This brings back memories of the American 8th Army Air Corps in England during world war two. I was a young impressionable boy back then,, and I saw the Fortress's fly out on the raids over Germany. Many never came back. We saw the young American airmen on our steets and we heard their music - Glen Miller. Many went to their deaths, having the night before danced to that particular piece: American Patrol. Rest in Peace - we who saw them will never forget them.
My dad served in WWII with the 8th Army Air Corps in England. He was stationed in Kings Cliffe, close to Peterborough in England. So I grew up listening and enjoying the big band sound, especially Glenn Miller. He told me that while he was stationed there, the Glenn Miller Band performed at the airbase in Kings Cliffe and he got to hear them. I always thought it would have been so much fun to hear his music live. I just recently did some research and read that Glenn Miller's last live performance was in Kings Cliffe. Now I am wondering if this was the performance that my dad got to see and hear. My dad has passed away and I wish I had asked him if this was indeed Glenn Miller's last performance. Before he passed away, I did manage to take my dad to 2 performances of the traveling Glenn Miller Band. I do recommend to anyone that loves this music to attend if the band comes to your town.
Mine too. Even when he was very old with advanced dementia, my mother and I would play his Glenn Miller or his Tommy Dorsey for him, and he would immediately smile and hum along.
GOSH THIS TAKES ME BACK IN TIME TO THE WAR YEARS THE BEST ORCHESTRA I HAVE EVER HEARD. THINGS WERE SO EMOTIONAL THEN WITH SO MUCH GOING ON AND SO MUCH DRAMA ALL AROUND US.
I seem to be witnessing the real great orchestra of Glenn Miller. Greetings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fJD5joPPmik.html *TUXEDO JUNCTION* Song of *Glenn Miller* Guitar Solo Version cover by *Duane Eddy*
Always a crowd favorite. I play in a similar band that plays this same arrangement. We sometimes see youth groups wearing period dress and swing dance to this immortal piece. It is encouraging to know that there are groups of teens, in scattered pockets of the US, who are fortunate to have grownups exposing them to this timeless jazz and the dance steps that go with it. The amount of pure fun they have dancing to American Patrol, and many other immortal tunes like it, is immense. This is a superb band, and I like their side by side layout. Maybe we should set up the same way...
My dad,93 taught me to dance to Big bands....danced to the Glenn Miller band in 1967, in England. This new band, is just as great. Polished, to a high shine!!
One of Miler's many A+ songs. I'm a wild of rock'n'roll. I remember the rock'n'roll "Big Bang" in 1955 (Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Bo Diddley).. But I'm still drawn to the big band music of the '40s.. It's my parents' music, but it always spoke to me.
Was able to see The Glenn Miller Orchestra live a few years ago. They were announced, the orchestra went into Moonlight Serenade and I had goose bumps throughout the concert!!! What an awesome experience!!!!! So good to be able to see music like this on youtube....
American Patrol, Little Brown Jug, and Tuxedo Junction always made it fun for the trombones (which is rare for most group musical arrangements). I love playing Miller and Sousa tunes on my trombone.
Sensational!!!!! My Mom took me to a concert at Woodfield Mall in Illinois when I was in 8th grade... Miller's records were in a box in my grandma's attic... I played 2nd alto for the TCU Jazz ensemble from 79 to 84... this is really really outstanding.....
Look im 63 and maybe an old soul inside but .... I love not just great traditional jazz greats and there are a lot of timeless great recordings but I also love the swing era jazz music again ? There were some really hit swinging tunes out there and this is very much one of those great tunes from the swing era.
Yes I am. When I was about 7 or 8 years old m y oldest brother had band practice in our living room. This was before all of them went into the service (WWII). the drummer let me beat on his base between numbers. My best memory is that they all came back and married and went to college on the GI bill. MOST are gone now, rest in peace Bill.
When I was in high school band in 1963, I came home and told my father we played a really neat song today that our band director had written for us (this one). Dad smiled. "He may have 'arranged' it for your band, but that song is probably older than I am." Whenever I hear this song, I think of Bill Holston (our band director) and my dad. I still play trumpet and still play the song.
Margot Shelby I think so too. I was born in 1969 but I still am in love with the ww2 swing era big band era. I talk about this with people in their 90s which lights up a smile on their face.
Lordy, lordy, that's a dead-on identical version of the classic WWII song. It sends shivers up my old spine! If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that Mr. Miller himself was there in his white coat leading the band with his trombone, too!
Yes they the acoustic sound if u close your eyes I would swear it is the best this was the execution of Glenn listened to other big bands on u tube but this is excellent sound like original what orchestra
Wish they'd put on the show that glenn did. Good music but no soul, no humor, no show. Glen used put his slide in the drummers face. The would jump around and put on a show. That's half of what made Glenn's stand out from the rest.
Caledonia you may have seen my Uncle. He flew with the Eigth many missionsHe was one of the lucky ones and lived through that ordeal to return home safely.
I must have seen them right about this time ... there were two versions touring the country, and I saw them in Milwaukee. The legacy has been richly handed down. It will always be the music that won the war.
I like to listen to this type of music. Also classic stuff also. I saw the Glen Miller story on on of the movie channels but never got to see the end of it. I heard he never came home. R.IP. Mr. Miller may your music continue to inspire all who hear it. Thank you.
Glenn promised to play his wife favorite song little brown jug on the radio broadcast if he made it there alright. Just before they played the song the radio announcer said the Glenn's plane was missing.
Wonderful! I could not stop my foot from bouncing. And the memories from WWII... Oh how I respect those men who fought in that war. This song helped me imagine being one of them.
It’s 1945. Your in a bar after you came home from winning the war. People congratulate you and praise you as you walk in. Having good times with your pals like old times
People: "This is nostalgic, back in my day listening to this orchestral music while in service in WW2". Me: "Circus Charlie Stage 1" *And that annoying pale eyed lion while being burned into a hoolahoop.
