live, Jnr is probably the more “complete” player, but I have never seen virtuosity and explosive skill like Gary Ablett Snr. One day I watched him kick 14 goals in a game down in Geelong against Richmond, and it is to this day the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in sport. Gary Snr is known as God, and Jnr The Prodigal Son. I shed more than a few tears being there at the game watching Jnr make his debut, part of the absolutely iconic Geelong side that broke a 4 decades-long Premiership drought. The absolute SCENES down Geelong Main St that night in 2007 was a full contact high. I drove down from Melbourne on a whim, my Cats scarf flying out the window. The carloads full of fans heading down the highway like me started a symphony of car horns that lasted the more than hour drive all the way there. Absolutely epic.
As a Geelong supporter, I think you should support a team that hasn't had a lot of success. Perhaps Footscray (2 Premierships), Adelaide (2), St.Kilda (1), Port Adelaide (1) or Fremantle, Gold Coast Suns or Greater Western Sydney who are yet to win one.
Here in Australia at lunchtime at school, you have 15 kids in a group at one end kicking the ball about 40 metres high in air to another group of 15 kids at the other end all trying to take species. This happens every lunchtime for an hour. This is where the skill is mastered
I think you're exactly right about the helmets. I honestly think the best way to reduce head injuries in the NFL is to remove the helmets. As counter intuitive as it sounds, it'll stop guys leading and tackling with their head. The helmet just gives them incentive to lead with it. Then instead of a facemask penalty, any head contact is a foul. Also, as someone who has played footy my whole life, I have no idea how they even play in helmets and pads. It looks so restrictive
You may have noticed in Amatuer/Olympic boxing that they no longer wear head gear? This is for exactly that reason, false confidence in thinking build up of shocks is significantly reduced because of the helmet (which is wrong) and any gains that might exist are nullified by the additional hits the take because of reduced peripheral.
You gotta check out Liam 'Flyin' Ryan. Aerial specialist 😁😁 I gotta reiterate Chris Judd, this man was a 2 time Brownlow medallist. Plugging for West Coast Eagles 😚😙😙
John, never a dull moment following the Magpies. Most loved, most hated and most watched. Always in the news, whether it's football or one of its players J walking. All media and opposition supporters like to stick the boot into us, but all that does is make us laugh and strengthens our resolve. Us against them. Love it.
It is actually a free kick for the defender, if the bloke that goes up doesn't get their hands on the ball - an unrealistic attempt, and obstruction of the defender. There's oft at least one or two of those per game. The defenders are usually aware, and try and position themselves to foil the attempted mark. It all happens so incredibly fast. For the defender to mark, they need to be where the ball will impact - if they are not there, the fellow going up can just take his place and mark it. Some players going up, is part of the marking contest. When the ball is kicked, all the players try and position themselves as best they can. It happens so incredibly fast, & Howe's timing and skill in this department is smokin'!
Ive been watching footy for a long time. I saw Hart. I saw Peter Knights. Van Der Haar. Shaun Smith. Nobody NOBODY gets close to Howe's exploits. He is simply the greatest high mark the game has ever seen.
The guy in front who ends up becoming what we refer to as 'the step ladder', can't really do a lot. Pulling out of a contest is basically a mortal sin. It's more the role of any player on the ground that could shield his run at the contest or screen him so he isn't allowed unimpeeded access to the contest... however, a block off the ball is a free kick, so it taes a certain type of 'skill' and awareness to do it effectively without conceding a free.... and, Howie is also a freak and one of the few players who can elevate himself from only a few steps, so that makes the task even harder. Brilliant draft story too, from Hobart, but really he's a Dodges Ferry Sharks boy. When the Dees spotted him, they actually went down to watch his opponent Jaye Bowden (super player inTassie) ,and Howie just happened to have a day out and tore him to pieces, and the rest as they say... is history
I don't know if you're considering it, but considering your passion, you should seriously consider Port Adelaide as your team. It's the only team in the league that was elevated to the AFL from a different league, (the SANFL). There's a lot of history associated with the club, because it's even older than the VFL. Port Adelaide has also been considered a working class team, if that sort of thing interests you. Also Port Adelaide are the only team in the league that have a pre game ritual of the whole stadium of fans singing a song before every home game.
Garry Ablett , both Snr and Jnr would be a couple of other individual players to check out . Also if you are looking at teams to support have a look at the Video , The decade that delivered ,Geelong Vs Hawthorn . one of the biggest rivalries in the AFL.
G’day Johnny. Carlton’s Alex Jesaulenko was a great high mark as well fabulous ground player. Anthony Koutoufides was another great Carlton player. Richmond’s Royce Hart and Hawthorn’s Peter Knights could take serious grab. Leigh “Lethal” Matthews, from Hawthorn, is well worth a watch. His photo is in the dictionary under brutal and vicious.
You go for Richmond Tigers. Best jumper, best song, most signed up members in Melbourne, most feral fans….what more could you want? Oh and we are looking pretty good for this year with the 2 players we picked up. l’ll check out the Dustin Martin video next - a lot of people don’t talk about how many of the goals in his highlights videos are kicked on his non preferred left foot either
You are correct with the helmets . A lot of NFL players use their helmet as a weapon and end up getting more head knocks than AFL players without the helmets. You may note how little damage he actually does against the players hes jumping on . Its not as dangerous as it seems.
Loving these Aussie Rules vids, wondering if you could check out Charlie Cameron at some point too. Very similar to Eddie Betts, think you'll love it :)
Love the enthusiasm. I might have missed it but which teams have you narrowed it down to? I'm a West Coast Eagles fan through and through hailing from Perth, Western Australia. My advice would be just don't support Collingwood or Fremantle! Also sorry about the Jets (again) this year. I'm a Niners fan so don't be surprised if Jimmy G is in NY next year with Saleh and Mike LaFleur. By the way, maybe check out Chris Judd highlights. Absolute Gun/Legend of the West Coast Eagles and Carlton - 2-time Brownlow Medal winner (i.e. MVP)
You should watch the last 2 minutes of yartapulti vs hawthorn greatest finish I’ve ever seen yartapulti is Port Adelaide Football Club but they have indigenous rounds hence the name change since that’s the name of the original aboriginal territory
Jeremy Howe is one of the best defenders in the league. He's a great intercept marker and has such a great read of the ball and play. Whats good with AFL is because there a so many players and positions when you watch different player highlights you'll see completely different skillsets and sizes. Howe is an amazing mark, Cyril super fast and jukey, Dusty strong powerful and beautiful kick, Eddie Betts jukey and incredible accuracy, Buddy is huge and powerful and accurate. Definitely checkout Buddy's best 23 goals video! Not having helmets definitely changes the way you attack the ball. The problem with having a helmet is it allows you to take take damage to the brain, one head to head hit in the AFL and you're either cut open or KO'd instantly. I saw a video of a coach in America doing a drill where kids lead with their heads at top speed, absolutely disgusting. By the time they reach college theyve already taken so many head trauma, dont have kids in Aus getting hit in the head commonly. The AFL has had to make some big changes in the last 20 years also tho as there were a few incidents that when a player was bent over picking up the ball their head was hit from the top and pushed down on the neck. In 2006 one player had to retired with that sort of situation as he fractured his spine but back then it wasnt even a free kick. Luckily no term effects and he is a successful assistant coach. It was compared to an incident in 1975 when Neil Sachse got hit similarly and became a quadriplegic. There are now far stricter rules now to any contact to the head. There are probably more straight up KO's in the AFL than NFL which isn't great at all but there isn't repeated hits to the head. You should react to "AFL “BLOODIEST” INJURIES" you'll see how easy it is to get cut on the face without a helmet. Great reactions loving the back to back videos! Just one thing is they've been a little quiet in the last few.
Knowing and doing something about it is 2 different things. Pull out and you won’t be playing ( not just first grade but any grade). Coaches ask for and get full commitment at the ball
If you play in front of him he will out mark you anyway, so when he comes up from behind there is not much you can do, you are not allowed to 'tunnel' a player, that is deliberately collapse underneath him to cause him to lose his control, funny game!
I stumbled across your videos recently and now I'm hooked on your AFL reactions and absolutely love your passion and excitement for the game. Here's hoping you seriously consider the Essendon Bombers as your team to follow. I'd suggest checking out some Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti highlights: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fiGU5so3ifw.html. But most importantly you can't go past highlights of whom many consider to be the greatest player of all time - Gary Ablett Jnr, who played for the Geelong Cats and Gold Coast Suns: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CY6AGMpiozs.html. Although, a few people consider or debate that his father was better - Gary Ablett Snr. Keep the videos coming - love your work!
Jeremy Howe was or is the specialist for great speckies and marks. He plays for Collingwood and is towards his end of his career. He's currently 32 years of age. Here is a short video of the bloopers this year ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-OXb9f97MU.html
He isn’t a up and coming player he’s 32 years old that’s the average age or around it where players retire so 2023 may very well be his last as well as Mason Cox he’s 31
Found this rules video that helps describe a lot about free kick and other infringements ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k7vackJttSI.html the video is 8 years old but is still relevant
