Grant's memoirs are a masterpiece of writing. Very few people at the peak of health could have produced something as good and he did it while dying. Truly amazing.

I agree. I can't imagine his anxiety and desperation as he wrote and dictated, just hoping he'd have the time to finish it all. He must have felt a wave of relief, even through his pain, when he knew he'd completed what he'd set out to do. Remarkable determination on his part....but he'd shown the same determination in the war.

All of you blaming cigarettes and stress from the war fail to realize something. Many people assume that FDR was just paralyzed from the waist down and in a wheelchair and that was it. The truth is, he was in pain most of the time. Sometimes SEVERE pain from his illness. The human body is not designed to be in constant pain that way. THIS was a major contributing factor to his high blood pressure and advanced aging. Of course, there was no blood pressure medicine back then so that taxed his heart and eventually led to congestive heart failure even though it technically was a stroke that killed him.

That was a common belief at the time. Doctors were wrong or overwhemed so mistakes happened. Thats why if you look at some old graves, there are bells on them. The string went through the casket and ended up near the dead bodys hand. IIRC theres a small percentage of old graves that have been dug up and theres scratch marks on the bottom of the lids.

Some errors but pretty good overall. Harding did have a daughter and it was confirmed in the 1960s by the mother and Harding's letters to her and other evidence. As for the car that Kennedy was shot in Johnson had it sent right away back to Ford in Michigan to be completely refurbished. It was not held and examined carefully for bullet damage and other forensic evidence. This strange action contrary to good Police work has prevented the proof or disproof of the "multiple bullets from different directions theories". Many reliable people who got a good look at the car have stated they saw bullet entry holes in the front of the vehicle. But Johnson's actions prevented a complete and thorough examination.

@@dawnnichols2786 That's really the most plausible explanation. JFK and RFK wanted to dump him from the 1964 ticket.
