People who follow mainstream media talking points that support Kamala's installation and Democrats while she allies with Dick Cheney and supports war in Ukraine are mindless tools who see all the progressive promises of their Democrat candidate betrayed by that candidate. The party that calls themselves the "right side of history" while allied with Neo Cons to "save democracy" by fighting a bipartisan proxy war in Ukraine are the non neutral threat to Democracy cult with a mainstream media propaganda machine at their back. The party who worked to sideline RJK Jr's campaign so much that he ended his campaign to work with Trump to form a populist unity campaign against Democrats are the non neutral threat to Democracy. Trump populism is the resistance to this allied uniparty machine that is constantly dehumanizing it's fellow American Trump voters and pushing censorship of "misinformation" as the way to protect Democracy even if it is curtailing freedom of speech and supporting the supremacy of mainstream media minsinfromation propaganda by contrast itself. The amount of dehumanizing or Trump and Trump voters never ends and yet they take it with so much non violent grace that Democrats and the media know they can go as hard with the rhetoric as they want. There is no such thing as unity to be had with a Democrat party that dehumanizes half the population as Nazis and as evil. Those who react in step with the mainstream media's narrative portrayals of Trump and his base are deranged emotional reactionary tools of Democrat propaganda. You can't reason and converse with those that jump on board with narratives from the news media and shows like the View and Jimmy Kimmel. There is no getting out of division because Trump supporters will not sell their souls and get on board with the machine of evil that is the modern uniparty of war and censorship. Trump voters are humans and Americans too.

Sorry guys, this song has nothing to do with race or bias towards any political regime, it is to do with following like sheep and conforming to bigoted and singular mentality of the US state. You don't need friends in a certain culture or race to comment on American life. It's a very rose tinted view of life in America if you can't get what this song is about. This song came out when Bush Jr was in office, while the lead singer does not support Trump. Its also important to remember when the song came out. And these guys didn't grow up in Beverly Hills or something. They grew up lower-middle class. Regardless, go back to the early 00's and see what was happening to understand this one. I find it ironic that the people who most commonly use the term "Trump Derangement Syndrome" melt down themselves over innocuous stuff like tan suits, lite beer, and green M&Ms. That they buy into the "hysteria" simply because certain media outlets tell them to is the main theme of this song. And to Don's point about typecasting, being from California myself, I get that. I'm sick and tired of the rest of the country hating on everyone from Califoria because they believe we're all "liberal Hollywood elitists" simply because those aforementioned media outlets constantly repeat that talking point.

American military brat here. I grew up in Europe and have a very different upbringing from non-military kids. When this song came out in 2004 I was traveling abroad a lot, due to what was going in the world and my job at the time I tried to blend in where I could (not possible in Asia). Most Europeans would be shocked to find out I was from the US, they figured I was Canadian. Then they pointed out a loud mouth bleached blonde woman and said that was what they viewed us all as, I proved them wrong that we are not all like that. AKA "Ugly Americans" - loud and obnoxious. I love my country but we have a lot of issues and there doesn't seem to be anybody wanting to grow past those issues.
@DaveB-hg7el
@DaveB-hg7el 6 дней назад
I was fortunate enough to be able to live in France when I was 18. Even back then the stereotype of the ugly American was held by the residents of the small town where I lived. Not because of me, but this town has an old cathedral which has played a significant role in the history of the Catholic church, and drew many visitors. I'm sad to say that I have seen many citizens of the US confirm the picture of the ugly American. But I do feel the need to disagree with the last part of your comment. I think that there are many people in the US who are aware of the issues we face, and are trying to do what they can to make changes. The problem, as I see it, is that not enough people can agree on what the issues are, and consequently don't see the need to work for changes. I think that the upcoming election is a possible turning point in the effort to make positive changes, but the outcome is still uncertain and even if the right wing loses they have shown their ability to be a roadblock in any effort to alter the status quo. My apologies for this long text, but your comment is interesting and there's a lot to unpack in it. I think those of us who are able to live in a different culture for an extended stay, get the chance to enlarge their perspective of the world and the people who share it with us. The ugly American refuses to learn, but those who do will help us all in the long run. Peace 💚

TBH, if political songs hurt feelings around here…BP should just do country music. Rock, punk, folk, hip hop, and many of the sub genre’s of rock ALL GET POLITICAL at some point. Tons of artists have written/performed music that is political in nature. And a lot (like Green Day) don’t want their stuff hijacked by either political party…even if the song/band lean one way or the other. So again, stick to country music if this stuff triggers you, because way too many other genre’s address social/political issues. Actually, most 80’s hair metal bands are safe for you…except Van Halen…they did do one song that might trigger you.

I would like to address one thing I disagreed with. Music + lyrics (and by extension a music video) is Art, not Media. Even though it may be heard on the radio or seen on television, a song is no different than a painting, a poem, a film, or a sculpture. It is the artist's responsibility to put forth their point of view, which of course many people may disagree with, and not waiver from that point of view no matter the consequences. Of course some music (i.e. Art) is more superficial and is created to enhance experiences, bring joy, excite, soothe, etc. Other music is created to question, provoke, resist, incite, etc. E.g. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, and yes, Greenday.

This song needs to be understood within the context of when it was released. The American public was lied to over WMD's. Without outright saying it, they allowed the American public to associate Iraq with 9/11. On the basis of this collective gaslighting, we illegally invaded another country, killed over 200,000 Iraqi civilians, lost over 7,000 brave American service people, lost over 8,000 civilian contractors, started a refugee crisis, and spent an estimated $8B. If you were politically conscious at the time, you knew immediately that this was gaslighting for the sake of war. Many of us protested and were attacked by the (predominately) right wing of the country who fell for the propaganda. With that being said, it is also fair to now criticize their TDS and hypocrisy. It is why I left the Democratic party. I would much rather side with someone I have disagreements with than the performative hypocrisy of propagandists. Sadly, they've lost the plot.

I’ll try to make this one brief. Back then, we knew and understood musicians that dabbled in political lyrics (angry or comedic) They were free to have their opinions and if the song was good, we were gonna keep listening to it. We knew Green Day and SOAD were singing about GWB but they were also speaking facts about politics and media in general (Lies from the tablecloth). I’ve been a Moderate Conservative Republican since the Clinton’s stripped military pay down to the poverty line and refused to give us a pay raise, closed bases and scrapped equipment, raised our taxes and cut our defense budget. I was a huge Bush supporter because he did the exact opposite for military families (including a stimulus check and higher EIC). I was not personally offended by anyone who didn’t like President Bush. I even laughed along with all the comedian’s impersonations (so did he). It wasn’t about worshipping the man, we all knew he was an imperfect politician; it was about whether he was doing Right by the People who elected him (and he was, same with Reagan). Those of us with long memories knew what it meant when Saddam was found in his spider hole and was told ‘President Bush sends his Regards’ (for GHWB & GWB). Back to my earlier point, most of us weren’t hyper focused on being offended on others behalf. Opinions were free to have so if we liked a song we bopped, banged, danced and sang along; if we didn’t like it we’d skip it or change the channel.

Gotta remember this is a rock opera, first major one since Tommy. It establishes the mood of a character in the opera. It has its points, but like the character it represents, it has fundamental flaws. All of the characters in it do, from St. Jimmy to what's his face, to what's her name. In 2018 scientific American had an entire issue on the science of inequality. When Reagan took office our inequality was low. Now it’s highest in the world. Republican policies CAUSE inequality and brain atrophy. The part of the brain controlling judgement is underdeveloped, which is what the fascists say is the problem with poor people. Their policies are literally causing it. We have the worst healthcare outcomes. Since we have such a strong economy we should have the fewest people in prison, but we have the most. We have the largest transfer of wealth in our history, from the poor and middle class to the rich. 50 trillion dollars. Red states are the worst, purple states are the middle and blue states have the lowest inequality.

Thats a predjudice in and of itself. You can be anti Trump/Anti Kamala-Biden and still hold the beliefs of said party. The figure head doesnt speak for said party in totality. Lines are getting blurred, stances are being set as part of the game. You dont have to agree with 100% of anything to cast a vote. Songs a banger and holds truth no matter what your views are and who you know.

Like so many have said, this song, in fact this entire album has to be taken into context of when it was written, an answer to post 9/11 Bush era stuff. The album is a concept album in it’s entirety and there isn’t a bad song on it. Trump derangement syndrome isn’t it. That wasn’t even a thought on the horizon when this was written. If you really want something to dive into from this same album, Jesus of Suburbia. It’s long, but there is much to unpack about the apathy that so many were feeling at that time. If you can’t find something to relate to in that song, GreenDay definitely isn’t for you. Little side note, there is a Broadway play based on this album and it is amazing.

This song was written shortly after 9/11, released in 2004, and the focuses on the media mania that happened after the Twin Towers collapsed, and the unfair restrictions placed on a wide swath of American citizens and residents from a number of Middle Eastern countries following those events. The propaganda he's referencing isn't Democratic or Republican, per se, it's about how all Muslims were tarred with the same brush after that event, and media mania was used to justify iron-clad restrictions of travel to and from America. Two years later, in 2003, the same propaganda was used to justify Bush's false claims of WMDs in Iraq and the subsequent illegal invasion of that country.

Don, you’re right on about respecting other people’s beliefs. I believe the media is out of hand on both sides and hype the fighting. And that people just go along with it using it as proof for their point of view. My family is divided and I see the fighting first hand. Why can’t we come back towards the middle again? Do we need to buy into the hate and separation? It’s okay that people have different opinions and we should respect them. I’ve never been a fan of any politician. I especially don’t like how each side is just spewing hate instead of just telling us what they’ll do for us. Love your neighbor ❤!

The Offspring's drummer Pete Parada was not allowed to tour with the band because he wouldn't get a COVID vax, however tensions grew within the band and he was replaced entirely. If everyone in the band but him believes this is the way to go, then that what they do and have the right to do. Parada is not even the original drummer, most of their hits were written and recorded by a completely different person. If you think it's not fair that someone can get fired for having a different opinion, then capitalism isn't for you.
