Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through RU-vid videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Grocer's is actually a shortening of grocer's shop, not groceries, but what Stephen is referring to is the grocer's apostrophe, which is when an apostrophe is used wrongly in a plural, such as in apple's or 80's.

Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics dealing with basic operations like addition, subtractions etc. Hence, they said arithmetic when dealing with the discussion around proving that 1+1 = 2.

4:20 Rob Brydon is known for many things, but one of them is that he's really, really short. So "I have a friend" who "wears vertical stripes to appear taller" whilst he has a shirt with vertical stripes is such a layered joke.

Both Stephen and David went to Cambridge rather than Oxford, but not at the same time, as Stephen is 17 years older. Stephen's arrival was delayed by him been sent to prison. He had an early life designed for opening chapters of an autobiography.

They were also both members of footlights whilst at Cambridge. David Mitchel was president, Hugh Laurie was president when Fry was a member. The list of Footlights members can read light a whose who of British light entertainment. More than half of the presidents from the last 60 years have their own Wikipedia page

@@221b-Maker-Street Jobs for the Girls as well. Sue Perkins (Mel & Sue) and Jan Ravens (Dead Ringers) are former Presidents. Other female members include Sandi Toksvig (also QI), Emma Thompson, Mel Giedroyc (also Mel & Sue) and loads more. Though its fair to say the successful alumni does skew male. But the big difference between Footlights, Cambridge and Eton, is that Eton is a very expensive private school. Cambridge University is a state education institute and footlights just a University Society. If you want a successful career in the entertainment industry its one path in. But its not the only one; and most are not successful.

My friend was a sign writer. A new tattoo shop had opened in town and wanted some signs making. The shop was to be called Diamond Tattoo. And the owner had made all the designs that showed the name of the shop with some playing cards showing a full royal flush poker hand with the Diamond picture cards. But the own of the shop had wrote 'DIMOND' instead of 'DIAMOND'. My friend asked him 5 times if he was sure that's how it was to be on his shop signs. Each time he said yes. A few days later he opened his shop with the 'DIMOND' name and he was immediately laughed at on Facebook. The signs cost him almost £1000 and all the comments on the Facebook page said things like "who is going to get a tattoo off some one who can not spell?" Thousands of people commenting on the spelling mistake. Within 2 days the Facebook page was removed and a few days later the shop had all the signs removed and was boarded up and closed. lol.

@@c_n_b I suspect the latter, hoping for a follow-up job maybe. I honestly can't imagine - having been told that he'd spelled diamond incorrectly - that the tattooist would say, _'Oh go ahead anyway mate - who cares?'_ Also, 'lol' at someone going out of business because of a misspelt sign?

With comedians, if in doubt, they went to Cambridge. Many of Britain's top comedians started in the Cambridge Footlights, the university's drama society. Digestive biscuits were originally marketed as being good for the digestion, but they're just a slightly sweet biscuit (=cookie) - they come in plain flavour, or with a milk chocolate or dark chocolate coating. They're one of the most common and popular types of biscuit in the UK.

Never thought about the name, but I'm guessing it's because digestives have more of the bran left in the flour than usual biscuits made with very refined white flour, giving them more fibre?

The radio show btw is "The unbelievable truth". David Mitchell hosted it for many, many years now. And it's quite funny. They even had a little (fun) fight with QI once, calling each other out for mistakes. They settled that with a special Christmas Episode of the unbelievable truth with the QI cast (Fry,Davies, John Loyd, the producer, and Rob Brydon). It was cool to have Stephen in a (kinda) quiz situation without that little helpful QI monitor in front of him.

Arithmetic is a subset of mathematics (just the basic operations). When I was at school we learnt arithmetic until the age of 11 and mathematics from then on. It was divided into mental arithmetic, mechanical arithmetic and "problems" (applied mechanical arithmetic). I seem to remember that, in Scotland, you used to be able to sit not only "O" grade mathematics at the age of 16 but also, as a separate subject, "O" grade arithmetic whereas the English examining boards only offered "O" level maths.

cutting his best of to less then 2 hours is a crime! Also i'm sure he and Stephen in a interview situation could have a normal conversation. There is a Rob Brydon podcast where he talks with David Mitchell for an hour or so.They don't try to be funny, they just have a chat. There are quite a few of these Rob Brydon podcasts with comedians and others and it's a nice look behind the funny people on the funny shows. The ones on RU-vid are edited down to 15-20 minutes, but have video.

16:08 - Arithmetic ≠ Mathematics. Arithmetic is confined to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and is a mere branch of the entire _field_ of Mathematics. Mathematics covers logic, measurements, quantities, proportions, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, mathematical theory, algebra... and arithmetic!

Kia ora koe - Maths includes a whole lot of fields - logic and algebra and game theory and topology and...and... google it. Arithmetic is the bit that manipulates numbers - real numbers and operations like addition, multiplication etc

when i was at school arithmatic was a total different class from mathematics which included geometry , trigonomatry, calculas and algebra...... wish i had studied more in English...sure a lot of spelling errors in this statement

David went to SCHOOL at ABINGTON SCHOOL. But he went to UNIVERSITY at OXFORD. A green GROCER sells fruit and vegetables. Who the hell told you that 50% of people have 3 lungs !!??🤦‍♂ MATHS ....PLURAL !! Because there is more than 1 discipline. Arithmetic involves addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Mathematics involves signs, symbols etc as in Algebra, calculus geometry and trigonometry. DIGESTIVE biscuits are my favourite for dunking in tea. But the HAVE to be McVities. The term digestive derived from the belief that the had antacid properties around the time the biscuit was introduced due to the use of sodium bicarbonate as an ingredient. So basically Conor , as we say in the UK.....you were on the THICK TABLE !! (Peter Kay)

I get your frustration, but for better or worse this is his video. We are here to see him react and he is indeed reacting and adding his own thoughts, etc. (as opposed to countless other RU-vid videos where people just upload themselves watching the original and laughing a lot big without adding anything, like some watch party). The conceit here is that we’ve all already watched the original video and are not interested in watching it again, just watching him.
