When Al said "it doesn't matter who comes first when you're on your own" it was a double edged joke. Not just a reference to getting to the moon but also a masturbation joke. He shakes his hand and states "it's been a year" to imply he has had no sex for a year and has had to jerk off, as you Americans call it, whereas we refer to it as wanking.

The ability to laugh at yourself shows tremendous character and self confidence, every British person has it. Don't take things personally, America is shit as well as the UK. We were being bombed constantly during the 2nd World War but we just carried on as normal, British people are hard as nails and our humour reflects that. You take the piss out of me and I'll come back with something more offensive until it comes to the point where we just laugh at each other. It's the British way!

'No representation', you do realise we have a democracy right? XD Back in the 18th century though, I wouldn't have had representation either even as a native of the UK. Not even in the 19th century. Don't take it to heart Connor. AS JOSH has mentioned; British humour is steeped in Self-deprecation and sarcasm. It is nuanced. Al is a charming, highly educated Oxford history graduate. This is an act. You need to visit a few British pubs to get the character lol. Watch his programme entitled 'Why does everyone hate the British?' He rips it out of us too lol. Keep watching his sketch: you will see those nuances and how sophisticated his humour is. As for double-entendres and backhanded compliments - that I'm afraid is just being British lol.

Who was it said, "If the British like you, they take the mickey out of you. If they aren't sure they like you, or even DON'T like you, they are polite at all times." "Not Funny?" Hmmm - ok, if you want more serious stuff, try "Al Murray's Road to Berlin" series - from D-Day onwards. This is his serious historical stuff (with a bit of humour), you'll find it far more complimentary to the USA - although you might find a British perspective interesting, you won't find it offensive. Edit: Darn, can't find it on RU-vid.

The reason America is so spacious with development is because of Manifest destiny, america took as much land as possible in the mid 1800s and spaced all their towns out so that they would hold that territory and lay claim. Listen to "To Anacreon in Heaven" and see if it rings any bells. It's an 18th century British drinking song... Russia had the first satellite, the first animal, the first astronaut and realised the moon wasn't possible. America had to keep going thanks to their President stating "we will go to the moon in this decade and return safely". Strange no one has even attempted it other than 6 manned missions between 1969 and 1972. Even now they recon it's going to be 2024 before a manned mission could be attempted. That says a lot to me... Try watching "the time Britain nuked The USA twice"... Back in 1960-1961...

The hall mark of British comedy is self deprication, of which Al is a master of, half the jokes are about the British as much as whoever he's talking about, it's not something Americans tend to encounter too much of in their own comedy, but seems to be growing in popularity across the Anglosphere. I'm glad you kinda like it, but I'd honestly suggest watching a full show, most of the famous clips are from 'giving it both barrels' but there's far more in it then just those clips.

In the 2000's, around the time this show was recorded, Al had a 'chatshow' on a mainstream channel, in character as the Pub Lardlord. One guest was Buzz Aldrin and Al was star struck and could barely stay in character. He did congratulate Buzz on punching that conspiracy nut who had been following him, yelling insults and calling him a liar, a couple of years before. Though more a geopolitical and military history buff, Al will know the Soviets were in the Moon race, he might know that the Kremlin only approved the Soviet response 3 years after JFK's announcement and with a fraction of the budget, they were never going to win.

Don't apologise for pausing and reflecting. Not enough reaction videos actually react, they just watch.

Remember this darlin. When a Brit teases, mocks and lays into you; it normally is our way of saying we like you. You've been accepted as one of us. The Americans have lots of unsubstantiated, untrue stereotypes of us, we don't take it too seriously as we know it's not correct. Calling us a bunch of ..... is not helpful. People are strange when you're a stranger. The Yanks in the audience probably live or have lived here so get the humour and were not offended. We still love you. X

So glad you're not really upset. I was a little concerned that you may have been. Keep viewing and vlogging. I really enjoy them. It's good you're taking the time to look into our culture and try to understand it. We are a nice bunch really.

@@McJibbin No, you just don't get the humour. Don't try to analyse humour.

If you met an absolute stranger, how you know he was an America? Easy...it's the first thing he'll tell you. Don't ever ask one if he's married, for he's honour-bound to take out his wallet and extract a photo of his wife and kids - as if anyone is bloody interested! If you'd never met him how would you know he was American? He's got a Stars and Stripes badge in his lapel. Don't ever ask him where lives, for the photos will come out again, just to show his Stars and Stripes sticking out of his bedroom window. If you're standing in a crowd outside the Tower of London, and you spot him, just prtend you're a foreigner; guaranteed he'll tell you the Queen lives there.Ask him what car he drives, and it's out with the photos to show a very large 4x4 with bull horns - and the bloody Stars and Stripes on the window and bumper. Ask him if knows what Big Ben is, and with all the puffed-up arrogance of having an honours degree at Wottacrock State Junior Infants School, he'll tel you its "that big tower with the clock on it." Don't ever ask him what he thinks of Britain, for the ansers could be one or all of the following, "You sure do talk funny, but I love the British accent." (there are only about 100 different accents in Britain)! "You Brits don't have good coffee/your streets are sooo narrow;you drive on the wrong side of the road/ does your Royal Army all wear those funny hats?/we have the biggest army in the world in the USofA." But what can't you say to an American? Well, for starters, don't ever say anything about their flag, they don't like anyone saying anything they don't like; theyll happily tear Britain to shreds with their opinions, but don't understand when the Brits take the piss out of them. Don't ever mention the fact that they "escaped" from Vietnam, got their asses kicked at the Bay of Pigs...and don't risk life and limb by reminding them of their recent debacle in Afghanistan. "Special Relationship with the UK?" An old chestnut that was smoke and mirrors - there was never any special relationship. I found myself highly amused with McJibbin - he was more than taken-aback with Al Murray's incisive wit - most of which went over his head, as it does with most Americans. The British sense of hmour has served our country well for hundreds of years; it's part of what mage Great Britain great!
